Aggies and the 'MNC'

The Ags were MNC in 1939. To me, the big determinant on past MNC is whether a team was considered a MNC at the time. The Ags were considered the MNC at the time.

Now, this 1918 MNC they keep trying to claim- baloney. Nobody in the nation thought a SWC team was good enough to be considered for a MNC until the '30s.

If USC was such an obvious national champion in 1939, why did they only start claiming that championship a couple years ago?
