A Comment on 2022 and the Future

If we go 8-4 I guess we’ll be okay with settling for that, though every loss was winnable. Plus that’s a three game improvement from last year. That’s assuming we win our last two, but I’m not laying money down on that.

Who is we

Fred Akers was hired by Frank Erwin & Governor Allan Shivers

DKR was hired by Bud Wilkinson

David was hired by DKR, who warned him he may not want the job

Mackovic was hired by Willie Cunningham over the objection of the "Committee of 300"

Mack Brown was hired by DKR

Charlie Strong was hired by Billie Powers

Herman was hired by Mike Perrin, but Mike sought input from many former players and "football people" with connections to the industry.

Take a look around the country at the major and not-so major schools messes made the last couple of years (aTm, OU, Auburn, VT, Arkansas, Florida, FSU, Convicts, UVA, Colorado, Arizona State, Tennessee, Nebraska, et al)

Knowing you can't have Urban Myth (more baggage than Southwest Airlines can carry), Saban (thank you Billie Powers), Dabo, Chris Peterson (thank you, Mack Brown), Lane Kiffin (again with the baggage thing), who do you go after?

I was responding to the ether as your comments had a bit of truth.
I have always said that after DKR, we should have just Fred Akers and Mack Brown in succession.
McWilliams, Mackovic, Strong, and Herman should have never had the spaces In between.
I fully believe that both Freddy and Mack would have recovered from the bad year they left on.
We would have been a whole lot better off in hindsight IMO.

Who I really wanted after Fred was jimmie Johnson but that was never going to happen. Second choice Don James Washington.

IDE,

I had a discussion with Deloss about hiring Jimmy Johnson. The following is as close to a transcript as I have of that conversation:

Me: Why not Jimmie Johnson?

DD: He's got a lot of excess baggage

Me: He's got a lot of excess wins

iii,

Anytime you start slipping and forget Billie Powers, call me and I'll give you even more reasons to dislike him. As I told him, we used to be friends; that's past tense in case you have forgotten. It will take 20 years to recover from your actions. Get your resume together because you *** will be fired by December 31.

Go on...

Above all disappointed Sark showed (to my mind) a lack of confidence in the team. Holding the ball with 37 seconds to go in the half was weak. He was scared we wouldn’t make the first down and afraid of turning over the ball - at least that’s my only explanation. Then 1st and goal from the 2 1/2 or 3 and no Bijan? Again no confidence in his players, his star player in fact.
Heck even Herman was unafraid to run Sam into the Ga defense on the goal line over and over till he got it in. I didn’t agree at the time btw, I thought Sam was getting killed.
So pissed at our offensive genius but proud as heck at our “work your a** off defense!

Holding on to ball with 37 seconds: no gas and all brakes! Weak and worthless!

Been optimistic about Sark since he took the job. Plenty of empathy and slack cut for serious challenges he inherited on and off the field from TH year 1 and year 2....

However, okie state & frog losses have seriously undermined my confidence in him as HC going forward. 11-11? Thinking of his mediocre HC records at UW and USC. Are we next?

I hope the Horns win last 2 games, win a bowl game - finish 9-4 and I can eat some crow.

"Hope" sucks, have confidence in yourself and go out with an attitude that we are going to WIN! IMO Mack was good at instilling this in his players.... I dont think Sark passionately does this.

The big question is whether this team will mail it in for the last two games (not sure we will be able to tell the difference n the offensive side of the ball) or will they man up dig deep and play with intensity. At this point, the stupid penalties, blown assignments appear to be part of Sark and his coaches special ingredients for baking the cake, so I don’t expect improvement there this late in the season, and I don’t know if they can muster the intestinal fortitude to overcome that. As for me, if I had to make a wager, I would consider two losses the odds on favorite, with 1-1 a 50-50 chance(pun intended) and 2-0 a long shot.

His(Sark’s) football strategy is questionable at best - not changing quarterbacks now in 2 games, leaving Robinson on the sideline for 2 downs when it’s first and goal from the 2, going for the blocked punt- and the list goes on - he’s showing no urgency to win and frankly not sure he knows how to win - again I will say he has cleaned a bunch of stuff up and is recruiting much better in the trenches than his predecessors- but there isn’t any excuse for this team not to be a solid top 20 ball club….

All i know is....Ive loved, watched, played, studied football my whole life.....and am pretty good with anything requiring deep analysis to boot.... BUT I am not a football coach, coordinator, paid analyst or any other supposed expert.
Sark and just about every other coach on the planet has more football knowledge than I and its not close. I am JoeFan.....
And if I can see you've got a problem with game day strategy, adjustments, approaches, and plans.....you better call Houston ..cause you've got a problem.

Wasn't Rogers in the middle of the Akers hiring? I had thought Frank was out of the job by then. (Considering where we have been he was a good hire.) As I remember, Royal wanted Campbell but was overruled.

And the clusterf - - k that was the search for a coach when Charlie was hired might have been the worst attempt at hiring a coach for a major program in all of the history of college football. Administration running around the country with their pants down being told "no thanks" because nobody wanted any part of their screwed-up mess. As you point out, part of the blame for the situation can be laid at the feet of Brown. Having said that, in the business world we do something call succession planning. College football is a business, too often managed by eggheads in acidemia and succession planning is not a consideration.

Rogers had nothing to do with hiring Fred. She had enough problems with Frank weeding out "the warts" on the academic side. She could go along or leave, but the choice was made while she was trying to balance on the fence. It was a two man show and anyone not supporting it could go to another school.

As for succession, many people quoted Ben Love as having said, "Success without a successor is failure". That from a man who never had a successor.
