Barbecue in San Antonio

Is there any good BBQ in the San Antonio area? I'll be staying on the north side this weekend so anything north is fine too. I've been to Bill Miller's already, so any other suggestions are appreciated.

. . . is damn near an oxymoron.

Bill Miller's is terrible. My only suggestion would be to go out to the original Rudy's on I-10 past 1604 at Leon Springs.

BBQ Station on Loop 410 @ Harry Wurzbach is good stuff. Do the Peacock's still own/operate the "Station"?

AlamoHeightsHorn stole my suggestion. On good days, which is most of the time, the pork ribs are is good as I've had anywhere. There is a husband and wife that have owned it in the 6 years that I've been going there. I'm assuming they are the Peacocks, but I do not know them personally.

Another solid option is Harmon's in Cibolo.

Do not resort to Rudy's or especially Bill Miller's. Either of the options above is worth the trip.

Bill Miller's is not horrible considering it is a chain. It is not a place you would make a destination. Their chicken poorboys are actually pretty darn good and their breakfast tacos (which have nothing to do with BBQ) are pretty damn good. If you were drawing an analogy between various real tex mex places and fast food "mex" places and then equating it to real BBQ versus Bill Miller's, Bill Miller's would fare better.

It's not horrible. It's just not anything to go out of your way for. It's not going to make you sick and it's not going to make you crave it.

My daughter would eat Bill Miller's 3 times a day every day if we let her. There are times when I actually do crave a brisket po-boy, but there are many more times when just thinking about Bill Miller's does make me sick to my stomach. It is fast food, and really doesn't belong in a serious discussion about BBQ eateries.

I go to Barbecue Station because it is 60 seconds from my house. Lately, i have been going for the beef ribs. very good. haven't had the pork ribs. the sausage is good. first few times i tried the brisket it was very good, but i have had some clunkers thrown in since.

I had to go today to give the beef ribs a try. They were very good, but I think I still prefer the pork ribs.

Harmon's is great.

Their meats are terrific, although their sides leave a little to be desired. Then again, if you are at a BBQ joint for the sides, there is something wrong with you.

Rudy's on I-10 at Leon Springs is the best one. I would drive out of my way to go to that one...it was worth the wait in line.

The original Rudy's in Leon Springs is better than their other locations IMO

say what you want about Rudy's but the Leon Springs one is good

BBQ Station is also worth going too. I work right by there and eat there at least once a week

good brisket and I love their sausage. I know some people wouldnt dare use sauce around here but their BBQ sauce is maybe my fav of anywhere. Its light...not too thick...not sweet...kinda spicy

I wanted to go check out The Station, but I was overruled by others and we ended up at the original Rudy's. It was okay, about the same as most of the places in Houston I would go back if I was craving BBQ and in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip just to go back to Rudy's.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Grady's... there are a few locations, the one I go to is Nakoma just west of 281. Excellent catfish as well. Definitely not in the league of Artz, Ruby's and some other Austin/Centex spots, but in SA I'll take it. As other posters have noted, SA is basically a BBQ wasteland.

Exactly, Midtown. BBQ joints are BAD neighbors if they are good joints. Nobody wants them in their neighborhood. You may crave good BBQ on occasion, but NOBODY wants to smell it day in and day out and BBQ almost never shuts down the smoke.

Austin has plenty of kick-*** bbq, thanks.

And I live in Elgin.

Crosstown has definitely lost a star, btw...

I don't see how you can say that SA BBQ does anything other than suck. We are nowhere near Austin or Dallas(Sonnny Bryan's alone lifts Dallas up). I'm not that familiar w/Houston joints so you may have a point there. There is a place in Aransas Pass(my hometown) that single-handedly pwns all of SA. And sorry, BBQ Station is flat out mediocre, I'll take a House Park or even Bert's any day of the week. Rudy's is a tourist trap joke, and Bill Miller is the anti-christ, unless you want breakfast tacos or fried chicken. Again - SA is a BBQ wasteland.

Bob's smokehouse down on Rigsby was supposedly pretty good, but it burned up a couple of times and changed hands. I'm not sure it is even still there.

The Miller Sisters were pretty legendary, but I think they died a decade or two ago.
