Keep my friend's son, Mason, in your thoughts and prayers for the next few days. Tuesday night/Wednesday morning he was accidentally shot in the head while at a friend's house. The bullet entered and exited behind his ear. He is at Memorial Herman in a drug induced coma until the swelling goes down.
Prayers for Mason, his family, and the friend who accidentally did this are greatly appreciated.
Update 7/16 - The power of prayer is such an awesome thing! Mason has been moved to a rehab hospital now. He can walk and is talking, although his speech has been affected. It is slurred, and often he can not remember words. But he is trying to talk! They still have not removed the bullet and his short term memory is totally gone right now. He has no clue what happened to him, and no clue why he is in a hospital. Maybe that is a good thing right now. Mom and sister have moved back home from the hotel downtown by the hospital. He is expected to still be there for several weeks to a few months, with a very long journey still to come. But every day that you all prayed early on, he made it through one more, and his chances of survival increased. Thanks guys!
Update 7/9: They are still keeping Mason drugged, but reducing the amounts. The pressure in his brain rises each time they try to take him off the meds, but he is tracking people with his eyes, and appearing to make contact. They have taken him off the ventilator and put in a trach. There is still swelling in the brain and the bullet (a .22) still has not been removed, so the full extent of his injuries is still not known. It is estimated he could be in the hospital for as long as 10-12 months. The parents still do not know much of what happened that night, as well.

Update: Mason is still in a coma, but they are decreasing meds. The bullet did not exit, but did miss all areas that control major functions (medulla oblongata). It has also been found that the gunshot was most likely self inflicted. There is much that we do not know as the kids involved are not talking to the parents, only the police. Also we do know illegal substances were also involved, but not sure with whom. One person is in custody, though. Last word was that Mason had a 50/50 chance of surviving right now.
