Austin Bars/Restaurants You'd Cry Over

We got to Waterloo at about 9 on Sunday.

They ran out of beer at about 7:30.

I saw several shed tears, which got me to thinking.

Are there any places in Austin that, if they closed, you'd either cry or come close?

My first nominee would be Hole In the Wall. You'd be surprised to know how much of the Texan's business (at least during my time) was conducted in the back room of the Hole in The Wall. Then again, if you saw The Texan during that time, maybe you wouldn't be surprised. I drive by there at least once a month and think that I really need to stop in a get a beer and reassure myself that it isn't going anywhere, but I never quite do. Maybe tomorrow.

I think Trudy's might get a nomination from me, too. By weight, I think I was about 20 percent Mexican martini my senior year.

Any one else got any?

Being in California right now...

My girlfriend's legs.
Dirty's
Soul Kitchen
Ego's
Dot's Place
Deep Eddy Cabaret

There are a lot more, but these are my 'weeklies.' Except my girlfriend's legs.

Anyone listing El Arroyo will be shot on sight.

you do like 311, don't you. is that because that's where the high school girls hang out?

I miss:
Liberty Lunch (when big business killed the music)
Steamboat ( " " " " " " )
Club Foot ( way back when)
The Texas Tavern ( used to be in the Texas Union )
Wylie's ( where the TEXAS football teams learned to drink)
Angle's ( the absolute coolest club Ausitn ever had)
Alvin Ord's ( K.O.'ed by Schlotsky's)
The Avenue ( when you could party on Congress)
El Matamoros ( home of the original crispy taco)
La Tapatia (great Tex-Mex near 6th)
Christie's ( ancient Austin seafood place)
The Night Hawk ( awesome food)
GM steakhouse ( only a UT grad could explain)
not dead, but it is to the blues... Antone's
not a bar/restaurant but still missed...customer service.
OH! my favorite lost treasure of Austin....the Bowl-a-rama

R.I.P.

Kerbey Lane - beats IHOP like a step child

Trudy's without a doubt

Double Dave's in Castillian or on San Jacinto

Salt Lick

Maggie Mae's Pub - The club sucked. All the really strange people hung out in the pub.

Stubb's

Texas Wolf, you are old school Austin. Not many people remember those places. I do, but was too young to frequent them.

My picks:
Cloak Room
Cain and Abel's
Shoal Creek Saloon
Sugar's (especially since they got Golden Tee)

Trudy's
Shady Grove
Mike's Pub

All food places. You can always find a beer. But you can't always find a Green Chile Chicken Fried Steak!

Texas Wolf,

You must have been in school while I was there. I haven't thought about Angle's in a long time. We used to stumble out of there and eat at the taco stand across from Mad Dog and Beans.

Texas Wolf- I agree
G/M steakhouse had the best burgers in town and was cheap too.
Likewise, La Tapatia was probably the best mexican food place in town. I heard it was shutdown because the owner decided it wasn't a good idea to pay taxes. I have been searching ever since for mexican food as good as theirs. I think Maudies is the closest thing I have found with all the east 6th street places a close second.
Place that would suck if it closed down? would have to be cain and abels. Too old now to go there but still is a good reminder of my college days.
Also- Scholz closing would be awful. Where would we drink before the games?

CAIN AND ABLE'S...I WOULD BE HEARTBROKEN IF IT CLOSED, AS THE BETTER PART OF MY TIME THROUGH COLLEGE WAS SPENT THERE. OKAY I'LL BE HONEST...A LOT OF TIME IS STILL SPENT THERE.

For Eats:

Hoover's, I just love their food. Kicks the crap out of Threadgill's.
The Omletry, very good food, better than kirby lane, and what great service.

For a club, I would have to say the escape club on Riverside. I think they turned it into a comedy place (BadDog comedy theater). Very large and really fun.

The Tavern because, hey, it's air conditioned! And because it's a damn good place to watch a Monday Night Football game.

I would absolutely weep tears of blood and pain if The Parlor ever closes. If you haven't been there, you don't know what pizza is supposed to taste like.

chitwood- don't be pissed about the electric. there were offers to take it over and keep it the same, but the owner was greedy and wanted the big bucks for parking for the condos next door.
