Chiles still needs a lot of work throwing
Sergio had his hand in the dirt a lot
Sergio and Rak were both playing out of the 2 point (standing) -----some plays
M.Williams is a beast and will play his way on the field
P. Payne looks the part, man if he could just put it together

The defense was bringing a lot of different types of pressure during practice, almost exclusively of the zone blitz type, very little straight man. I think our secondary will be alright, E. Thomas is legit, and Beasley is like a blanket out there. Gideon is always around the ball and usually in good position, and Palmer played solid, nothing spectacular but nothing bad.

Bobino blew past Chris O. one play to sack Colt.
Fozzy is the real deal, and Vondrell is a load, just ask Palmer.

The O ran about three plays with Chiles split out, he caught one pass in team, a five yard dig pattern... probably could had made a few more miss if the whistle wasn't blown. The other times he motioned into the back field with Colt and the RB and they ran a zone read option, zone read with the RB and Colt and Chiles optioning out the other direction.

Although Colt was sacked by Rak, he threw a deep ball that Quan made a great adjustment to and caught over Chykie Brown.

Chiles did make some decent throws in team and scale although a few in scale were after the buzzer went off (4 seconds). He did make a nice throw on a corner route to Kirkendoll in team that would have scored because I believe C.Scott blew coverage on that one.

Sherrod did not get much time in team and did not have a good day in the team session.

Thats all I can remember for now, will post as it comes back to me. Sorry for the Skitzo post just typed as the memories were coming.

Did I mention that Beasley is good.

suprises from your post:

Melton, K.Robinson, Bobino, and Gideon all starting on defense! i can't believe they were playing with the first team! did u get this right? i really expected Norton and E. Jones to start on D this year...

if we start a true freshman at safety we really might be in trouble...unless he's just that damn good?

Wells did get several reps at safety but those were the first two units, it is still early so a lot can change. Wells also got reps at the nickel spot. In my opinion based on the spring game and this practice, Gideon is the best option right now, he usually in good position and always around the ball.

I think Kindle will overtake Robinson before the first game, him Bobino and Muck will be our starters, I don't think Bobino will give Norton a chance to take him off the field.

Beasley is a bad ***.

I dragged my son 8 and daughter 6 to watch. I was lucky to score a parking spot right across from Denius. I hate watching practice at Denius. The 18 wheelers heading Southbound on the upperdeck have a great view. They tell us so as they honk it up.

Major and Mack were dressed almost identically. Orange shorts and orange top of the shine kind. Major elected to go with the baggier and longer shorts and shirt...tucked in. Major has been working on his weight in the mornings at Town Lake this summer. It shows.

Denius is the perfect place to watch practice if there weren't so many damn people.

My kids love Colt McCoy. They referred to him as one of the three black guys throwing the ball. To orange guys. My son shouted that another black guy had just showed up..."Walker" he shouted and pointed.

Colt looks great. If he disappears, Harris would be a better #2 than Chiles. Chiles is a special player, but not at throwing the ball. More than a couple time was he whistled dead still holding the ball. The coverage was not bad either.

Lots of little bugs flying around. I spit out one or two. The sunset was nice. I needed the fix. Seeing the team hitting in pads was great. I'm going tomorrow.

Fozzy tried to pick up Kindle once on a blitz... Kindle laid him out.

Passing game was crisper than I expected.

M williams will be a great one if he can seperate himself from the pack enough to get substantial playing time.

Chris O still looking great catching balls out of the backfield.

I took my son out for his 8th birthday tonight. Sat down in fire ants on the hill side, but we got out with only a few bites.

I don't think Chiles has the arm strength or the accuracy (yet?) to be the backup. He was inconsistent, and underthrew a lot of balls in drills. They seemed to float. On at least one long ball in drills he reared way back, like a little league outfielder gunning for home plate.

So I was excited to see him line up in the slot, and motion to the backfield, where I think he can be a playmaker and add some flavor to the offense. He did have a great spin move on a QB run, early in the scrimmage, that had the crowd cheering.

Buckner and Payne have good hands. And big forearms. And Fozzy looked quick.

Agreed that Harris throws a pretty ball. He and Colt looked accurate in drills. Colt's throws had some zip.

My son was getting bored by 7:30 and wanted to leave, and it WAS his birthday after all, so I capitulated and we left about 8:15. I'll be back for Thursday, alone and with a can of bug spray.

