6'6' Codey McElroy at 1B?

I eventually became comfortable with Alex Silver at 1B last year because he was able to stabilize the position defensively when the other candidates really weren’t. Still, in my mind, he remained an offensive liability because you usually expect a 1B to hit with significant power and that becomes even more important when the team lacks power at other positions. Silver batted .267 in 45 games last year with ten doubles, one home run and 19 RBI.

When I saw 6' 6" Codey McElroy working out at shortstop, I immediately wanted to see how he would do at 1B. His additional wingspan would certainly save a couple errors a year from somewhat wildly thrown balls. If he has shortstop experience, I’m assuming he can handle the position glove-wise. Last year at EASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE COLLEGE he played in 59 games, batting .276 (53-for-192) with seven doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 33 RBI.

If CJ Hinohosa settles in as the everyday SS, I sure would like to see Codey McElroy play some 1B. He might be able to handle the position defensively as well or better (6'1" vs. 6'6") than Silver and it seems he can hit for significantly more power.

Augie and skip both said that Codey is being looked at ss and 1st base but they want to work on his foot work more before moving him around too much in the infield. I think CJ will eventually be our everyday ss because he is so good at that position and he can swing a bat.

Isn't 6'6" generally considered too tall for SS? (just a few exceptions in the history of the game for extreme high level play at SS for someone so tall I believe)
