8/6 and 8/7 Practice

Just got back from Thursday's practice:

Wells and Thomas were the starting safeties tonight. Thomas is the ****. My new favorite player on defense.

Curtis Brown had a nice pick on a jump ball from Chiles to Montre Webber.

Chiles and Harris were both inconsistent as hell throwing, although I thought Chiles looked better. He's definitely a faster and more polished runner than Sherrod.

I thought Sam Acho looked great. He seemed to be all over the place. Beasley put some really solid hits on a few plays as well.

Kyle Hix was the starting right tackle, backed up by Tray Allen. Bobino is starting ahead of Norton. Kindle was starting ahead of Robinson.

I thought Kindle looked good. He was hustling his *** off on every play and really looked excited to be out there, like he was just having fun.

McCoy looked really sharp throwing the ball. Cosby and Shipley are really, really good at what they do. I think that Malcolm Williams will be the third receiver. DJ Grant is the most physically impressive WR in my opinion.

Chiles will be in better shape than any other player on this team. He throws four or five balls at QB, then immediately goes over and runs a route as a WR or lines up at RB to run the option with Colt. Dude doesn't get much time to rest.

I was not impressed at all with any of the tight ends. Looked slow and out of place. Did not look good trying to catch the ball.

Fozzy had a couple of really nice runs. He looked really confident running with the ball.

Antwan Cobb was out their running around and didn't seem affected by his injury, although he was wearing a green shirt.

I didn't hear Muschamp say a single word and barely saw him the entire time. Akina and Applewhite NEVER stop teaching.

Wasn't that Muschamp yelling "Get to the f_____ing ball!" on Colt's tipped pass that bounced way up and then fell in the secondary?

Here we go.... for 8/7

A couple few different starters on the first group for the D tonight.
Wells was at safety and Sergio was at SLB. The DBs rotated all night in different combinations so I believe they are still trying to get a fit for the best four as a group.

In passing drills Colt was sharp today on the money on most passes. Chiles looked like yesterday, i.e. not very good. While Sherrod's passes were quit as pretty as yesterday they were still beautiful.

Chiles caught more passes during drills today and they have worked some new plays into his package which was nice to see.

I man crush on M.Williams. Kid is going to light it up, again caught almost everything thrown to him, and showed his top gear a couple times, as well as his change of direction ability which I did not know he possessed. He is quit nifty in the open field.

In first team session the O wipped the defense's ***. Scoring a couple time and busting several long runs, and completing passes. Chiles even looked decent throwing the ball here. Not only were they just running plays successfully they were physically kicking the D's ***. Vondrell will be good he was trucking had and showed good ability in the open field. Fozzy will be our home run hitter this year as he busted a long run down the sideline and several good sized gains up the middle.

The Quan's catch was sick, to bad Colt was sacked on that play (pass SKEL)

Cody Johnson bucked three people including Muck on a pass he caught out of the flats.

The defense responded however in the second team session and forced a couple turnovers, E. Thomas int, Cu.Brown int, and a fumble that I believe either Beasley or Sergio caused (it was the far sideline.)

I don't know if the Chiles package was just for show, but the kid looks like a fish in water catching passes and running with the ball, he had a bid gain today on just a little flare pass out of the backfield. He got the edge and proceeded to gain 10-15 yards. He also has pretty good hands.

I also thought Chiles looked better tonight in the team portion. On Sherrod's defense he is only getting one series of plays with third teamers though...

That said Chiles had a decent night. Loved how he was used as a receiver.

I was at practice myself. The team as a whole seems to be more focused this year based on today's practice as opposed to last year. Last year had distractions with off field incidents and I think was still having the National Title hangover. It seems like '05 is now a distant memory and the team is hungry. I noticed a lot of enthusiasm from everyone.

That being said, remember as Allen Iverson once said, "Its practice!" We'll see what happens when they play with live bullets but it seems like the team is off to a good start.

Many thanks for the practise reports, great stuff!!

Was Cody at TB when he caught the pass where he ran over 3 people? How does he look physically (especially weight wise)? In high school he was rated the best FB in the country and was able to run a 4.4 at 225 pounds. I heard that he was up to 270 pounds a while back. Do you think Cody will play much this year and at what position?