Let's not forget that Sherrod has a really good motor on him as well. Maybe not as fast as Chiles but purty danged quick. Think back to his long scrambles in scrimmages and reposts from practices. If he gets a chance to play, I think he will be tough to take off the field.

Surprised and dissapointed that Wells is not even listed among the first two units. The guy impressed even before the start of his first year in the spring game of '07 as an early enrollee. Can't figure this one out.

That Bevo Beat article says Wells was involved and a big hitter. Perhaps they are just trying to get some of the younger guys even more reps with the 1st teamers.

Also says Chiles had one of the best passes of the night to Kirkendoll.

All accounts say the receivers looked great. Good to hear.

A couple observations. First I was happy to see that the team is healthier than I have ever seen as a unit going into summer practice, and most players have made significant improvement getting in shape physically during the spring. The first and second string o-line's development in the off-season was particularly striking.

The only change from the spring I noticed was when the first team offense lined up Kirkendoll was at SE instead of Collins. Collins had moved to second team at the slot with Williams at FL and Webber at SE.

I was particularly impressed with Webber who was second in the flanker rotation in drills behind Quan (Williams was third). Chiles throws still aren't on the mark very often and Webber did a tremendous job adjusting to them, which is good for Chiles since they were matched up in all the drills. Collins wasn't as consistent in a similar situation. Buckner dropped a lot of balls, but settled down as practice went along. Grant was late in the rotation as Colt's third target of each rotation, but it looks like he is still getting up to speed on the drills.

Our DL is short, the shortest I can recall. Not that it matters given the importance of leverage along the line, but it was odd how striking it is. Randall is probably three inches taller than any other DT or DE except for the Howard. Alexander has really bulked up and looks like he will be impossible to move. Humphrey is maybe an inch taller than Alexander and a lot of pounds lighter, but built in the same mold. I too was surprised to see Melton at first team DE, but without seeing them work in pads I can't make a judgment one way other other.

In 11 on 11 they were still in nickel a lot with Thomas moving over the slot and Scott coming in. Gideon looks like a fixture at safety, always in the right spot. I expect those too to start, given they ended the spring that way. The battle at safety will be for the third spot when they are in nickel. Note that Robinson is the one that gets pulled when we go to nickel leaving Bobino and Muck.

The placekickers (Bailey, Lawrence and Tucker) each made their kicks. I can't recall having three better kickers on the roster at one time. Punter is another matter with all three (Gerland, Gold, and Tucker) booming some and shanking others, but punters usually start out practice inconsistent. Gerland is running first team right now, but don't be surprised if Gold beats him out because of his consistency.

Cosby and Shipley were receiving punts during special teams practice, but earlier they had some of the younger players catching them from the machine, in no particular order Kirkendoll, Hales, Monroe, Ch Brown, Scott and a couple others I don't recall.

The practice routine has been changed up quite a bit especially on defense. When I showed up at 6 the LBs and DBs were walking through position drills practicing picking their coverage assignments when they had 2 or 3 receivers in their area. They spent about a half hour doing that alone.

Thanks for the report Fico (along with RayDog and others). I personally like the fan reports because they're less likely to be corrupted by spin.

Given that Davis wants 9 or 10 WRs available who can play well enough it wouldn't surprise me if a couple freshman get some playing timea nd Buckner and Grant do look the most physically ready. I did not see Fitzhenry and I would give Monroe and edge over Hales due to his speed. Even though Monroe's routes weren't all that great he always seems to get to the ball. He's a real wildcard right now because of his exceptional speed.

On another note I wasn't impressed with the 2 QB system so far. In drills they had Chiles split out wide a couple times. Once it bounced off his hands on an out route (It was high), and on a slant he bobbled the ball. His route's were not great, his hands were not great and he and Colt weren't in sync. They need practice. A couple other plays they ran in 11 on 11 were busts except the one mentioned previously.

My personnel opinon of the Wrs is
Quan
Ship
M.Williams
Collins
Kirkendoll
Webber
Buckner

These guys are furhter behind
Payne
Hales
Grant
Monroe

Kindle had his hand in the dirt a bit last night, ecspecially during the group portion of practice. He still mostly played at linebacke though, but he was coming of the edge a lot.

Beasley
Palmer
Chykie

Curtis Brown
A. Williams (he will move up by the end of the year I believe)

Thats off the top of my head right now. I'll check further tonight.
