50 Worst Cars of All Time

Haha-my stepfather bought a Renault Dauphine. Quite an unusual ride in 1960 or so. Can't believe it did 0-60 in 32 seconds. I think some bicyclists or skateboarders might beat it in a race. But I had an even worse car-a Renault Caravelle. No way to get any parts for the damn thing, and it would break down weekly. Electrical stuff refused to work all the time.

It's pathetic that Detriot's only answer to the stricter emissions requirements first put in place in the early 1980's was to reduce the power of the engine. There's no thought to decreasing the weight or (gasp) using alternative power (e.g., electricity). It's just, "eh, we've got a monopoly, so why should we even try to innovate".

It's not even remotely an actual 'worst cars' list. Just look at the explanation for the 95 Ford Explorer. There's not a bad word about the vehicle itself.

I suppose it's a question of what makes a car "bad."

Is a car "bad" merely because it's ugly, even if it performs well (e.g., 1911 Overland OctoAuto)?

Is a car "bad" if it looks great but doesn't perform up to expectations (e.g., 1980 Corvette 305 "California Edition")?

Is a car "bad" if it looks good and performs well but has a disturbing tendency to kill its driver (e.g., 1961 Corvair)?

Is a car "bad" if it looks good and performs well but has a disturbing tendency to increase pollution that could kill others (e.g., 1995 Ford Explorer)?

Personally, I think they're all "bad," though in very different ways. A bad design is very different from a socially irresponsible one. And perhaps they should make different lists--Top 50 Ugliest Cars; Top 50 Underperforming Cars; Top 50 Most Dangerous Cars; Top 50 Most Socially Irresponsible Cars.

All would be interesting lists. But frankly, the Ford line of SUV's would probably be on all four lists.

I am extremely surprised that the Dodge K Car (Reliant, etc.) isn't listed... that thing was nothing but kerrrrrrrap.

My Mom got one used via auction from a friend with a dealer's license & it was still insanely overpriced... It's rare that you'll find a new car that hasn't left the lot with less value than one built 3 years earlier.

Hell, I'm shocked the AMC Matador didn't make the cut, given that it was basically a hybrid between the Pacer and a confused sperm whale.

But a nice article nevertheless. Cleverly written.