What kinds of passes does Chiles throw most effectively (i.e. across the middle to the outside, short versus long, on the rollout versus in the pocket).

Could you go into a little more detail about how the O was physically kicking the D's rear? Specifically, was the O blocking really effectively? How well does Malcom Williams block? How is cody's blocking?

Do you see Chiles being more effective lined up as a running back or as a flanker? How would you rate Chiles for explosiveness (i.e. YAC potential) after he catches the ball compared to the other horn receivers?

Chiles mentioned that, since he is a QB, he already knows all the plays/routes for the receivers. Presumably no special packages have to be constructed for Chiles if he is just playing at RB or WR and running the standard plays.

When you say that DJ Grant is the most physically impressive horn receiver, could you go into a little more detail? How does he compare to Malcom Williams with respect to size (same height, right?), weight, strength, catching ability, running ability, speed, jumping ability, and blocking? I realize that it is difficult to answer such a complex question but am very interested to hear what you think. I am really intrigued that DJ might be physically a bit superior to Malcom.

Glad to hear Kindle is getting more reps now and since he looks to be healthy he should be the outright starter this year. Can't wait.

Thomas and Wells are starting safeties sits well with me. Haven't heard much about Palmer. He is just so so and holding down the fort?...could Cu Brown take over the starting spot at some point during the season?

Haven't heard much at all about the DL. How is the combo of Miller and Houston looking? Who are the 2 guys backing them up?...I would guess Alexander and Lewis but just not sure.

Cody was at fullback when he caught the pass, we lined up in an offset I formation. He does not wieght 275, I would say 240-255 range.

Chiles doesn't exactly have a bread and butter type of pass. Some of his passes looked good and some were god aweful. In my opinion he needs to work on his deep ball the most, as it hangs and flutters a bit. If I had to pick an area of throwing that he was the best at, I would say the intermediate routes over the middle, rather they be digs or seam routes.

The O was busting the D in the mouth, the backs were trucking and the O in general just had more of fire in their belly's. Like I said however the D responded in the second session. The O was blocking well, as evidenced by the several long runs and steady gains on the ground.

M.Williams blocks pretty good, not great. What you would expect from a reciver I would say, he will occupy his man but won't drive him to the ground ala Limas in the 05 Rose Bowl.

I really am enjoying the way they are using Chiles if they can deelope the package further it will be special. He looks like a fish in water catching passes, and motioning him into the back field with Colt and whomever is at RB opens up alot of options. They are also doing this with some of the other recivers, i.e. M.Williams.

Chiles is a very talented man with the ball in his hands as long as he doesn't have to throw. I would rank him and M.Williams at the top as far as explosiveness goes. Williams has better top end speed however Chiles's legs are stronger and he sets up blocks well.

They technically are not packages run just for Chiles, but they are I think geared to getting him on thefield more. Him lined up at WR catching passes is awesome as well as him motionning into the back field with Colt and the RB. Chiles has really good hands by the way.

As far as Grant looking like more of a speciman than M.Williams I would to respectively disagree. The only other reciever that looks close to the speciman that M.Williams is is P.Payne... but he doesn't play as well as he looks.

What I wanted to see but did not get a look at was M. Williams on a deep ball up the sideline. Anyways I believe he possess more after the catch ability than Limas, so if he can become the deep ball player that Limas was he will be a complete player.

Fico,

Great stuff, thanks for the info.

Did they run I much? Does it seem like Cody might be the number 1 FB? Before Antwaan Cobb (sp?) got hurt, he was a pretty good FB. Who impressed you most at FB? That is great news that Cody is not super heavy. Does he look pretty quick? Did he block pretty well? does he seem to have pretty decent hands when catching the ball?

Did you happen to notice if the blocking was strictly zone blocking or did they do any traditional down blocking (when they were in the I, for example)? Did they pull guards much?

In terms of running ability, how would you compare McGee, Ogbonnaya, and Fozzie? Does Ogbonnaya look quicker this year?

