72 Dolphins have me rooting for New England

Honestly, the arrogance of a historically overrated group is getting annoying. I love Garo Yapremian condescending to grant New England a spot on the "mountain" next to his team. Would anyone remember him if he hadn't handed the Redskins their one touchdown in that Super Bowl on a silver platter? Maybe he should be inviting Leon Lett to sit next to him instead in commemoration of famous Super Bowl screw-ups.

The bad thing is that if New England does win, these old guys are gonna yell even louder to anyone who will listen that they are STILL the first ones to do it.

The media has used the former Dolphins as needed to gin up a few stories. My impression is that they've had enough and are ready to roll out the "Greatest team of all time" label for NE which should put the Dolphins in their place.

Unfortunately this particular record is more complicated than "can it be broken." Technically it cannot be broken, but it can be implicitly. If Mercury Morris has ever been right about one thing, it's the part where he says the winning % is the thing that matters. That part is true and that part cannot be broken and only tied. But there are other variables that make an implicit "breaking" of a record if a team does it now because of the expanded league and the elongated season. Couple those two general facts with what this particular Pats team has done, and you're right, insert "records are meant to be broken."

Put yourself in their place. And be honest. Would YOU be magnanimous if you were about to be kicked to the curb? Probably not.

19-0 > 17-0. It's that simple.

I would love to see someone shut up the '72 Dolphins, but I don't want it to be the '07 Patriots. The whole "Spygate" thing, as well as the fact that they admitted to wanting to blow out opponents to prove that they were the best of all time, really hurt the Pats' image in my eyes; if not for those two things, I would be rooting for the Pats to go 19-0.

In addition, the way they're behaving is traditionally seen as unbecoming of a great athlete. Did Tony Dorsett act this way when Ricky was threatening to break his record? Hell no, he was standing next to Ricky's mom going apeshit just like she was and giving her hugs and all that. There's a right way and a wrong way to go about conducting yourself when you're in that kind of position. The 72 Dolphins do it the wrong way (and they're not the only ones that do it wrong. Eric Dickerson is just like them in this regard).

Hehe can you imagine Dorsett on the sidelines after the game saying "Well, Ricky never had to play the teams I played, and he still has to turn it in to a great pro career to be equal to me, but if he does manage to do that, I'll make room for him up here with me."

I'm reminded of Mack's comments after the NC game when he told the team to not let that great achievement be the defining accomplishment of their lives. Some of those old-timers should be a little more savvy and possibly a little more magnanimous.

as a somewhat Cowboy fan, I really don't want the Pats to be labeled as the greatest team of all time and a loss will shut them up forever, especially considering their perfect start.

to me, it comes down to who do you want to shut up more? Pats fans (which indirectly benefits the Boys) or the 72 Dolphins who are old men and are mostly forgotten in today's sports chats.

go giants!!!

A leaping Aaron Ross makes an interception in the endzone, barely keeping both feet inbounds, the Giants defense stops the Patriots on 4th and 1...... and Eli Manning rushes into the endzone on 4th and 5 to beat the "greatest team ever"?

May the Patriots' "perfect" season go up in the black smoke of Roger Goodell's burned video tapes and written notes. Go G-Men!

If the 72 Fins and 07 Patriots played a game with 72's rules, can you imagine what kind of headhunting Rodney Harrison would be doing? Someone would die.

What part do you disagree about? The fact that the Dolphins cheated, or the part about them having a **** schedule?

cheating about a coaching hire is not the same thing as cheating about plays and stealing signals, the latter affects a game outcome much more. I'm not agreeing with the "72 Fish were cheaters!" bit.

they won all their playoff games by slim margins and never really had any kind of dominating performance. Sort of reminds me of 2002 Ohio State, just a boring team that wins with a lackluster style.
