American Beauty (the Movie)

Yeah, I watched most of it last week. Hadn't seen it since it was first released. I actually didn't like the movie that much the first time I saw it--seemed way too contrived for my taste. I liked it more this time around...and really appreciated Spacey's performance more than before.

I still don't rank it as one of my favorites...but good.

No.......explaining to your kids that you rode your bike to the theater to see "Grease" 8 times during the Summer of '78 makes you feel old.

Realizing that American Beauty was released in 1999 just makes you realize how time if flyin' by, just like my Old Man said it would!

I saw Grease a bunch of times as well just to see the last song with Olivia wearing that outfit.

Star Wars well over 20 times at the theater.

Oh, and American Beauty is one of my favorites of the last 10 years or so.

Chris Cooper gave a great performance that could have really turned bad with a lesser actor.

i had a big crush on thora boobs... i mean birch. i saw this movie at the dobie theater during SXSW when i was 16. my 19 year old friend got carded at the door but I didn't.

my first definition of Old:

hearing something happened 20 years ago and you immediately remember where you were when it happened (Challenger)

my second definition of old (and I havent hit this yet), is asking for the age of a loan applicant, and their birth year is your H.S. graduation year (or later).

my third definition of old is hearing about a famous child star who was just a little bit older than you, dying of normal age-related complications

Mr. Smiley's Counter Girl: Whoa! You are so busted.
Carolyn Burnham: You know, this really doesn't concern you.
Lester Burnham: Well, actually, Janine is Senior Drive-thru Manager so you are on her turf.

CLASSIC!

I just can't stand musicals in general. The whole "everyone starts singing a song for no reason" thing just makes them really hard for me to sit through.

Uncle Rico made me laugh.

I'm in the baffled-by-the-popularity-of-Grease crowd. Its unwatchable for me. I also think too much of American Beauty is contrived although I enjoyed the performance of Kevin Spacey.

Roma (don't know how old you are) -- back in '78, Grease had the same "vibe" that High School Musical had over the past few years. However, back then, the one and only place you could see it was the movie theater, which sort of added to the aura of it.

Maybe you were a teenager or preteen back then, and just didn't care for it......but for whatever reason.....the music, the cigarette smokin' sex havin' high schoolers, whatever it was....it was quite the phenomenon. At least where I lived it was.

I agree with most of the comments on American Beauty --- certainly far from one of my favorite movies, and I actually hated it the first time I saw it. Now that is shown on the movie channels, I enjoy watching it in bits-and-pieces.

I generally hate musicals as well, but the Sound of Music is badass. They just don't break into song at odd times. This **** actually fits. Watch it every time it comes on TV.

Sound of Music = Awesome movie. I went to this crazy gutter punk type party up in Denton once and these kids were blaring the vinyl album soundtrack. It didnt make sense at the time, but I now realize that the Sound of Music is timeless and reaches out to all walks of life.

MirrOlure,

I'm old. I came to UT with Earl Campbell in 1974. No doubt that Grease was a sensation and that most people around my age or a little younger generally view it fondly. It just left me cold, probably my loss.

Rocky Balboa,

I can't speak for eveyone using "contrived," but I feel that it has been used aptly in this thread. Merriam Webster says:
