2023/2024 Season - RT Era Begins

Sure, but when March rolls around, 22>18. Barnes was great at creating marquee games for our very good teams, but until we can prove that we're that good, I'm fine with patsies at home.

The MSG tournament has Louisville (REALLY awful last year) but UConn and Indiana are supposed to be very good.

Shaka in Milwaukee and LSU at a neutral site aren't going to be easy. The games in Austin will be. We should be no worse than 10-3 with that nonconference slate, but I'm hoping for 11-2. It's all about the XII schedule.

That is a super weak schedule. These things are mostly made in advance but it should allow this team to create some chemistry. Other than LSU, I am not sure who would even be a real game.

Some "quiet offseason" thoughts as we kick into basketball season:

1. Picked third in the conference, but like I said earlier this summer, it's probably a distant third because of how good KU is.

2. I never commented on the basketball schedule format for conference games, and it's apparent that we got screwed on several fronts.
  • Have to play BU and UH twice.
  • Have to go to Lawrence, Provo, Cincy, Fort Worth
  • The four "home-only" teams we get might finish in the bottom-4 in the conference.
It was a load of **** and I'm very glad we're leaving this trash conference.

3. They posted a roster and Horton is rocking #9. No men's basketball player we've ever had didn't conform to the "must wear 0-5" rule. The NCAA relaxed the rule in June, and Horton is the answer to the new trivia question.

4. The new roster is 16-deep including walk-ons, but I'm envisioning a lot of lineups with only 8 guys:
Starters: Disu, Mitchell, Hunter, Weaver, Abmas
Bench: Shedrick, Horton, Cunningham

Yep. The conference office will do all they can.

One last year to endure the petty BS, and then we can scrape them off our shoes as we exit.

Since this team is unlikely to win the conference championship then a tougher, gerrymandered schedule might be a good prep for the dance.

Perhaps I am naive but conference leadership showing such petty bs as they have just makes no sense. Royal had many sayings that all equated to having class. Its quite obvious how little the leadership of the b12 really has. Yes, 1 last year to put up with this.

The longhorns are deemed privileged therefore there will never be a completely level playing field no matter what conference.

From behind the ESPN paywall:

"Best case: Max Abmas brings his high-scoring ways to the big stage and pushes Hunter Dickinson all season long for Big 12 player of the year honors. Tyrese Hunter improves his 3-point accuracy for a second consecutive season. Dillon Mitchell shows why he was ranked higher than Brandon Miller and Gradey Dick in the recruiting class of 2022.

Worst case: Following up on success proves more difficult than expected. The "transfer superteam" model worked like a charm last season, to the tune of a Big 12 tournament title and an Elite Eight run. Can those players come together for a second season in a row? Will an undersized backcourt be a liability on D?"

Can't say I disagree much.

Hunter - he needs to get back to more of what was working at ISU. We need him more for his defense and ball distribution than trying to be a scorer.

Abmas - I don't believe he's in the same tier as Dickinson, but he might be our best true scorer since... I don't know? Reggie Freeman?

Mitchell - I'll believe it when I see it.

Backcourt - Yeah it's going to be an issue. We'll end up putting Brock Cunningham on some smaller-ish guards on D to make up for it. Abmas wasn't exactly known as a defender. I think that's why RT took some chances on guys like Onyema... need bodies to take the fouls and clog the lane because our guards can't.

Watched the replay of the exhibition. Without Disu and Shedrick the Horns are a really small team. Definitely a work in progress. Abams was a little off but he definitely had a quick release and smooth shot. Hunter plays bigger than his height. Mitchell is much better when he stays within the offense and doesn’t try to do things (like over dribble) to impress the scouts. Onyema is a big body, but doesn’t seem to have great hands and his footwork needs improvement but he should provide decent front court depth. Horton is a wild card but showed flashes of being able to be the sixth man like Rice was last year (just get in Rice’s neighborhood as a sixth man would be great). The weak early schedule is probably good for this team so it can start to come together and find their roles.

Me thinks you got lost on your way to on the field. I know it happens especially with all that PK sunshine in your eyes.

RT reeled in another one. Tre Johnson committed to Texas. Hope these guys all make it onto campus. Lots of exit ramps these days. In any event, good job RT.
