Another aggie Blowout

Very sad. Coach G is 0 for 7 against the Ags. Feel sorry for the seniors who have never had the feeling of beating the Ags.

I don't expect the Horns to go far in the Big Dance. They'll be lucky to get past the 2nd round.

*sigh*

I just don't understand this team. They are so inconsistent. What's wrong...attitude, chemistry, coaching, desire? Are these players just not that good and no amount of teaching and coaching will result in anything but mediocrity? We know GG is a good coach as she has proven that before she came to UT. Is this team just 2-3 good players away from being really good? I sure hope so for Coach's sake and for the fans who have supported them the last few years. It's really frustrating.

I really like Coach G, but I've got to admit that I expected a quicker turnaround when we hired her. This is the end of her third year and we're still just middle of the pack in the Big 12. She hasn't recruited quite as well as I thought she would, by now.

It seems that the aggies (and others) are dominating us in most of the women's sports, aside from volleyball. Perhaps it's time for Chris Plonsky to be called to account for what can only be termed a serious underachievement in women's athletics.

I really thought Coach G would have Texas playing for championships by now. We're mediocre and I don't see a whole lot of reason to think things will change next year. We don't do anything particularly well--certainly not consistently. We're good at defense sometimes, good at hitting three pointers sometimes, not not really good at anything all the time. I guess that's why I coach from the stands because I don't have the answers

I didn't think Coach G would have the program turned around this quickly. She needs to get the type of players that she wants in her system. The recruiting battle is being won by the ags and bears since they have been so successful in recent years. I'm not ready to give up on Coach G just yet.

It will be interesting to see how Texas when/if extends Coach G's contract. I cannot see Texas justify spending $1 million a year for the results that we're seeing. Year 4 is going to be a make it or break it type year for Coach G and staff.

It's really frustrating to see where the Texas program currently stands. Texas has NEVER been a challenge to the Big 12 regular season or tournament since Coach G took over.

Duke's Coach P was able to flourish in her 3rd year; granted, she inherited a full cup board of excellent players. How is it that Coach P is able to succeed? You could argue the ACC is not nearly as strong as the Big XII, but the fact remains that we've not seen the progress from Coach Conradt's final season up until now.

I'm about to jump off the Coach G train... really don't want to as I'm been following this program more closely ever since she came on board to UT. And I really really do like and respect Coach G.

mediocre? Wow! People, get a life. We're in the top 20, we finished tied for fourth in the league. We improved every year Coach G has been here. yeah, aggie has our number. Now that is a pain in the butt. They do seem to have a hex on us.

Yeah, it's a sorry way to end the team's stay at KC. But the NCAAs start next week and I sure hope the team is not thinking so negatively. aggie and UConn are two teams that we don't match up well with. But the team is better this year than last and I expect them to have an excellent shot at winning both games in Austin. The big problem is that most projections have the Austin winner meeting up with UConn in the Sweet 16. I don't expect anyone to beat UConn this year unless Moore and/or Charles is injured and can't play.

