Another aggie Blowout

I am OK with some people thinking the program is “just OK”. That is a subjective term. By Texas standards it is fair enough. A top 20 program with 10 wins in the toughest conference around is certainly not bad. Most programs would love to have that kind of success, at Texas it is not enough to be satisfied.

I think the difference in what I see, vs those who are more concerned, is that I see a pretty darn good program with potential, that is consistently moving in the right direction. Others either do not believe the program is moving forward fast enough, or are concerned that it may not be progressing. I disagree, but that is fair enough. I enjoy the conversations about how the team could improve when it is about basketball, and not about how they “suck at crunch time.” The thing I cannot understand is how anyone could see this as the time to give up and start over.

Even if you don’t like where the program is now, it is obvious that there have been three consecutive seasons of progress. You can’t even say, IMO, that next year has to be a make or break year. It will be 2011-12 before Coach G has a full roster of her own recruits. After a couple of years with her own players and no progress it would be appropriate to start talking about these frustrations. You don’t put $1M a year into an investment in a coach only to pull the plug before giving them every chance to be successful.

In fact, you would have to start to wonder if two coaches with the experience, knowledge, and track record of Coach Conradt and Coach G both struggled to build championship teams at Texas. You would have to wonder if the problem was the coach or something else.

Don’t misunderstand me – I expect Coach G to be successful at Texas. I expect next year to bring a fourth straight year of positive progress. Still, I think I see something that she and the Texas program has to fight…….Make no mistake that A&M has a first class women’s basketball program, and a very talented team. Same at Baylor, OU, OKS and others in the Big 12. It is difficult to accept for us because we remember, not that far in the past, when all of those programs were not competitive. They remember too, and because they remember there is much more excitement about the current success. The same results at Texas would be considered just what was expected – as a minimum…….I think that excitement in the program is a huge part of what Texas fights in recruiting. That is why I would like to see the Erwin Center full of loud fans showing support for the players who committed four years to the University of Texas and play every game as hard and as well as they can……..well, that and because they deserve as much.

Winning is what everyone one wants. But, showing support for the commitment and effort of the current team does not mean you have to be satisfied. And, some excitement and support might go a long way toward getting some of those wins.

Lets fill the darn place up and make some noise.

At Texas it is not the losing. It is who you lose to. Historically, coaches who lose very often to A&M are not Texas coaches for long.

What's surprising is that basketball isn't the only support that the Horns are losing ground to A&M....soccer and softball are also falling behind. Used to be that UT women's sports was dominant. Now, not so much.

Seems funny to expect top flight results when the fanbases for other programs around the Big 12 are much more supportive of their teams. I find it telling that of all the websites I've seen (Baylorfans, texags, ou, and tt), it seems like this website has the least amount of fans, and from a historically sucessful program like Texas no less.

One more thing (pardon me I'm a little scatter brained), I actually want to see what they do in the tournament before I make any proclamations about this season. If the Big 12 is really that competitive I expect to see them perform well in the NCAA's.

BBV Horn,

Re: your post about my Kat statement above. I am not completely sure what point you're making. What is this about memory running short? Whose memory? I love for Erika to get a lot of minutes. She brings things AT doesn't (and vice versa, too). I love Erika's cool passes. Her rebounding and ball handling are mostly good. Free show shooting terrific. I think she's had a tough go of it, with her injuries and the huge expectations from high school. I don't agree with you about her shooting overall. I haven't looked up percentages, but I think she has mostly been in a shooting slump ever since high school, or her freshman year anyway. She did have the great shooting games against OSU this year and the one last year against ISU. But ya gotta admit, she throws up a whole lot of shots that don't go in. I'm with you on the rest. I love Erika's game and will miss her next year.

THERE ARE 4 KEYS THINGS MISSING FROM TEXAS

1. Point Guard- I luv AT game. But she is being forced into that position, which is taking away from her overall game.In order to even become ELITE you must have at least 1 point guard and then have the other ladys we have on the team to back her up in that position.

2. Pure Shooter - you must have 2 good outside shooters. We have 1 right now in Kat Nash. If we really had a point guard she would be deadly! EA just did not consistly give us good outside shooting. And a lot of times became a liability on defense. I have to keep it real, sense we are calling for Coach G head.

3. Guards - if you have really paid attention to the College games. Teams that are successful at a high level, have good guards. Gary Blair said that in his interview. Just look at some games this coming weekend and you will see what I am saying. I will give you a few to watch St. Johns, Georgetown,W.Virginia,Duke,Kentucky,Ohio St.Xavier
These teams guards give you speed, defense, smart decision making, mental toughness! Now I will say this. I lot of the fans are going to be surprise next year when you see the freshman guards. They going to be the type of guards that I am speaking on. Thank God!

