Bachman: Beware 'The Soviet Union'

I watched the 57 states clip a few more times,The Link and he actually says after talking about his travels ""We've been to all fifty....pause...adds 7" then the rest of it.

So we can view the 57 states "gaffe" a few ways.

A.) The now President was tired after months of campaigning and misspoke.

B.) He started to say fifty and realized that's not true and explained the exact number of states he's been to.

C.) He was making a joke.

D.)He's a moron and doesn't know how many states the are despite the 50 state quarters and stars on the flag. Of course, I suppose it's possible since he was in Kenya in Kindergarten studying the Quran, burning flags and forging his birth certificate.

Why do you choose D?

the 57 states thing is a joke. any imbecile who watches the clip knows exactly what he means. he didn't say affirmatively that there are 57 states.

a misstatement is completely different from an affirmative statement that is incorrect.

She misspoke. As Obama did. Of course neither are a big deal. People misspeak. It's just that liberals seem so afraid of conservative women that they over dramatize their misstatements. Any Repulican that is going to win in this day is going to have to be much better in front of the camera. Liberals can be forgiven for misstatements. Conservatives get labeled the "Queen of Rage" or "Frontier Barbie" or some such thing.

Bevo, a typing error is nowhere near the same thing.

Consciously saying 57 states is stupid, plain and simple.

Bachman invoking the Soviet Union is much worse however....

An error in typing?

You either left out the word "think" after the word "don't" or you made several grammatical/usage mistakes.

Of course, you never misspeak because you are just that good.

Obviously, Obama doesn't believe there are 57 states. It was a mistake.

Just as obviously as Bachmann (presumably) knows that the Soviet Union is dead. It was a mistake. At least, let's hope so.

Just as you meant to say "I don't think I would" but left out the word "think." You "misspoke." It was a mistake. It was just ironic because, in the process of claiming you would never make this kind of mistake, you did exactly that.

In Bachmann's case, I just think it's funny because she makes so freakin' many of them. I mean almost daily.

A gaffe is a gaffe. But, when I heard her say this week that if she's elected there'll be $2.00 gas, I know she is a certified lunatic!

Hook'em!!!

No Bevo, you are really grasping at my word omission and trying really hard to equate it to something along the lines off saying that there are 57 states, or that Thomas Jefferson was the nations first president, or that Margaret Thatcher is the Prime Minister of England, or that the Soviet Union is rising, or that Tom Hanks landed on the moon...

Its not even close. Are you ever going to say that 1+1=6? Are you? Some things are so obvious to an educated person that there is no way you get the answer wrong. Typing a sentence and missing a word isnt the same thing.

Obama never said there are 57 states. Why can't you admit that?

In your case you just left out a word in your typing. You probably started to word your sentence one way and then switched to another. The result was a sentence that didn't make sense. Obama started to word his sentence one way, then changed. Like yours, the result didn't make sense. What's the difference?

All politicians make gaffes. To compare Ford to Obama to Biden to Bachmann without looking at anything else is a fruitless endeavour.

I find Bachmann to be an idiot-spewing politician (the kind who seems to be much admired nowadays by the GOP, much to my dismay) based not on this one comment, but on many of her other comments, including those which she has had time to reflect upon before talking.

I can't believe that people take Bachmann seriously. I really can't.

GJ -- Ford was privy to intelligence reports that let us know the Soviet grip on eastern Europe was slipping. He wasn't wrong if he was talking among people with whom he held his intelligence briefing. but the average voter was 10 years behind and Ford's insight looked foolish. Ford wasn't stupid, but he sure could look that way.

I make typing mistakes all the time, but thank you for putting words in my mouth Bevo....

Again, leaving out a word when typing a sentence is not the same thing as making a completely erroneous statement while talking, especially statement that should be common knowledge to the average high school student, let alone someone running for public office.

They are not the same thing, no matter how hard you try to make it so.

Shiner, do you believe Barack Obama, who graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude and lived all across the United States, did not know in 2008 how many states there are in the U.S.?

I think Im going to run for Prime Minister of the United States...

Errrrrr, I mean, President. Sorry, I was just tired when I made that statement.

Good...so we've come to a consensus on the number of states and came move on. What a relief.

On the corps thing he probably read it from the teleprompter and pronounced it phonetically. It's a lazy error and shows he wasn't very engaged in the speech. That's a little troubling but says nothing about his intelligence or ability to govern.

And transcripts...I've walked through this several times.

His grades at Occidental were good enough to transfer to Columbia. His grades at Columbia were good enough to get into Harvard Law School. And at Havard Law School, he graduated magna cum laude. That's all publicly available information. Why do you need to see the transcripts?

I agree not knowing how to pronounce corpsman does not reflect on his intelligence
I do find it odd that someone giving a Medal to a deserving member of our military would not know the correct prounuciation.I am certain his handlers has ZERO idea a PoTUS did not know how to pronounce corpsman or they would have coached him on it.

I also remember that Oama thought Hirohito signed the surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri.
and thought his Uncle liberated auschwitz.
Hstory must not be his fave

Maybe the guy's a zombie and Obama's pronunciation was correct?

I just in most cases these speaking gaffes are completely overblown. Especially when it's one word, which can be explained a lot of different ways. It's grasping at straws and a distraction to the political debate. Some are good for a few laughs, but it's ridiculous to bring them up years later to show someone's intelligence.

@ Crockett:
Your observation has merit, and could very well be the case. If so, Ford should have realized that the American electorate was not privy to his information and had a very different view of the USSR and Eastern Europe.

As far as the voters being "10 years behind" in their cognitions, they had good reason for that, considering that for over 20 years politicians and pundits had been painting the Soviet Union as THE existential threat to the US and Western Europe. What is more, the Soviet reaction to attempted reforms in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 supported the conventional thinking that the countries in Eastern Europe were under the thumb of the Soviet oppressor (heaven knows, the coaches who taught our history and geography classes sure expressed that view).
