I am OK with some people thinking the program is “just OK”. That is a subjective term. By Texas standards it is fair enough. A top 20 program with 10 wins in the toughest conference around is certainly not bad. Most programs would love to have that kind of success, at Texas it is not enough to be satisfied.
I think the difference in what I see, vs those who are more concerned, is that I see a pretty darn good program with potential, that is consistently moving in the right direction. Others either do not believe the program is moving forward fast enough, or are concerned that it may not be progressing. I disagree, but that is fair enough. I enjoy the conversations about how the team could improve when it is about basketball, and not about how they “suck at crunch time.” The thing I cannot understand is how anyone could see this as the time to give up and start over.
Even if you don’t like where the program is now, it is obvious that there have been three consecutive seasons of progress. You can’t even say, IMO, that next year has to be a make or break year. It will be 2011-12 before Coach G has a full roster of her own recruits. After a couple of years with her own players and no progress it would be appropriate to start talking about these frustrations. You don’t put $1M a year into an investment in a coach only to pull the plug before giving them every chance to be successful.
In fact, you would have to start to wonder if two coaches with the experience, knowledge, and track record of Coach Conradt and Coach G both struggled to build championship teams at Texas. You would have to wonder if the problem was the coach or something else.
Don’t misunderstand me – I expect Coach G to be successful at Texas. I expect next year to bring a fourth straight year of positive progress. Still, I think I see something that she and the Texas program has to fight…….Make no mistake that A&M has a first class women’s basketball program, and a very talented team. Same at Baylor, OU, OKS and others in the Big 12. It is difficult to accept for us because we remember, not that far in the past, when all of those programs were not competitive. They remember too, and because they remember there is much more excitement about the current success. The same results at Texas would be considered just what was expected – as a minimum…….I think that excitement in the program is a huge part of what Texas fights in recruiting. That is why I would like to see the Erwin Center full of loud fans showing support for the players who committed four years to the University of Texas and play every game as hard and as well as they can……..well, that and because they deserve as much.
Winning is what everyone one wants. But, showing support for the commitment and effort of the current team does not mean you have to be satisfied. And, some excitement and support might go a long way toward getting some of those wins.
Lets fill the darn place up and make some noise.
