Another reason to not drink and drive....

A problem with that is that those people simply aren't going to stop driving unless they are incarcerated. You can take their license, their insurance, their tags, their car, and they are still going to find a way to get on the road.

Until they kill someone, they are just "non-violent" offenders and "we can't be filling up the jails with non-violent offenders."

People would go batshit crazy over someone randomly firing a gun into houses whether he killed someone or not. Drunk drivers do essentially the same thing and all anyone wants to talk about are the Nazi cops cracking down on people just trying to have a good time.

I'm not condoning driving drunk, but it seems incongrous that when you make a mistake due to driving while eating your Big Mac or talking on your cell phone, the reaction is "tragic mistake, tsk, tsk," no punishment in most cases.
Aren't the victims just as dead?
Are there any stats on how many of the alcohol caused deaths are caused by social drinkers versus problem drinkers, i.e. alcoholics with multiple driving convictions? Just curious how big a problem this really is. I suppose that would be hard to determine, though.
