AJ Will Declare

wtf.gif

Wow, I saw him earlier today and this did not come up in discussion. I wish I knew about this article to bring it up. Then again, I am sure that everybody else was so maybe it is best that I did not. And DJ is struggling with it all. You can see it in his face. Austin is a magical place that can make it tough. But he has to do what is right for him. Hopefully it is to stay in Austin one more year. Same with AJ.

Test the waters means nothing . I am sure all he is doing is trying to get his name out there a little more so that when he goes at the end of next year he has a little better shot at getting drafted.

Not a bad move by AJ for reasons outlined above.

I love this team and wish all the best for each player. The options DJ is considering make his decision a particularly difficult one. I will be happy for him whatever he decides
(though ecstactic for Hornfans if he returns!)

If you're a Jr, why not declare and check out the NBA camps, as long as you can hold your own. You get some attention in front of the scouts and then you return for your Sr year. and if you impress the scouts enough, you can head for the draft.

This is a smart move by AJ. He can get his name out there and learn how to impress the scouts for next year.

If he thinks he actually has a good chance of getting drafted this year he should think again.

some people who know more have said this is simple and may not turn out well for numerous reason...even if he comes back

also, who knows if he even gets invited to the camps...

Being the eternal optomist, this may mean that DJ is really leaning toward staying. AJ's dad says that AJ needs to play point guard (at Texas) next year, because that's what the scouts are telling him is his ONLY chance to make it in the NBA. If Brown qualifies (which I expect), & if DJ stays (which I hope), AJ would probably also lose his starting spot, which is probably what the above reference is about. (not good even if he returns). Also, that would obviously derail any chance of PG time next year. In reality I don't think there is any chance even if DJ leaves because Balbay is a badass & so is JB if Barnes decides to use him at point. Getting his name out there might be good, but I fully expect him to be on next years team, hopefully as 6th man.

Texas junior guard A.J. Abrams will enter this year's NBA Draft without an agent, his father, Andy, said Wednesday.

"It's a business thing for A.J.," Andy Abrams said. "He needs to get his name out there a little more on the national scene - more than he did this last season and this is a way for him to do it.

"This is not a probing thing for him. He's serious about it. Without the national exposure that some other folks are getting, he's going to have to take some steps on his own to see if he can do that because it is a goal of his to play in the NBA."

Andy Abrams said he would love for A.J. to play point guard next season at Texas if A.J. returns to Texas and D.J. Augustin leaves early for the NBA. Augustin, a sophomore, has until April 27 to decide if he will enter the NBA Draft.

"It's going to be in A.J.'s best interest from a personal standpoint if he plays point guard next season because that's what everyone in the league is saying that they need to see him do," Andy Abrams said.

I highly highly doubt 1/2 of what many considered the best backcourt tandem in the nation will lose his starting job next season.

when PJ was here, i thought the movement of him to the perimeter had more to do with PJ's development than the team's. this is a catch 22 for coaches, b/c they want to be able show how they develop these kids towards their pro potential. now moving Damion i can sort of see, although he is very serviceable at the PF in college. PJ though was a true college PF.

so, if DJ goes, does this leave us with AJ being the primary PG to help develop his sliver of a pro chance? now i realize he'll help run things to some degree next year and he may well do a solid job of it during his sr year (see KP), but i'm still now sure this isn't forcing a sq peg in a round hole.

i know RB loves AJ and believes in him (maybe to a fault).

now, based on this past year, we saw mason at the PG more than AJ, but i think that had more to do with trying to have both AJ and DJ running off screens and shooting than it did with mason's ability as PG, which is serviceable.

i'm rambling here...so what do you guys think of coaches moving these guys "down" in position to fit their pro "size" instead of what their skill set really is.

If A.J. wants to play PG here next year, well, we can do just fine with a backcourt of Balbay, Brown, and Mason.

I love AJ and appreciate all that he has done as a longhorn, but I just don't see him playing in the NBA. 5'11" guys that weigh 160 pounds (not named TJ) just don't stand much of a chance. Guess there is nothing wrong with him testing the waters, but I expect he'll get a similar assessment from the scouts.

My guess is he'll be back next year to finish a helluva a career, then head off to Europe where he may have a very successful career.

They tried to move Tucker and it didn't work out. He is a power forward trapped in a wings body. Damion is capable of playing on the perimeter and has had success doing so. Their situations aren't the same. I'm sure AJ will get a chance to play some point, but if he can't handle it he's not going to stay there because Mason and Balbay are more than capable. I'm not really confident about it unless his ball handling improves a lot. Bottom line is that Barnes will play a guy at their nba position if they can handle it and it works for the team.
