Are We Forked?

I am sort of a mind that we needed two of three versus Oklahoma, OSU, and Baylor to stay in the bracket. And we only got one victory. I know we are 0-7 versus the RPI top 25, which isn't awesome. I also know the home loss to NC State is getting worse by the hour. I have to think it is now NIT without an extended run in Big 12 tourney that includes win over Mizzu, KU, or Baylor. Do we have any top 50 wins? Maybe Iowa State and Kansas State count there, but both of those teams have wins over us and over top 25 teams. Man it makes my head hurt, but I think we have a fork in us. I can almost hope that we stumble at Tech so I don't have any false hope come Selection Sunday. Let's hope Barnes can convince Brown and Myck not to do how every other decent player we have had has done, bolt Barnes so we can be good again next year and start a new streak!

NC State was neutral site but it still is looking bad as they may be our main bubble competition and have head to head. Last night ended any hopes absent a huge upset in Lawrence or a couple of upsets in Kansas City.

Well, we had a chance to make our own destiny but now we'll have to see what's happening elsewhere to make it. Assuming we win our next two and lose to KU, we'll be in a position where we have to see what happens as far as available spots, who's hot late, etc...

Not saying we are forked, but the table is set and all of the eating utensils are in place around the plate.

Frankly, I'd rather see us go to the NIT and have the opportunity for extended practice time - an NCAA bid is almost a certain one and done, whereas we might get a couple of extra weeks worth of practices out of an NIT bid.

Are chances to do anything significant in the NCAA tournament this year are zero. Face it, we are just an average team, period. I hope we get into the NIT and do something with the opportunity, but after watching this year's team, I'm not optimistic.

The Link

Uh, don't look now, but with Kansas St. upsetting Missouri and the results of tonights games. We are still in the Tourney according to bracketology.

Yep- Kansas State went out and grabbed a damn bid. Now Texas has to simply hope our good grace with a room full of ADs is enough to skulk in. Then you revisit our holding our nose up at clinging to the LHN albatross, we are done for certain. No leg to stand on this season barring a win in Lawrence or reaching at least the finals of the conference tournament- neither do I see happening.

Barnes said some pretty negative remarks about this team in the morning AAS. Basically, they practice well, and forget everything in games.
Tournament chances? Still likely if we win last three, haha, and possible with two out of last three wins, but I don't see it happening.

^^Yep.

There is an extremely clear line in the standings that should be there come Selection Sunday.

There are five obvious "ins" right now and four obvious "outs". Texas is right smack dab in the middle meaning we're good if the Big 12 gets 6 and screwed if the Big 12 gets 5.

I disagree with winning the conference tourney to get in. But just getting to that game... possibly. Four more wins with losses to KU and whoever else in the championship game would put us at 21-13 for the season. I really don't think they'd keep us out with 21 wins at that point, especially considering one of the teams we'd have to beat to get to the final game would be one of the "top 50" teams.

Wichita State got screwed out of a NCAA bid last year and then shined in the NIT. I think their "shining," despite the obvious fact that a smaller audience saw it, led to their success this year. If we can pull it together and win against mediocre competition, it'll lead to more team camaraderie and possibly a better season next year.

We're basically assured a first round NCAA tourney loss if we make it, despite Rex's statements. Look at what Barnes has done with better personnel.

For those saying we ONLY have to get to the tournament championship game - what on earth gives anyone the notion that this team can win three games in the tournament? They can't even put together two decent halves.

Well, they'd only need to win 2 games in the tourney to make the championship if we can somehow stay ahead of OK State in the standings. But I get your point. When I state that they'd need to "make" the championship game to get to the NCAA's, I'm not implying that they will actually be able to do that.

I think an NIT trip will do Barnes some good. He was in full-blown "new leaf" mode last year, with his summer job watching the Utah Jazz and turning our squad into a 27-7 powerhouse that was a botched inbounds pass away from the Sweet 16 (and possibly further). This year he was too panicky, or lack thereof. He has stated several times that the team can't listen or handle complex game situations... so maybe he should try coaching them in those situations? The NIT is a good opportunity for that. The ground is more equal and the teams aren't as complete as NCAA tourney teams.

A loss @ Tech and anyone who still things Texas is NCAA worthy, well they have their head stuck in the west Texas sand. Last I saw Texas is down 3 points with 3:48. The praise I handed Barnes was a bit premature. We again suck approaching March!

Still probably need an upset in Lawrence or in Kansas City to get in the tourny but that 10-0 run keeps a slim hope still alive.

Almost were fully forked today, but stayed alive by the skin of the teeth. The RPI was 53 going into tday with 3 top 50 wins (one against top-15 Temple). Beat OU, lose to KU and win 2 rounds in the tournament for 21-13, and we should make it. Go 1-2 or worse from here on and we are surely out. Go 3-2 and we almost surely make the dance. If we go 2-2, there is a very faint outside chance but probably not much of one. Of course, beating KU would help, but that ain't gonna happen. R.J.

The only even matchup between these Texas and Tech teams is of their incredibly low basketball IQs. Even with no real quality on the front line, Texas' overall talent exceeds that of Tech.

I still think we get one of the last four spots if we beat OU, lose to KU, and win one game in the conference tournament. The Big 12 was underrated as a complete conference all year, with teams like ISU and KSU just now getting the props they deserve.

I'll give our team credit for hanging tough, but if they were playing any other Conference team today they would have lost. Other than that...Coach Barnes seems to have NO offense for this team to play in half-court.

I hate to admit this...but, I'd rather not make the playoffs than be in a play-in game vs. Hampton University.

Hook'em!!!

69,
I agree with most of your points. Seems like Barnes is unable to get it done in the last two minutes of close games.

He has never been an offensive minded coach. Few pick and rolls; not screening to clear shooters; not cutting hard to the basket off motion, offensive flow seems missing in action.

But Barnes has always seemed a little behind the curve on the offensive end.

At least we won a close game today. Gotta give the guys credit for hanging tough. Its a win.
