I live near one of those "miserable cities" and I have a fantastic quality of life. Being poor and being in one of those cities would be horrendous. But having a good income, an enjoyable job, and a good family life makes location a little less relevant to me.

I have lived in some of the best cities (Austin), and some of the worst, and my quality of life hasn't changed much from place to place.

none of you ******* people have mentioned Bryan/College F'n Station. can I at least get someone to agree it's the shittiest place in the state?

Yeah, there's traffic. But the worst rush hours I've ever seen were in Phoenix, Atlanta, and Houston.

you should try LA...and it could be anytime of the day.

I've been blessed enough to live in Philly, Detroit, and Flint. Philly is the biggest craphole I've ever lived in and it isn't even close. What a miserable, depressing place and the people make it that much worse. Detroit was a pleasant surprise, at least the northern suburbs were, and they've made a lot of progress since the Super Bowl. It's just too bad their mayor is a scumbag. Flint is a small, decaying city that is completely void of any big city amenities such as dining, sports, entertainment, etc.

Jive's Shaq analogy is pretty brilliant. Anyone who thinks you can do what you can do in NY/LA/Chicago in any medium sized city has not spent that much time with a decent income in those cities. There's a lot more to life than Olive Garden and what's playing at the local AMC.

they would've caught too much hell for putting new orleans on the list. actually, looking back at the criteria (min 370k people)...have that many people moved back?

I live in Philly, and have for the last year and one-half. It's the trashiest place I've ever seen - litter everywhere. People routinely throw their trash on the ground. And the people are hard to take - unfriendly and abrasive. Murders occur routinely. Taxes are outrageous. Government is corrupt. The town is run by unions. In other words, it kind of sucks. Look forward to returning to Texas in the next year or two.

What could be worse than Philly? That little burg directly across the Delaware River known as Camden, New Jersey. That place scares the crap out of me. I don't even feel like I'm in the U.S. when I'm there, it's so lawless and third-world.

I went to Penn and suffered through 4 years of Philly. Terrible ******** when I was there. I have heard it has improved but that is like putting lipstick on a pig.

The Detroit area is much more preferable than Philly. The northern suburbs are nice, there are 3 downtown casinos, and Windsor and its strip clubs and bars are across the river.

Well said Ahab, I was kind of being an internet dick. I felt it was my role, since Midtown has either been rehabilitated or is on strike. I was responding to someone above who said that the same movies come to NY as any mid size city, so there's really no difference. I absolutely agree with your thesis, your misery or happiness is more inside you than around you.
