Barnes to UK?

Not a chance. Rick is here to stay.

I couldn't have said that with confidence two years ago, but I will today. Austin is his home now.

And if you read that thread, you get some insight as to why Barnes would be a bad fit there.

He would win like they want, but they are too dense to recognize it. No reason to go where you are not wanted, when the fans would automatically believe you were underachieving. They ran off Tubby Smith, and what did that get them?

Boy those Kentucky fans sure are full of themselves. I hope they get stuck with a loser after all their dream candidates say no thanks.

Why would you even post this? To show folks you have the, "inside scoop?" Just nonsense and wastes everyone's time. Nothing at all credible.

I read something supposedly posted by Seth Davis, same thing. After mentioning Barnes, he said, "We're all guessing."

See, Barnes is a good candidate. But the UK fans don't know a good candidate when they see it. And what has happened with Gillispie, it seems to me, would confirm to Barnes that UK is not the place for him.

When UK hired Eddie Sutton, they were hiring someone with a record a lot like Rick Barnes's. But when Pitino left the NBA to replace Sutton, Pitino (or at least, Pitino's background) became the UK standard. They accepted Tubby for a while because he won, but they seem to feel they should get anyone they want, or rather, that many fans seem unfulfilled if they don't. That's what Barnes would walk into. It wouldn't matter what he did -- there would be a lot of UK fans who would believe that someone else not only could have, but would have done better.

IMO, RB is a lot better off nursing the recruiting hauls he has attracted to UT toward the FF.

Actually, they hired Pitino from Providence, fresh off his Final Four run there. This was after Lute Olsen and PJ Carlesimo turned AD C.M. Newton down.

They're the Alabama of basketball. The only way they're going to be happy with a hire is if they find their Nick Saban.

I was speaking with one prominent alumn who wanted Memphis' coach. When I mentioned that UK would probably be on probation in a few years if that happened, he told me that at least UK would have some years of success.

Pitino left Providence for the Knicks, then to Kentucky.

When he left Providence, he left an assistant behind, who ran the program into the ground. The guy hired to clean up the mess was Rick Barnes.

Hmm.... So Pitino flopped so bad his first time in the NBA I've forgotten about it. That, and his Boston flop was so spectacular.

Actually, he left the Knicks after winning a division title. That was one of the things that made the move to Kentucky so surprising. You know, coaching the Knicks was a "dream job" and all that.

I didn't realize that.

Well, I sure hope Izzo doesn't go there. I really like Izzo a lot. From the outside it sure doesn't seem like a fit for me. Maybe he's trying to get a raise out of the MSU athletics department. If so, flirting with Kentucky and Arizona will probably get it done, if the funds are there to begin with. There's no way MSU can get a comparable replacement, IMO.

I know that if Barnes left, he'd be the first guy I'd call. But can you imagine, as I posted on the Izzo thread, seven years at UK without a high seed? He's won a ton of tournament games, but even then, there are three first-round outs.

Tubby's were all high seeds, except one (a five), until his last two years (and those were eights). Izzo's had a 10, and had a nine two years ago.

You are right about the Alabama comparison. It's not just that they think they should have the best coach, but that they deserve it.

he turned them down 2 years ago.. why would he go now?

the environment at UK is even more toxic now that it was 2 years ago.

KU is a prestigious blue blood among college BB programs, but IMO Barnes is not leaving UT for any program

I really don't see Barnes leaving at this point. He is on pace to get the arena named after him and he's now turned down multiple jobs that do not suffer lack of basketball popularity.

If for some reason he did leave though the guy that would be #1 on my list is Calipari. I know he isn't exactly the same personality type as Mack Brown, and as a result Dodds probably wouldn't go after him, but man it's just scary thinking how well that guy could recruit at a place like Texas.

Calipari will never be the coach at Texas. Never. He's the worst sleazebag in college basketball today. That has quite a bit to do with his ability to recruit.

Wow...The posts on that original link are amazing. How uninformed can you get about Rick Barnes? And what does BCG being from Texas have to do with Barnes and other coaches in this state?

It's now being reported that Caliperi is interested in the UK job. If he takes it, this will be the first prediction of mine that's held up during March Madness.

Talking about Pitino's time in the NBA and the KU job, here's the quote from his epic blowup shortly before leaving the Celtics; it's about Boston fans and their unrealistic expectations, but it could easily apply to Kentucky:
