Affirmative Action on its way out?

Whether we like it or not, the athletic department funds too much of the school's budget to begin the holier-than-thou path. Especially at Texas.

You do know that coaches have bonuses built into contracts about players graduating.

You also know that the NCAA grades and could penalize schools for not graduating athletes, right?

They are not going to recruit too many players that will not try and get their degrees in 5 years.

Even the basketball players that have been leaving early for the NBA are coming back and trying to get their degree's.

I don't believe Athletic admissions are an issue at Texas.

You say A&M does not use race as a factor

I am confused
what does this mean
from the Ag website
"Texas A&M University is an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity institution and affirms its dedication to non-discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, domestic partner status, national origin, or disability in employment, programs, and services. Our commitment to non-discrimination and affirmative action embraces the entire university community including faculty, staff, and students."

and then thre is this which reports on a letter sent by Loftin in support of AA to ' increase the representation of minority groups.

the petition for AA among athletes is funny

I think there are exceptioins made for athletes and they get alot more help then a normal student would from the University, I don't deny that.

I will say that the kids recruited are kids that could graduate or have a great chance to graduate. I think that has changed dramatically in the past 20-30 years.

I don't really think the student athlete is a good analogy to the AA situation of normal everyday kids applying for admission.

i understand your point Mich and even kinda agree
BUT an athlete does not take a spot from non athletes
and if another athlete is More deserving he will get the spot which will have nothing to do with SAT.

But I do get what you are saying

I really dont see a problem with a small proportion of an admitting class set aside for special talent students such as the world class musician, opera singer, entrepeneur, author or athlete without regard to race.

If we set Freshman admission at 8,000, 300 admissions should be set aside for special admission. This group would include the examples above, foriegn students and out of state students. Out of state students should be restricted to National merit scholars only and students with family ties to Texas(relatives living in Texas that pay taxes in Texas).
300, that is it. Berkley Powers can arrange how to admit the 300 under any scheme that he, two monkeys and a rock can come up with. I assume that was the system used to come up with the present "Holistic Matrix".

The other 7,700 should be admitted from the population of the State of Texas.
1. 1800 Sat score qualifier for applicants.
2. Start with acceptance of the top 1% of the high school graduates, then top 2% etc , until 7,700 have been admitted.
3. If 7,700 is not achieved after reaching the top 25% of high school graduates, then lower the Sat Qualifier to 1750 and start over with the top 1%. Continue tho drop the qualifer by 50 for the top 25% until 7,700 admissions are achieved.
This process will assure the largest majority of hard working, intellegent high school graduates FROM TEXAS will get admitted.

The SAT is so over-rated. I think I have the all time lowest SAT score with a degree from the University of Texas. It is an indicator of absolutely nothing.

Now granted my admission to Texas was that I only had to score on the SAT so my motivation was lower than most!

It is simple. Any socioeconomic factor used to give preference must be a very objective and specific disadvantage. Race no longer qualifies. Poverty probably does.
