ATT U-Verse - any good?

Yes, in Austin, since mid July, you can record 2 HD channels at the same time, or 4 non HD channels at the same time. Not sure about 1 HD + 3 non HD, I just haven't tried it.

Forget the Total Home DVR, or recording 4 channels at a time. The very best feature of U-verse that Dish or DirecTv can't touch is the zero commitment. No contract. If you decide to get rid of it tomorrow, then you get rid of it without a penalty.

I knew I was leaving Comcast, so why not give Uverse a chance. Try the satellites and you basically are committing to 2 years.

I don't understand the rollout of Uverse. I've had Uverse for about a month or so now. I was curious if they were offering any new deals, so I went online and just typed in my next door neighhbor's address to check it out. AT&T said that it wasn't available for them. Checked the address on the other side of me, and it came back unavailable as well.

I wonder if AT&T are rolling it out slowly even in one neighborhood to ensure that the performance remains within standards.

I checked out my address and it looks like it is available for me. I've got a technical question though that I couldn't find the answer to on the website. How does the service get into the house? Is is via the standard cable company coax cable line, the phone line, or some sort of setup like a sattilite? The reason I ask is that most of my house has very very old coax cable that I've never been able to get to carry an HD signal. Thus, I currently only have HD on one TV where I ran a modern day piece of coax to straight from the box outside. That line carries my HD signal as well as my Comcast internet service. I really want to get HD to other TV's in the house as well.

they rewired my friends place. took a while, but guy didn't seem to mind. might want to talk to them to see about that, it was about 8-10 months ago

Anybody else having sound issues? Especially with CBS. There seems to be a dramatic difference in the level at which people talk, sound effects, and music. I seem to have to turn CBS up much louder than the other stations. Also, the picture on CBS seems to be changing aspect ratios randomly, like they might be experimenting with something. There's always a black bar at the top of the screen (like watching something with the theater aspect ratio, but it's only on the top) and every now and again, it will change ratios to have black bars on all 4 sides.

Am I alone here?

Houston Horn93,
they can connect via coax or via phone line.

At my place the guy preferred the phone line. I didn't care either way. Took about an hour and a half to get internet and cable up and running, but I didn't shut down timewarner until that same day, so i could still be on the internet/work and stay busy while he did his thing.
I then called timewarner and cancelled immediately, then drove over and dumped off my boxes, modem and remotes. It was a beautiful day to be liberated of TW.

After reading this thread and other online reviews I just placed my order for U-verse. My installation date is October 31st. That was the first date they had available.

Cost wise, how does it compare? I guess I can rumble through the website, which I will, but what are real life instances? I would only have one HD set in the house.

I wish cable or tv was a la carte but oh well. I love Grande but if U has more HD channels then that is the route I want. Same with Satellite. I am going to ask Grande how many channels they plan upgrading to and when to compare and contrast. I need to first get an HD tv though before any of this is an issue so I have time.

Interesting thread.

It looks like pre govt taxes it's going to run about $12 less per month versus Comcast. I'll of course know for sure when I get my first bill. That's even with getting the service on 2 additional TV's over what I have Comcast hooked up to.

They don't charge for the other tv's though, do they? It would be the same cost for a person with one television as a person with five, right?

I am happy with my Grande but if U has more HD channels and Grande is not upgrading soon, or if I get to select what channels I want more than with typical cable, I am sold.

I wish I did not have to pay for the 90 percent of channels I don't watch.

Coopspoppa-

Where in Cedar Park are you?

We're just north of Avery Ranch, of Cypress/Brushy Creek., and when we called yesterday, were told service wasn't available out here.

Believe all TV receivers require wire, not wireless. Now the 'gateway' should have wireless internet access for your computers - just as retail routers have wireless capabilities. Their setup will have 1. a gateway 2. one DVR 3. multible 'set top boxes'.
The gateway is the central hub -if you will.. everything branches off that on a wire.

(On the equipment $ ques)

I have the U200 plan. Unless ATT has changed, there is no monthly charge, at least line itemized for 3 TVs. More thatn that, then you get into extra $.

What they doing is just making the charges for up-to-3 TV setup opaque- its rolled into the flat monthly rate (re: the fine print). Also, their disconnect dept. will try to rope you back in by offering you less $ by removing DVR from service (possibly some set top boxes also- not sure on this one).

The premium packages may offer unlimited equip., IIRC. Might be worth asking when you go to order.

wow

I must have been under the promo. It was last year, about this time frame...just when the Austin roll-out began. (they cold called me).

yeah its changed. when i signed up, they offered 3 receivers free (1dvr) and $100 back after 2 months. now they only give out the 1 dvr receiver for free.

and the receivers are not wireless, they talk to each other through the coax lines in the home. The gateway provides wireless internet and connects to the main receiver with a cat 5 line - that's how you can log on and set the dvr.

I wish it was available in my neighborhood in Cedar Park (Lakeline Oaks/Cypress Mill). It's apparently within a mile or so of us (my buddy who lives just north of Cypress Creek has it). I'd like to get the U200 package, cancel TWC, and cancel my home phone w/ AT&T. I calculate I'd be saving over $80 a month.

FYI, they offer a $200 rebate if you order online. The rebate is redeemed online and you only have 45 days or so to redeem it. If you forget, or never get the letter explaining the process to you (happened to me), the rebate will expire.

However, I called their reward center and they were cool enough to give the rebate to me without any argument.
