Andre Jones

If Mack buys that it really was the other Dre who was hanging around Henry and Joseph and matched the original description, then Andre might have a chance.

The sanctimony on this thread is pretty disturbing. On the positive side, it's good to see that most on this thread have never made a mistake.

I stated he should ask for a second chance. If his peers agree to it then so be it. That would eliminate public option on how to deal with a young mans life.

Yes because like drinking and driving most of us have committed or been accused of felonies. It is all just part of growing up.

Look, I know Dre. I like Dre, a lot. As weird as it will sound, he is a great young man, this is true when people say it. This guy is NIOT a felon through and through. It was deflating when it all went down. I think it is best for him and the team to not even try to ask for a second chance on this. He should transfer somewhere to get a fresh start, new people and new expectations without baggage lingering about. In the long run he would be better off, imho.

I don't know if he is taking Summer II classes right now but if so, finish up but transfer. Or, drop out of 'em and transfer now to get accustomed to somewhere else.

If he wants to get back on the team he should complete the community service plus extra community activities and go to acc for a year and prove he deserves a second chance.

His chances of getting back on the team are about the same as me banging Anna Kournikova and Jessica Alba at the same with my wife's full blessing.

In all seriousness, as a former prosecutor of 13+years and now a defense attorney, I have offered deferred adjudication in many cases, usually involving a young defendant who had a chance to turn it around and be a productive citizen. I viewed it as a double-edged sword. Get it right and you have no conviction after x number of years. Get it wrong and f*** it up, be prepared to bend over. I always felt it left the ultimate fate in the defendant's hands, and if they could still not get it right with that big of a hammer hanging over their heads, they deserved a big pen sentence and our judges agreed. It is truly sink or swim time for Andre.

No need to trash the guy, and I am pretty sure everyone here hopes he gets his life back together and goes on to be a productive human being, whether in football or some other area. Personally I like to think our team is better than some of the others who will welcome trash just because they have talent at football. Maybe I'm dreaming and maybe "dre" isn't really guilty, but I would rather him move on and play somewhere else. Give someone else a chance, preferably someone who hasn't plead guilty to B&E with a weapon (or robbery or whatever it was). I would rather it even if he gives us the best chance to win. I'll still ***** if we lose, but I can at least know we didn't comproise our standards.

Conviction of any sort of violent crime should result in termination of your scholarship.

As XL says, I don't wish ill on Dre. I sincerely hope the kid turns his life around and becomes a productive citizen. But, given our recent history, we don't need any convicted armed robbers on our roster. It just aint worth it.

When Joe Jamail proves that Andre Jones is innocent and Frank Denius picks up the tab, I'll be the first on this board to apologize that I doubted the kid. Yes, this is an Austin180 sarcastic comment.

hornFANtastic or any other criminal attorneys out there,

On these deferred adjudication deals, what type of screw-up constitutes a violation of the probation? Is it something as insignificant as a traffic ticket or a Class C misdemeanor, or what? How thin of a line does this kid have to walk for the next decade?

I've never bought into the "kids will be kids" argument for a lot of the players that come to town and get into trouble.

When you're in your late teens, you know that robbing someone is a crime, a felony crime. You might rob someone for "kicks"...but you know that's a crime.

If you compound a crime by stonewalling, repeatedly not telling the truth or owning up to the action, especially to people who can help you, you make matters worse.

I'm not judging whether or not, at heart, Jones is a "good" person. I'm looking objectively at his actions, and objectively, he needs to move on, take advantage of a second chance somewhere else, if it's offered. UT needs to move on, and has. Jones' future is not in Austin, because of his past actions here.

To the person asking about the nature of violations, It depends on the prosecutor screeening the case and the judge. Technically, he if violates even one rule like missing one reporting date, the judge has full power to find he has violated probation and proceed to adjudicate him and send him away for the max. In most scenarios, it takes something significant, like committing a new crime, failing drug tests or not reporting for months before a judge will sentence for the max.

I used to view it like a term paper. Give an A- or B+ effort and you may get some slack, but turn in a D or F effort and its over Rover.

From my experiences, it is usually an all or nothing deal. The person usually turns it around or goes off the deep end. There are exceptions, but most either get serious about it or blow probation off with disasterous results. Time will tell in this case.

Bob,, thanks for the laugh. I had never heard that term, but it is probably true in a majority of cases. Sad but true.

I also don't buy the not being able to afford a lawyer. This is also why I don't think he should stay in Austin, nor do I think he will.

I don't know if he is in school for Summer II. I was thinking that if he was going to move on to another school he could drop summer II here and quickly enroll there to get his feet wet there. He could also then begin relationships with the coaches and set up a routine for when the Fall semester started. I was not suggesting him just dropping out of school now that the verdict has been reached. That would truly be stupid.

Lost in the discussions seems to be James Henry. I am not so sure things will end up so well for him either or that he stays out of trouble. It is a gamble either way. Best of luck to ya.
