That happened last season actually, and a great example of how this show works. A totally random action that makes absolutely no sense until you find out that Locke met him before that time. That also showed that Richard didn't totally understand time travel either - he thought Locke might recognize those items, and when he missed one of them, he thought that invalidated Locke's story.
But there is a difference with Aaron's situation because presumably, this trip back is to correct a misdirection in time. That implies to me the idea of getting back on track - so maybe putting Aaron on the island now messes that up.
