Austin Dive Bars

Was at Lala's last night. Love the jukebox, can get my Buddy Holly fix. Also, can smoke cigarettes without anyone's panties getting in a wad.

i went to poodle dog for the first time this last weekend, which is weird because i've lived within 5 minutes from there for over three years

what a trip

there was a band playing covers of ratt, whitesnake, def leppard, quiet riot

i couldnt figure out if they were for real or a spoof band, but in retrospect i think that since the guitar player had multiple flying v's in his dojo that they were serious

we used to have a dive bar night. We called it a "windowless bar night". If it had any window that light could enter through (covered up windows are OK) the bar was not allowed. Ginny's, Poodle dog, Lala's, and horse show lounge were all on the list.

Not as much as a dive as the other bars on the list but I think it deserves a mention is Showdown bar on the drag. Showdown has by far the best "happy hour" specials, on Fridays they have "happy minutes" from 3:00 to 3:15 a pint of any draft beer was $1 limit 2 at a time.
We would routinely start the night after class at showdown. They would only serve you your next 2 once you finished what you had we started every Fri trying to get to our 3rd round before the end of Happy Minutes.
Good Times.

Rabbits.

Dunno if it has changed but, it has been there since at least the mid 70's when my dad ran in there once while I waited in the car for, well, wtf was he running in there for?

Over Thanksgiving I went to Beverley's. Me and a friend have lived right by there for years and were always too scared to go in...

The place smells like a public bathroom. Only a few bikers there around the fireplace. The bartender was a nice lady, who was 5 months pregnant. She informed us she used to be a dancer but had to quit when she got knocked up. Makes sense.

After she smoked the last of her cigarettes, she bummed a couple Marlboro Reds off us. The End.

Rabbit's Lounge? I will never, ever, ever spend a dime in that establishment.

The owner is a pervert. I dated his step-daughter for about a year during college and she would tell me stories about how he would enter her room at night, feel her up, and ask "when are you going to give me some?" He's a child molester.

No way. I am never stepping foot in that place. I am not giving money to child molesters. The rest of you can make your own choices, but I'm never going there.

Run by a kiddie toucher? That even makes it more of a dive, Punt! And I don't recall advocating for its owner, just adding it to the list.

Maybe we should differentiate between "divey" and just plain seedy. Never been in Rabbits but I remember sitting in that parking lot as an 8 year old wishing my dad would hurry the f up. I did like the Banditos' bikes though.

Dee's & Jim's is the Moe's of Austin

well i also agree that one shouldnt support establishments that are owned by people with a disturbing past but i'll say this about rabbits: i dont know the owner original owner, dont know any stories about the original owner and i am in no position to say they are or are not true. i do know that i had a few beers at rabbits with the son of the owner (if its the right guy, he went to cornell) and he seemed like a genuine guy. he also said he was taking more of an interest in the bar and would be presumably be taking over one day. so to each their own, just saying, dont crucify the son for the sins of the father (whatever they may be). that being said, any bar on the east side that isnt gentrified will get the benefit of the doubt from me. but yay to dive bars all around!

if y'all want og dive bars with a mexican flair, hit up iron gate and bars of that end. one or two others but i'm buzzed and can't think of their names right now .. .

No, I won't harass the son for the sins of the father. I don't have any problem with him. He was the 'little brother.' He was probably 8 years old at the time that I was dating his older step-sister.

Later, he worked for an Austin state senator and I interacted with him at the Capitol, though I never told him that I dated his older step-sister and I never mentioned that his father molested her because we had work to do.

It's just that it is difficult to deal with sexual abuse.

Apparently, the same pedophile owns Rabbit's. Here's an article from the Austin Chronicle; although they spelled his last name wrong.

yep, the ******* crusader has found this thread. while i agree with what you say, po1d, leave it alone. this is a thread about dive bars in austin, not who you like & don't (and again, that is a VERY legit reason to not like someone).

Surprised "The Red Scoot Inn".. or "Red's Scoot In" hasn't been listed yet. It's a dive on the East side that was the 'in' thing about a year ago with some hipsters that I knew. I'm sure they're on to the next big thing by now

so it may have been reclaimed by the locals already.

trophy's is more of a **** hole than a dive. never seen such reverse discrimination due to not having tattoos or close that fit.

Angles was down by Nasties - free drinks on Wed, I believe, from 9-11.

Mob scene and nobody ever got out of line, only worth it it you got their early and got a table.

"Papers" was on the bottom of Tri-towers near Trickey Mickey's

Old man out.

There is a total hole in the wall, North of 183, at the Burnett Rd exit. Don't take the first McNeil, but the next right on McNeil. Across from the gas station that will be on your right is a total hole in the wall.

They serve domestic beers so cold your fillings will hurt. They are friendly, have washer games outside, and pool tables inside. They are open crazy hours, mainly a happy hour crowd.

If you go, let me know the name of the place,! p.s. the waitress/bartenders are fine as fresh honey.
