Abrams

Gibson is bigger than AJ and more athletic. Also, it's not like daniel is learning how to be a point in cleveland, which was his reason for leaving. He's an undersized shooter playing off LeBron.

Who is encouraging the young man to go pro from these boards? I wish he would stay but I doubt he does. But some speculate he is getting bad info, blah blah, but that is not the case. Again, speculation...but maybe he just flat out does not want to come back here. That anywhere is where he would be, not here. Not for your reasons, his. That is, if this is the case.

I can see where it looks lie he is getting bad advice. It certainly does not look like he is making an objective evaluation of where he stands.

That said, I wish him good luck. He was a helluva shooter for us.

Daniel Gibson: 6'2, 190
A.J. Abrams: 5'11, 155

Gibson is a better defender and is also much better at attacking the basket. He is also a better athlete. I have seen some decent dunks out of Gibson. Abrams - not so much.

After all that, Gibson is still a comparable shooter.

I understand that it is not an apples to apples comparison, and I wasn't trying to make one. But the point of my comment was to highlight the fact that all of our internet speculation does not amount to a hill of beans when compared to the unknown reality of how a situation will play out.

This isn't meant to be a shot at A.J., by any means. But I miss when college basketball was an end unto itself.

Like, you went to a school to win a national championship, you played four years, and if the NBA came calling, that was icing.

Even during the last decade, when people began going early to pros, I could accept it -- because even then, it was only an elite few.

But now, when even the likes of A.J. Abrams and P.J. Tucker are leaving early, well ... I miss the old days.

You know, AJ has put a lot into this program. I'm not a big fan of "one and done", but getting worked up about a kid making a play for the NBA when he only has a year of eligibility left seems selfish. I don't really see the need to second guess AJ or his motivations.

Bob, my thoughts exactly. It's the "I want to show you how well I dribble and dish, but only with a bunch of chairs on the floor" scenario. I don't get it.

If Abrams is really trying to land with an NBA team, he has to realize he has to show what he can do in competition. If he is just trying to get some feelers out and get advice about what he needs to do to improve his game, he still has to play against competition.

I also don't understand the following comment--

In reply to:

He's just in a bad spot.

Didn't make the camp, which means broadly there is no interest. Therefore, he's unlikely to get any workout invitations, because even if he were not the primary target, what does another guard have to prove by shooting over him?

That leaves the NBDL or overseas, and with limited slots for Americans, the foreign teams can find their own short guys who can bomb from long range.

So, if it's the NBDL or UT, I think he's better off at UT, but if he doesn't, then so it goes.

Get your degree from one of the best universities in the world and then make $200 grand a year as a 22 year old while living in Europe. Not a bad life if you ask me.

I think the degree is the important thing here...he needs to get that. And I find it hard to believe his parents arent pushing this harder.

But I do not buy this BS that 1 more year at UT is going to propel him in the draft, or change his game dramatically. AJ is what he is...a great shooter, set up and on the move. That isnt going to change in 30 more games.

I hope he comes back, but he doesnt NEED to.

Look, I love AJ. I have defended him to a fault at times over his career. I have known the kid a long time. He's a great kid and has been a really good player at UT for 3 years. BUT, the kid is not going to make millions playing overseas. It will be hard for him to even find a team to stick with for a long time over there. And as I stated before, the overseas lifestyle is not for everybody.

Actually, overmaars, your tense is wrong. Having already used the future tense as a condition for Abrams being on campus, you had to place his enrollment prior to his being on campus. That is, you should have said, "will find Abrams . . . matriculated (enrolled)", not "will find Abrams . . . matriculating (enrolling)." What you said had the literal meaning of his being on campus and enrolling for future studies.

But back to more important issues, does anyone know if Abrams stuck around on campus in April and May, attended classes, and maintained eligibility?

Is there a time limit on getting your degree I'm not aware of? Can Abrams not complete his degree requirements after giving pro basketball a shot?

The people acting like HE HAS TO COME BACK NEXT YEAR TO GET HIS DEGREE OMG! are ridiculous. The kid has a dream. We pretty much all agree on the likelihood of the dream coming true. But he doesn't owe us anything and he can finish his degree requirements 3 years from now, 5 years from now, or 10 years from now.

Good luck to the young man, no matter what he decides.

If he were to go play in Europe or the D leagues, I could see him back first chance in a few months to work on his degree. I could even see him do ome distance classes if there are any left that could be done that way. I would be shocked if he did not have his degree in 2 to 3 years time max if he were to go play ball somewhere other than Texas.

I do hope he stays.

Actually, your argument that he will never be NBA material makes it an even better decision to go pro now. The only reason he should stay in school would be if it makes a higher initial contract more likely.

Otherwise his choice is between making money starting this year or waiting a year to start making money. Nobody in their right mind would wait a year to start making money if they could start making the same money now. The only time you hear anyone argue for that tactic is when they want to see a player stay and play another year for their alma mater.
