Barnes chews out Rosner over Heisman vote

After the Texas State game Saturday, but before the official post-game presser starts, Barnes let Rosner have it. He basically told him that, in a year like this with no clear-cut favorite, you HAVE to vote for the local guy. And make sure Riggs knows that too.

Nice to see him make the effort to stick up for the program.

Well, an equally bad voting strategy would be to vote for someone to avoid the "homer" label. You could make the case for all the candidates (except for maybe Ingram--anyone who gets benched in a rivalry game for being ineffective should not win the Heisman) and none of the candidates.

Good for Rick. I'd love video of that. Freaking outstanding.

Rick Barnes continues to impress me with his UT spirit. Of the big-3 male coaches, he seems like he's the most in-tuned with our historic rivalries and traditions.

Well, since we never have local sportswriters at AAS vote for the local guy, then I guess it's not really a problem worriying about "Homers" on our crack journalistic staff. Oh, wait, Suzanne voted for Colt; what a terrible mistake.

If I thought for one second that those guys were voting for someone else because they really felt someone else deserved it more, I'd say let them vote for whomever the hell they want and leave them alone about it. But this is about attention. That's all. And it's about time people within our athletics department (even if it's a player or a coach from another program) became more vocal about it. They should just stop granting interviews and access to those blowhards until they stop using Heisman votes to sell newspapers.

Every single voter in the state of Nebraska voted for Suh. The majority of voters on the West Coast voted for Gerhart. The majority of voters in the Southeast voted for Ingram.

The only region that continues not to vote for its own is the state of Texas, or more specifically, the city of Austin, or even more specifically, the staff at that terrible rag of a newspaper to which I no longer know even one single person who subscribes.

There was NO clear-cut leader this year, so a vote for Colt would have been completely valid and defensible. But these jackholes refuse to do it, and I will continue to refuse to subscribe to their paper.

Rick Barnes is right, God bless him!

Homers vs. conciliators

At least the homer votes his conscience, he votes for the person who he genuinely believes to be the best. The other.... well he votes to ingratiate himself in the eyes of his peers.

3 statesman writers voted for a 4th place
candidate that happened to have his best game against Texas. If you can't see the peculiarity in this you aren't looking hard enough.

Wow odd how that worked out...

I don' t think Barnes would have said that to Rosner if it wasn't a blatant slap in the face, given that Colt clearly should have won it. The Heisman mystique has changed...it's a garbage accolade now and the kiss of death to future success. Ingram isn't even the best back on his team, much less a Heisman caliber player. Colt should have won it based on the accomplishments of his entire career, culminated in a great senior season. It's the 'what have you done for me lately trophy'...

Oh well. I'm secretly glad he didn't win it..for a lot of reasons.

I love Rick Barnes for more than this. He may be my favorite coach in my lifetime.

I was too young for Coach Royal... but have talked to him at basketball games and he is way up there too.

The Barnes comments on this thread are funny considering how his UT tenure started. Anyone remember the "Kaiser" nickname?

I completely agree with Barnes. These guys get inside access to the UT program so they can sell their paper. Then they go out and pick some other kid when Colt just as deserving. Ridiculous.

Oh, and this. Perhaps 1-2% of the Heisman voters have the chance to vote for a truely legitimate hometown candidate. It won't likely make a difference, but it is a nice gesture. Even if 100% of the Texas voters vote for a Texan, it would only cancel out the other regional "homers." The true winner is determined by the voters outside the home territory of the leading candidates. One thing that would really piss me off is if voters started pulling a stunt like Leach, Mangino and company by downgrading one candidate in order to help their guy win it.

Some folks on this board, and others, disliked Barnes early in his tenure because he didn't do the hook 'em horns sign after games when he first got here in '98.

I love the guy, don't get me wrong. But he was questioned for that at the time. In retrospect, it was obviously an oversight... but people did complain about it at the time.

Since there was no clear favorite, and Colt arguably deserved it last year, why not go ahead and vote for the hometown guy?

People get the Heisman as a "lifetime achievement award" all the time, so Colt's career should have broken the tie if not the hometown angle.

It's B.S, the way they voted. It's just not right what they did. At the gut level.

Bohls, Rosner and Riggs can vote for whoever they want. That's their duty as Heisman voters. I can think they are moronic and stupid when they screw up really bad.

Love ya Suzanne. Talk some sense into the guys whose only purpose is to be contrary.

I used to go to the AAS all the time one way or another from Houston to find out about my Horns. Now I would not mind one bit if they went bankrupt.

i noticed they still have a "Hook'em" tag on their web site. Why?

Is it not odd that the state capital, a true city now, with a university that has one of the best journalism schools in the country, still has a third rate paper? It was a third rate right wing rag when I went there forty years ago and it is a third rate liberal rag now.

San Antonio, which has a large number of illiterates in its population, has a much better paper and has always had a better sports staff.

Dallas and Houston also have better papers and I have heard the same of the Fort Worth paper though I haven't seen it in years.

Bohls sucks but not so much as OU.
