Anticipating Spring Football

I don't know why people are making such a big deal out of 1 PLAY regardless of what happened. Even the Bama and Georgia defenses gave up more than 1 big play to crappy offenses.

He hss been a star in camp. Making play after play. Most everyone assumed it would be Brooks and Baxter as our top 2 running backs.
If Brooks doesn't come back healthy Red is going to be the likely starter.

Don’t sleep on Blue being up there with JB and Red also.I have heard that he is looking great in camp.
Needless to say, we might even be shockingly better in that room than some might think.

Exactly. Some of these folks will jump off the bridge just because its the popular thing to do. Its freaking practice. Again, how does a guy go untouched in practice???

Yeah I'd say committee.

Brooks and Keilan have the boat carries. And Blue. Baxter is young. And Red.

I'm glad the team is giving Red kudos for making the switch and doing well.

Spring game Saturday. Not much discussion about it. I don't plan on driving to Austin. More than anything I want to see: A) A DE that can get after the QB B) A QB that can connect on the long pass. A will improve the whole defense tremendously and maybe Texas won't rank as one of the worst 3rd down defenses in the country. I think the run game will be too generic to make any assertions.

I am thinking the same. After 3 straight spring games and too many to count over the years, the huge hassle of descent hotel rooms and parking way too far out, will be sitting this one out. Like someone else mentioned, I came away disappointed last year. Other than watching Neyor’s great play, the rest was just a practice. And I would much rather the players come away healthy than beat each other up.
So here’s to having a clean and injury free practice. I will be in the stands in September.

I’m going because,,,, well just because, even though controlled, it is some Texas football. Having to stay way up north though because of the stupid high rates on hotels in closer.

may the best RB start regardless of experience.

TFB saying Keilan Robison may be destined for the portal. With the emergence of Red, it would directly take away from KR's playing time. Red is the talk of camp right now, offensively. They also point to the great camp Jaydon Blue has had, saying he's likely earned himself some PT next fall.

Two redshirt freshman players on defense that I haven’t heard mentioned in camp are LB Trevell Johnson and edge Derrick Brown.
I assume Trevell is still developing as he was listed below 200 lbs. and is down on the depth chart. Derrick was moved from lb to edge before camp and his speed sure could be used at that pass rush position.
Anyone else heard how they are progressing? Thanks.

I've hardly ever heard anything about Trevell, but he's smaller than most of the DB's. Something there doesn't seem right.

Harris transferred to USF.

I'm now reading Johnson, along with Thompson and Brown to the portal, probably more. 2 of those may be a good thing, but Thompson's speed can always be a game breaker.

Brown was never going to crack the 2-deep here. In order to play, he'd need to switch positions, and he didn't have the speed to do so. So many people last year were like "why can't he be the new Overshown?" without regard for the fact that Overshown brought his speed/cover ability, which Brown never had.

Thompson hurts more. He's going to make someone very, very happy with their outside WR depth.

Johnson was never going to be slated ahead of the incoming freshmen LBs on the depth chart.

Well that answers why I had not heard anything on Johnson and Brown. Timely insight.
Agree with you on Thompson, you really can’t coach blistering speed. That one stung.

Thompson had one catch last year for 32 yards. Not bad though he also had a couple of drops. He is fast but was getting buried in the depth chart. Once Cook got here, Thompson was just a matter of time. Cook is more polished and almost as fast.
His loss will not hurt

Good luck to him. He's certainly a track loss.

Wrong Harris. (DJ) Harris portaled to USF last year.
Now ” Derrick” Harris just portaled today and has yet to name his new school.
I know it can be confusing with too many D Harris’s on the team.lol
Harris portaled to USF. Brown entered the portal today. Harris. Brown. I know it can be confusing when both their first names start with a 'D'. lol.

When did he have a drop?

Brenen Thompson, Derrick Brown and Trevell Johnson will all reportedly enter their name in the transfer portal.

When it is crickets on hearing about some 2nd or 3rd year players, that usually indicates to me they are struggling to get playing time or maybe just not a great fit.
You have to wonder now if Charles Wright will continue to stick with us.
I do think we need another portal tight end and an edge player just for the fact of injuries that may occur.

We have 6 scholarship TEs. Maybe one of them can convert to defense if we need it.

I was just a little concerned if JT or Helm got banged up. That would just leave just Juan Davis with any experience at all. The two new incoming Frosh would not be ready in one month and it appears that don’t have the playing weight right now. IMO only.
If Duce had signed with us, that would have solved this potential problem.
Maybe we can cross train an OL much like we did with Karic.
We should be fine if the three bigs stay healthy however.
