Are We Forked?

I'd rather go deep into the NIT, even have a chance to win it, than be one-and-done in the big tournament. I think it will be better experience to play a few games on the road, gain some confidence, and take some momentum into 2012-13.

I want to make the NCAA just to keep the streak alive. Pretty cool company to keep.

We'll beat OU and lose to KU which will probably make the 1st game in the Big 12 tourney a "play-in" game. Looks like we'll get another shot at Baylor.

Flame away if you must but Texas needs a "Bruce Pearl" type - minus the baggage. If we could get a coach to come in and do something about fan support, seating, etc..., the rest should sell itself.

I'm not advocating for Barnes' dismissal; however, something I read last week really disturbed me. I can't remember the article or its source but it quoted Barnes as stating that he's done all he could and that the team did what it was supposed to do in practice but forgot everything during the games.

Can you imagine the backlash had Mack Brown said the same thing last year? Brown made (hopefully) the necessary changes. I can't believe a coach at The University of Texas can make an excuse like this and get away with it.

Knoxville, you and the others, who seem to want to replace Barnes should likely be rooting for Texas to miss the NCAA tournament. I think Barnes is safe as long as he just gets us to the Dance. Under-performing once there doesn't seem to have any effect (see losses to many, many lesser ranked teams like Az last year, or LSU in 2004- I think that was the year?).
But I will say the coaches now in place at Tech and OU will make things tougher in short order. Drew has already trumped the recruiting in state. Barnes very well could be an endangered species soon enough. But with Dodds 108 years old, he won't be the one to do the deed.

Knoxville, you should re-read my post. I didn't state you wanted Texas in the NIT. It was a conditional statement "if you want Barnes gone, then you should root for Texas to miss the NCAA tournament".
Now did I believe you wanted Barnes gone? Well yes as you wrote something like "Texas needs a Bruce Pearl-like coach".
I think it is all moot anyway. Texas is going to miss the Dance barring something very unforeseen occurring in Lawrence, KS, or the Big 12 tournament. And I do think the lack of televisions with access to the LHN will be brought up by Scott Drew when he talks with recruits. And I don't think Tech and OU stay down long. Thus, I think Barnes will need to up his game or be toppled. And then, I agree with you that Texas needs a guy with Pearl-like enthusiasm. But I think Tom Crean stays in Bloomington. Did you see the crowd at IU last night? Crackling electricity that Texas gets when we play OU in football!

Sorry if I misunderstood your intent.

To me, having Barnes as a coach is a "catch-22". We now have national exposure, get some fantastic recruits and always make the tourney.

On the other hand, there seems to be a ceiling that has been reached, the fan base sucks (not completely his fault) and he seems to be out-coached at times when the game comes down to coaching over playing.

To clarify my point on the fan base. There are things a head coach can do to bring excitement and enthusiasm to an arena. I know his hands are somewhat tied; however, it would seem that he could or should be able to find a way to create an honest-to-goodness student section w/ enthusiasm. That topic has been debated for years so I'll drop it now. I just feel as if I have a unique perspective having lived through the Bruce Pearl years here in Knoxville.

As to the tourney, I do feel we're screwed now because we're currently on the bubble and have a 98% chance of having two more losses by tourney time. We aren't going to beat Kansas and we aren't going to win the Big 12 tourney. Best we'll do is 2-2 and I don't think that gets us in.
