#3 Starter?? Thornhill made his 2nd start of the year yesterday. Given that we had 8 different pitchers start a game and 4 of them (Taylor, Cole, Milner & Stafford) all had 7+ starts, Thornhill was our #5 starter at best. Damn good reliever all year, but probably not the wisest choice for opening up the tourney. (Yes, I realize Carrilo took the "L".)
Agreed, Chest. Just a very poor decision by Augie with several other good choices available. But I guess that's why he gets the big bucks, to make those choices.
I guess that I have had trouble understanding Thornhill's start yesterday. The only thing that makes sense is that Augie didn't really care about winning or losing this game and wanted to see how Thornhill would do.
Augie didnt care about yesterday and doesnt care about this tournament. He treated it like a mid week game of no significance and the players seemed to have the same attitude. We will see normal rotation rest of way with Cole tomorrow and if we make it to Saturday Stafford and then Milner/by commitee .
I think there were four reasons for starting Thornhill on Wednesday and a couple were mentioned above.
1) Texas SHOULD be able to beat an 8 seed without their aces.
2) Augie wanted to see if Thornhill is a prospect for being a 4th starter. Teams need more than 3 starters to get through post season tournaments. TX had not settled on a 3rd starter (Stafford) until recently and are still looking for a possible 4th one.
3) Jungmann threw 120 pitches last Thursday against A&M. Not throwing him until yesterday gave him his usual amount of rest.
4) Gotta look ahead to the tournaments that really count. IMHO the second of the five championships is the least important.
All that being said, I think Texas is in a good position considering they are coming out of the elimination bracket.
Looking at the numbers... there are a possible 4 games remaining in the Big 12 tourney. That is 36 innings. To get through them Texas has Green, Milner, Stafford, Knebel, Thornhill, Urban, Carrillo, McKirahan, Bellow, Thomas, and Nuncio at their disposal.
I like our chances.
Of course I am not a pitching coach - I only play one on the internet.
The aggy series was Th-Sat. so Jungmann actually pitched last Thursday against aggy so he went on his normal one week rest by pitching yesterday. Same with Cole today and Stafford tomorrow.
