As most of you know, the aggies hold their fish camp at Lakeview Methodist Encampment in Anderson County. This is where thousands of freshmen aggies come in for orientation. They scream, hollar and act like hooligans for days. It is one of those stupid rituals that only aggies can do well.
Anderson County is my home and in today's Palestine paper is a story of aggie counselor critically injured from falling off a golf cart at 1 am this morning. His name is Michael Schmidt from Victoria. He was brought unconcious to Palestine and transferred to Tyler in critical condition. In paper, is information from sheriff's report. The investigating officer interviewed witnesses to the accident and officer doesn't believe alcohol was involved.
Sherylon Carroll, a deputy director of aggie public relations acknowledged aggie officals were aware of accident but had little information on the event. However, a few paragraphs later she says it is not unusal for counselors to be patrolling and preparing for next day's work at 1 am in morning.
First , my prayers go out to this young man and his family. The injury appears to be life threatning.....
I have heard from good sources at fish camp that each year there are many, many injuries from all of the carrying on that takes place. Stiches, sprains, contusions, and a few broken bones are common but you never hear about it.
With over 4000 students going through in 6 sessions over 6 weeks, I am just curious as to how many suffer injuries in the name of upholding another stupid aggie tradition.
I will try to have more information tomorrow.......
