Can't wait to see her in action!

There is almost nothing positive in the men's game around the dunk except for 2 points and the fan reaction. It is an in your face play and causes lots of animosity on the court.

There is so much publicity these days about a woman who is athletic enough to rise above the rim. Screw the dunk and just let them play!! I was too tired?? Then don't enter. How basic is this?

I'm with you on this one, Driftwood.

I say raise the board 5 feet higher for men and make them actually SHOOT a ball.

Right now, dunks are like me dropping a wadded up piece of paper in my trash can....

However, there is something kind of fascinating about women dunking, just because of the novelty.

If you can't get up to the rim on any particular day then you probably shouldn't be in the contest anyway. Slam dunk contests are supposed to be spectacular, not just showing the ability to muster one over the rim on your best day.

If you want to be in the contest bring something big, like Griner will probably do next year.

We have a recruit heading our way who can dunk and that gets negative posts??? Good lord. She can dunk me in the trash can if it means we can compete with the likes of Tennesee and UConn again. I can't wait.

I have good friends in Las Vegas who has seen Ashley Gayle play several games. They remarked that in pre-game warmups Ashley would often dunk at least once. This young lady has good size, athleticism and the talent necessary to contribute immediately.
Perhaps some posters can defer their negative comments and jabs until after
she has played a game or two?

My comments are not meant to be negative toward Gayle. They are a commentary on dunking ability. I appreciate that she can play around the rim but that does not mean that she is qualified to be in a slam dunk contest. If she can usually dunk once in pre-game that is probably not a sign that she should be in a slam dunk contest.

The dunk is not a big part of the women's game so this is no reflection on Gayle in any way. I can hardly wait to see her in a Texas uniform.

Also, I hope that all of those in a slam dunk contest are required to use the same size ball.

Sorry that I sounded negative toward her...not my intention. I am thrilled to have her headed to Austin!

Remember, Candace Parker won that contest three years ago.

Welcome to Texas Ashley. We can't wait.

Spunk - "material for starting a fire"; also "A quality of a person that describes having courage, spirit, or determination."

I love it that she's coming to Texas!

i hate to be negative, but this thread is getting ridiculous. i'm really starting to question the actual KNOWLEDGE of the game of basketball amongst several on this board.

Just pointing out the fact that the smaller ball is easier to grasp and also has more clearance when passing through the rim. I've shot with both sized basketballs and can tell you that my free throw percentage and three point percentage are higher when using the smaller ball....although neither are anything to brag about.

I'm pretty sure the smaller ball is exclusive to the WNBA. At the college level it's the same size for men and women. Anyone know something I don't abou this?

I think in international play men and women play with the same sized ball, but in the US, high school girls, college women, and the WNBA all use a slightly smaller ball.

Well I leanred something new. I don't follow the men's game much so I had no idea the women had a different ball. I do remember that was a topic of discussion when the WNBA was formed.