GD said:
"Fozzy (Whittaker) has an unbelievable level of quickness. He would remind our fans somewhat of a Hodges Mitchell where he's got the ability to jump laterally and pick up speed up really quickly. Vondrell (McGee), even though their size is really similar, is a little more of a downhill, move the pile kind of guy. And then Chris (Ogbonnaya) has just been here forever and he knows it about as good as anybody. He's tremendous in the blitz pick-up game, he's got great hands, he's got the ability because of his high school training to go outside and play some wide receiver from the backfield. So they all bring a little something different to the table, and it's our job to feature what they bring.".

did Cody get a chance to do any power running as a TB?

How does Chiles throw when he is rolling out? It seems like he would be so difficult to defned on the rollout.

Fantastic to hear that Malcom is so explosive. Also nice to hear that Chiles is good at setting up blocks. I should have noticed that last year but did not pick up on it. These guys should both be good for lots of YAC (i.e. will really help the short passing game).

It is very encouraging that Malcom and Chiles are being included in the running game from the WR position.

Malcom is good on the long ball according to Colt. Mack Brown's web site has some great quotes from Colt, GD, etc. GD said that Dan Buckner are quite good at going up and getting the ball (which I translate into being good on 50-50 balls).

The D improving under Muschamp is going to really help the O by challenging them to step up their game in practise.

They ran the I a decent amount. Probably about 10 plays or so during team. I believe Luke Tienamen (sp) was first at fullback but C.Johnson was the only fullback that touched the ball. Cobb still has a no contact jersey on so he was somewhat impossible to judge since he couldn't hit.

C.Johnson can catch the ball well, he looks pretty quick for a fullback. Can't comment on his blocking ability to much as I lost him in the line when he was leading the running back.

To tell you the truth I was not paying attention to the offensive blocking scheme, weird since we just had a big discussion regarding the issue. But I can not recall any guards tearing around the corner leading the backs.

Obi One is the bes receiver out of the group in my opinion, and the best at blitz pick up, although he did wiff on Bobino once on Wed. He runs hard, not terribly fast, but got to the corner on occasion.

McGee is a tough as runner, he runs hard, I mean real hard. He also has some deceptive speed as he was able to get to the corner and second level a couple times. He punished tacklers when they hit him.

Fozzy is quick and is pretty fast as he was able to turn the corner and go 40 for a score in team. He also does a good job of keeping his balance and his pad level low when he is running inside. Both him and McGee have good feet as they kept them moving in piles and usually fell forward.

Cody did not get any reps at fullback.

Chiles got sacked by Eddie Jones when he rolled out once
but I don't recall that many designed rolls for him, and I don't recall him passing successfully on any of those if there was one. He throws all arm right now which could be major problem for him. If he can fix that maybe his passes wouldn't resemble my toilet after a Chipotle dinner.

If you short passing game works out getting these guys the ball in space I will be just as happy as if the deeper passing game develops. Hey, hopefully both happen.

This is going to be a really busy season for Chiles. He'll be working hard on improving his throwing, will be backing up Colt at QB, and will probably get quite a few snaps at WR. He can get by with just using his arm on a short pass but he needs to step into those intermediate and long passes. Maybe he should practise a bit with a javelin.

I am guessing that the horn short passing game will improve quite a bit this year because it sounds like they are working on it and are going to be throwing the short ball to explosive guys like Malcom, Chiles, Fozzy, and V McGee. Sounds like Cody Johnson also has the ability to catch a short pass and turn it into plenty of YAC. Good things happen when you get the ball to an explosive guy in space (especially if there is some decent down field blocking).

The short passing game will definitely make it easier for the intermediate passing game to succeed (because it keeps you in good shape with respect to down and yardage. draws the secondary closer to the line of scrimmage, and takes the heart out of the blitz). If given time, colt throws the intermediate pass well and UT receivers usually catch the intermediate pass well.

A possible downside of more emphasis on the short passing game is that explosive RB types who work well in the short passing game (where catching is much easier and you don't have to run much of a pattern) and the WR running game (i.e. end arounds) are probably not going to do as well at the intermediate routes.

It is great to have guys like malcom williams who are both explosive and real good at the intermediate and long passing game.
