A&M's DL dilemma

I have been out of town. 4 people who come on this BBS told me to find this post. I looked, I found and I laughed!

Great post Scipio! And even the sweeter that it is true!

Hook EM!

HTown:

I think you missed a critical part of the point Scipio was making.

The problem is not that RC has failed to recruit some good DL. The problem cip identifies is that after this year, aTm has NO natural noseguards. And it is having a real problem identifying and recruiting any. Part of that problem is, of courase, that there is not much demand for NGs in the pros. A NG plays in relative obscurity because his primary job is to clog the middle and occupy two OL. Top talent coming out of HS want a chance to do more than that.

You cannot effectively run a 3-4 without a NG. Smaller DT/DE types get punished brutally playing NG. It appears likely that Ty will be moved to NG, which will be a crying shame. The kid has loads of talent, but he is not big enough to take that kind of punishment and still make a mark that will turn the heads of pro scouts.

BTW, if you do not think Lee, Tubbs, Harris (hopefully), and Haywood can get it done at DT fro Texas, you are in for a load of disappointment in 2001.

Sorry to get in this so late, actually, I've been busy at work.

Won't Brian Thompson, J. Morris, Brian West, Jerod Penright, LeBrandon Sheppard and Ricky Cordoza (et al) make up for their deficiencies in DL Depth?

Shaq,

Unless those guys add 40 pounds and grow a couple of inches, no. They'll be engulfed by opposing offensive lines who have both talent and size. Plus, as linebackers, they're already 3-4 yards off the play. If the front three can be taken care of by single team play, they'll have to wade through and over the pileup there and also fight off the two other free linemen, perhaps a tight end, a fullback, maybe even a receiver (and, in our case, those guys aren't small) to get to the ball carrier/qb.

Also, I believe Brian West is playing pro baseball.
