Wow, Satchel answered my question from another post. I think the President has done some good things for veterans and also I think his aggression in the war on terror is better than most people give him credit.
Satchel's list (pulled from the Obama re-election website) seems to take multiple credits for the same bill. However, at least it tries to tell a story. My thoughts:
Overhauled the food safety system (Passed lame duck, no roll call $1.4 Billion in Government Regulation)
Advanced women's rights in the work place (What rights were being held back?)
Ended Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) in our military (Arguments on both sides on why this is no accomplishment.)
Expanded access to medical care and provided subsidies for people who can't afford it. (Code word, created more entitlements at taxpayer expense. Access has not been an issue, payment for service is. Ultimate price tag for ACA will be trillions)
Expanded the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Fixed the preexisting conditions travesty [and rescissions] in health insurance. (Pre-existing conditions is a risk factor in insurance, not healthcare. While noble in effort, it simply spreads the cost of healthcare insurance to others. Rescissions on the other hand, is an accomplishment if it actually survives. Significant increase in deficit)
Overhauled the credit card industry- CC Bill of Rights. (Common sense consumer protection probably is good, but this was a substantial government over-reach. Read your contract, don’t borrow money at 18% for non-necessities)
While Dodd-Frank bill is weak in many respects, it is still an extremely worthwhile start at re-regulating the financial sector. ($19 billion dollar tax which substantially harmed businesses relying upon banks for working capita. Anything associated with these two scumbags who lead the debacles of Fannie and Freddie is trash)
Created The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. (Wow, kinda rolling with Dodd-Frank here. Another federal agency at the cost of taxpayers that failed to really address the problems. Why were Fannie and Freddie excluded?)
Ordered the Pentagon to cover expenses of families of fallen soldiers if they wish to be on site when the body arrives back in the US (2009) (Never heard of this. If true, I would agree with this effort)
Ended the Bush-era “blackout” imposed on media coverage of the return of fallen US soldiers (2009) * Note: The media is now permitted to cover the story pending adherence to respectful rules and with the approval of the fallen soldier’s family (With family consent, I agree. Note that this rule was supported by Clinton and both Bushes)
Ordered better body armor to be procured for US troops (Common sense, not sure an “accomplishment)
Secured Funding for new Mine Resistant Ambush Vehicles (2009) * Note: The old Hummers were very vulnerable to roadside explosives and an alarming percentage of our soldiers lost in Iraq were on account of IEDs (See above.)
Is improving housing for military personnel (2009) (Good, but how?)
Initiating a new policy to promote federal hiring of military spouses. (Government over-reach when forcing anything based upon discrimination. Besides, initiating means “not done yet.”)
Ended the Bush-era practice of awarding “no-bid” defense contracts (2009) (Obama promised to end all no bid contracts – however, awarded supporter’s company $433 million no-bid contract last September. Blatant lie.)
Authorized construction of additional health centers to care for veterans (2009) (Not yet accomplished)
New GI Bill for returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan
Signed bill providing assistance for caregivers of veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan (2010) * Note: The omnibus bill does the following: Training, funding, and counseling for caregivers; promoting pilot childcare programs for women vets under treatment at the VA; independent oversight to prevent abuse; readjustment counseling for National Guard and reservist units; etc. (Same bill I think. I hope something is there to prevent fraud and abuse medicare and Medicaid are exposed to)
Eliminated co-payments for veterans who are catastrophically disabled (2010) (Not entirely but a good first step, again several of the “accomplishments are the same program)
Fulfilled campaign promise to have combat troops (90,000) out of Iraq by August 31, 2010 (Did not occur until Dec 2011)
Established a new interagency task force to assist veterans owning small businesses (2010) * Note: The efforts include promoting federal contract opportunities, improve access to loans and capital, mentor assistance programs, etc. ( I support military programs, but a new task force?)
Signed The Families of Fallen Heroes Act, which covers the moving costs of immediate family members of those lost in service (military, intelligence, and security personnel) (2010) (Credit due)
Ordered the killing of Osama Bin Laden (So did Bush. I give Obama credit for having it occur during his term. However, any attempt to take full credit is laughable)
Eliminated several other Al-Qaeda leaders (Credit due)
Begun the drawdown of forces from Afghanistan (Still there until 2024)
End-run Republican obstructionism by recess-appointing Richard Cordray to run the Consumer Financial Protection Board. (This is an accomplishment? Laughable)
Require health plans to disclose how much of the premium goes to patient care. (As with most narrow focused regulations, the impact was immediate. Health care premiums have skyrocketed)
The economy is not listed once in these "accomplishments." The anchor of unemployment, ballooning deficits and class/social warfare will hamper is re-election efforts in my honest opinion.