I think this team is very close to being very, very good. They have not been consistent. But, most basketball teams are not consistent. No one complains about the consistency of teams that win most of their games, but if you watch they do not always play at the same level. They just have more overall talent and are able to overcome mistakes more easily. This Texas team, IMO, plays just about as well as they are able. They have some very hard working and committed players. I think the coaches get as much as possible from them. But, they still have some holes. The streak of losing against A&M, I think, is just a matter of running into a team that they do not match up well against. There is great promise, but still issues at the post. AG is one of the best defensive posts in the country. She just needs to spend an off-season working on her offensive skills. Cokie Reed has the ability to be dominant. But, she is a freshman. In the context of her experience she has had a very good year. At guard they have a lack of depth and experience in players who can handle the type pressure and pace that a team like A&M forces. Pure speed, quickness, and athleticism are not something that you can coach. AT and Yvonne show promise, but they cannot carry that burden alone. Brittainey has some great basketball skills, but one of those has really never been handling pressure defense. The coaches are still developing skills at the point and in the post…..probably the two most important pieces of any team. They are doing that with sophomores and freshmen. I don’t think it is unreasonable to believe that, at this point, a team that wins 10 games in the most difficult conference in the country has done pretty well. I think anyone who believes that recruiting would be easy for Coach G just hasn’t paid attention to what was going on with women’s basketball in Texas before her arrival. This is a hard job in a hard conference. A complete turnaround will not happen overnight. But, there has been progress. With only one exception they won every game in which they were a clear favorite. The lost to #1, #3, #4, #11 (3), #12, #14, and #20 with the only bad loss early to USC. We have seen Texas teams in the recent past who often lost games which they clearly should have won. They also have wins over #12, #16 (2), and #20. Yes they lost a number of games to teams ranked 1-11. But, I don’t think anyone believes this team has top 10 talent yet. Take away those games and they are 4-3 vs the remainder of the top 25. That seems about where they should be and that is what the record shows. It would have been nice to have a big win in there somewhere. But, that wouldn’t make them any better than they are. They played Nebraska close until late in the game. They lost a road game to OKS in OT, and let another one get away in OT against Iowa State. They were that close to a 12 win conference season. I just don’t think any of this is cause to push the panic button or start considering the hiring of Coach G to be a failure. I see progress and I see potential. Texas fans are historically impatient. I understand. But, this ship is headed in the right direction. We have players and coaches are appear to be committed to staying the course until the journey is finished………It would be really nice if we could fill the stupid Erwin Center with a bunch of loud, supportive fans so that the prospective recruits I see sitting near me could feel a little excitement when they visit, instead of so many people waiting for Coach G to first wave a magic wand.

Just my opinion.

Ditto on the post Outlook.

Let's show the team some support. I think they can win the two games in Austin!

Let's give the women the support they need instead of tearing them and the coaching staff down.

Go Horns!

We had more than 25 turnovers, We went 9 minutes in the second half where today nobody but AT scored. Free throw shooting, a basic skill, was awful again today. Say what you will and quote the season stats, this team just sucks at crunch time.

I love all these kids, but they can't execute the game basics when the chips are down. I blame the coach for this failure.

Sent an email to Chris Plonsky tonight saying a change is needed.

The team averages 17 TOs a game, they force 16. And that's counting those two god awful games against a&m. Those averages in conference play. Normally, they do a good job of protecting the ball, and forceing TOs. They make 70% of FTs in conference play, not much off the 63% they hit today. It's a bad matchup, pretty simple. The team does fine against pretty much everyone else. You should ask aggie what they think about losing to Baylor twice this season.

Really? Are we here again? Will some Texas fans ever be satisfied with less than National Dominance every year? I'm glad we have such a successful team. Remember three years in a row of not going to the NCAA tournament? Have you notice that Coach G's win perecentage in a tough conference has gone up every year she's been here? C'mon. Have a clue. Let the woman do the great job she's here to do. Get your butts in the seats and recruits will think more favorably about Texas.

Driftwood,

So, before the best season in years is even finished, already with 22 wins while playing the 10th most difficult schedule in the country, with 10 wins in the toughest conference in the country, after three years of continually improving results, you are writing to the athletic department demanding change? What exactly are your expectations?

We went 9 minutes when all the points were scored by one player? At times it seemed like we went entire halves when the only player who scored was Edwina Brown. I hope AT comes close to being that type player for UT….Seriously, this team had more balanced scoring than any Texas team I can remember. Don’t pull a few minutes out of one game to start your argument.

When the chips are down? The most disappointing losses this year where when they let leads get away, not failing to respond to adversity. Seven of ten losses have been by double digits. That is getting beat, and nothing to brag about. But it is not a crunch time problem. If you want to complain, more power to you. You could argue that there are areas in which this team could improve. But, please be more specific than “sucks at crunch time”, or “can’t execute game basics”. I think that you need to bring a little more to the table if you want your email to be taken seriously in the athletic department.

You blame the coach because they didn’t make enough free throws for you? What do you suggest? What coaching change would correct that issue? Should Coach G run on the court and shoot for them? I know this is college athletics. But, at some point the players have to take responsibility for how they perform. I don’t think changing coaches would automatically make them better free throw shooters. Interestingly, Texas had a better conference free throw shooting percentage than A&M. Maybe they should make less.