4. Post/Center - now in this area I would have to have 4 players to rotate in theses position. Next year we will have that in place. And at the same time of having 4 players holding thoses 2 positions down. I like that all 4 of them will bring sum thing different to the table. C.Reed - powerful and demanding and position her self well to be given the ball, but the guards we have do not know how to get her the ball. And we really dont have that this year. A.Gayle- Shotblocker and plays well on defense. K.Nash- Bluecollar worker that fights and really is a good shooter from 15 on in. And then you have the player that I am really excited about A.Hartung- European style she play inside and outside.
Also we are heading in the right direction. Coach G is a good coach, and eventually everybody will be glad she is at Texas.Next year team I predict will be better then the team this year is.So just support them and success will come.Be you must be patient. Its like building a stadium which is in Arlington, it took years to build that and its a successful facility now

The level of idiocy on this thread is staggering. Coach G took a team that went 6-10 in the Big 12 3 years ago and missed the NCAAS for 2 consecutive years to 10-6 and 3 straight tournament appearances. TX has missed out on some key in state recruits but was always in the running despite the atrocious behavior of a former assistant coach who was part of those losing seasons. WCBB is much more competitive these days, and despite the fact that TX is no longer one of the few teams investing in women's athletics, we will compete for national titles soon! While execution is uneven, it is SUCH a pleasure to watch screens being set, sets on offense being run, seamless versatility on defense as opposed to endless years of man to man, no matter how easily the team was being taken off the dribble, and four years of offense that consisted of throw the ball to Tiffany Jackson and hope she was not triple teamed! The best possible hire was made three years ago - it is not like Pat or Geno were available. Aggie has our number for the moment, but it is very aggie to measure our success in terms of our games with them. Given our mediocre history over the last 20 years, Goestenkors is working miracles. The glass is way more half full than half empty. Calling for the head of the coach that saved the program from oblivion is unfathomable to me!

i posted about guard play earlier - but i want to touch on another area as well - jody and her staff has a huge class come in with 6 players and it just didn't pan out due to injuries, not adjusting to the college game etc - that class was ranked #1 at the time - had they or just some really panned out we wouldn't be in this position - so i do understand the mountain coach g has to climb, but i still think we should be more consistent and not look like a jr. hi team when pressed - when that big of a class comes in and doesn't work out, it takes longer to recover - that is correct clarissa has done us no favors in recruiting

I think the "Clarissa" factor is huge (in a negative way). I think it will just take a little time for Coach to overcome that and a few other obstacles. When that happens I think our recruiting will go through the roof. Those calling for coach G's job are just plain foolish. And that's a nice way of saying what I think of them!!!

I agree, Rexy, and for the record, L4UT, it was SEVEN freshmen in 2005, not 6....

I do think GG will be successful, but I also think she could adjust some of her play calling.....

GO Horns Beat SDSU!!

Has the "Clarissa factor" been discussed in another thread? Is there a means to search the forum?
I remember a different assistant coach (whose name has floated away) who went to Baylor and recruited for a couple of years but only remember some very very vague Clarissa flaming with no specifics.

mamaxaos,
You are thinking about Karen Aston-hired as head coach of UNC Charlotte on April 17, 2007 after one year at Baylor as associate head coach, a title she also held at Texas for the last six of the eight seasons she was at Texas. UNC Charlotte is hosting Gardner Webb tonight in the WNIT at 7 pm.

You can catch up with Coach Aston on her twitter.

An opinion and a question ----

Question: This is just for my own (and perhaps others') education. What did Clarrisa do that so many people are unhappy about? I've seen references to this before, but nobody will come out and say what it was. An interested fan wants to know.

Comment: I do not agree with those who say that Coach G wants a certain type of recruit and Coach C wanted another. They want (wanted) the same type, and the same type every other coach wants. Jody's incoming class that fateful year was thought by the "experts" to be the best recruiting class in the nation. Who knows why it didn't work out, other than a bunch of injuries, some bad luck, maybe some assessments that turned out to be off the mark. I take the recruiting assessment services with a grain of salt.

I have no idea what Clarissa "did" but I see posters 'in the know' mentioning some negative recruitment antics and I have no doubt their information is accurate. Specifics? I have none and doubt any will be divulged. I have often commented (verbally) that Texas is a 'good old girl' state and Coach G is not yet a good old girl. Heck, she is a Yankee, for crying out loud.

I think it will take her a bit of time to make inroads with the Texas high school coaches and I think she will and when some of those barriers are broken down, I see our recruiting going through the roof. Yes, in the past Gail has been able to cherry pick a few great Texas players, but that is different than year end and year out getting the best Texas has to offer.