These remarks represent my opinion. I'm not trying to "tear down out team." It's just how I see it. I guess I'm not the patient optimist that Babhorn and many others are. Our team is pretty good, but that's as far as it goes. We have some nice pieces, but usually only a few pieces are working at the same time. I had a lot of frustrations about today's game. Why did Coach G abandon the zone which worked so well in the second part of the first half? As desperately as we want to get it inside and the coach is pressuring you to go there, you can't just throw in a lob with two or three white shirts right in the way. I didn't count, but we must have had 6 or more throwaways from those forced lobs. And, the most profound problem of all -- we don't have any pure shooters, except Kat, who didn't have a good day. Confidence has a lot to do with it, but it's also just flat out ability, more than likely something you are born with or get from playing basketball from about age 3. I like Coach G, but I think the university and most fans were expecting more from the million $ a year splurge. There are many great coaches in this country, including several fantastic ones here in this counference. It's recruiting that make the difference. Recruting has not been a blow-out disaster, but has been a disappointment. I don't blame Gail for that. I know she's trying, but who knows why one school gets popular wiith players and another doesn't? In the meantime, I guess I'll just try to enjoy the team as it is, and not have super-high expectations.

Everyone has some valid points, but there are some issues with this team that DO need to be corrected if we want to get further ahead in our quest for success.
There ARE some basketball basics that some
of the players don't seem to know....sharp, crisp, accurate passes, the ability to know what the plays are and execute them, setting good screens, and not "movng" ones, just basketball basics. Also critical is the mentality to not play scared....A&M smacked us in the mouth (literally Colson to AT) and we didn't have any player (should be a senior) that was on the floor who could say "Let's smack 'em back, we are not taking this **** anymore!!"....AT was about the only true aggressor today, a lot of the others looked like Bambi in the headlights...scared, unsure.

That is NOT because they are young...look at some of the other young teams....they just have more confidence, and will not back down....when they get pushed around, they push back....
We need a TEAM, not a bunch of individual players who are not playing together very well....

That being said, we have had a winning season, so that's looking at the glass half full....and when GG has ALL her own recruits, we can see what happens....I am hoping it will be great, I WANT to see Gail succeed....

we have no high level guards and without consistent guard play, success will be average or a liitle above and that is where we are - i laugh at how we all need to be supportive and yada, yada, yada, - i'm very supportive of the program and always have been - but i'm a realist as well - we are not progressing very well in any phase - recruiting being number 1 - which is my biggest surprise given coach g's rep and knowledge - take off the burnt orange glasses -we are not very good -too many lopsided losses and too many home losses - we still look like a jr hi team when pressure is applied, this is bothersome because i can't see it improving - this is coach g's third season and as i have stated on this board before i just want to see consistency with the promise of getting better - i'm not sure we are seeing it - next year is coach g's 4th already progress should be seen by now - does her style not fit the physical play of the big 12? - something is not right

Great points L4. Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels that same way. We can't even be competitive in challenging for the Big 12 regular season or championship tournament. To continually justify and rationalize the results of the past 3 seasons are symptoms of denial IMHO. Should the next 2 seasons produce the same results, I wonder how UT is going to justify continuing to pay $1 million for those kinds of results.

For those that consider us critical of Coach G as "haters", here's the results from Sherri Coale's first 5 years of coaching Oklahoma:
1996-1997: 5-22 (1-15 Big 12)
1997-1998: 8-19 (4-12)
1998-1999: 15-14 (8-8)
1999-2000: 25-8 (13-3)
2000-2001 28-6 (15-1)

It wasn't until her 4th year did Sherri break out with consistently good teams CHALLENGING for championships, with a appearance as runner up in the National Championship in 2001-2002.

Next year will be telling for sure.

I still haven't heard from anyone as to why Duke's Coach McCallie is able to attain success in just her 3rd year.

Tiffany Moore and Chealsea Bass are the type of guards that would fit right in at A&M. They will help in matching that guard play. Ashleigh is doing well but this is really her first year in playing PG. It's a pretty steep learning curve she is going through.

definitely a steep learning curve going to the PG position. AT is one of my favorite players, and i think she fits into Coach G's system and playing style very well. i just think she's much more effective and comfortable at the 2-guard. i'm excited about the guards coming in next season....especially since they all seem to be guards that can score and attack the basket.
