2022-2023 Season

Vic just hasn't had much luck arranging home-and-home series with Top 25 programs. It doesn't get better than UConn, so he's reeled in the "big one" so to speak; just need a couple more like that every season. Princeton is not bad.

South Florida was the return game of the home-and-home series started by Karen Aston.

I was really hoping a series with Arizona would continue (still owe them a road game) as I thought Adia Barnes wouldn't shy away from tough non-conference games, but their non-conference schedule for this season refutes that.
She punted that home game to next season. Which I am cool with. The prospect of potentially not playing Stanford or Tenn sucks

Shay runs a 5:59 1600 meters! That is an amazing time. God I’m ready to see Vic’s team lace’em up! Going to be a Great year!

The Men’s schedule is out including conference games so maybe somebody can spend some time on the Women’s schedule now UGH

Still hard to believe that our first game isn't until 11/14. Maybe it's intentional so that Geno doesn't get a preview. ;)
Our official schedule hasn’t been released, i think they just compiled that one on ESPN out of other schedules that are already released. We should have more than 8 nonconference games, probably a home game before the 14th.

That schedule doesn't include the three tournament games so that makes 11 non conference games. With 18 Big 12 games that may be right around the NCAA limit for regular season games. I can't figure out exactly what that limit is though.

Just curious, who is everyone’s two most impactful players for the upcoming season and why? Yes this will be a team contribution and everyone is vitally important but just for fun which two players make you say “these two will have the biggest impact on our team and season”?

That’s a tough question because there is so much talent on the team and it will definitely take a team effort to win the Big 12 and advance beyond the Elite Eight.

I’ll answer with the two players that we can’t afford to be without; Rori Harmon and Aaliyah Moore.

I'll say Taylor Jones and Sonya Morris because those two players play positions where production from them is key. And they're also players that will be able to impact the game not only on offensive but also defensively.

Idk if I can answer it either. I will say I think this team goes as far as production in the paint and bench production will take them. We know what a healthy AMo and Rori can do so I say those 2, but we not Vic doesn’t know the starters yet or how the pieces are going to move. He in the past has played, even in conf play, 7-10 depending on the game. I say bench because we legit have 8 that could start legit in my opinion, but who fits together best. Also the 3 that don’t start will need to come in the game fix what’s broken or add fuel to fire. Also, post play because last year after AMo got hurt we had to pivot and Gatson and Ebo were steady and solid but not dynamic as far as taking up space on a scout sheet so if one got hot it was a bonus. I think we need to have the Big XII 6th woman of the year coming off the bench tho. I say
Harmon
Morris
Holle
Moore
Jones is starters

Gonzales, Hunter, Jack
Gatson, Faye/Muhammad
We go 10 deep most of season unless it’s tight

Btw it’s hard for me to take the starting spot away from Holle her production & focus in the 1st and 3rd quarters was unmatched. She’ll play 10-14mins and it feels like she played 25mins. Also, Gonzales, Morris, and Hunter are all competing because we now Vic’s PGs play heavy mins so Rori is playing 32-35 mins. Again our post play is key. AMo still has some proving to do so I think it will be platoon because AMo, Jones, Gatson, Faye, & Muhammad all will battle it out.
Amo solid PF but has to show she is Alpha
Jones b4 injury at OSU stud dbl/dbl machine
Gatson solid starter & still and reached ceiling
Faye starter on bad big12 team but can play
Muhammad girl is good and slept on she was the glue of the stacked desoto team that had 7 d1 players

I’ll say AMo and Shaylee. Shaylee is a 2-time all American, I think she plays a bigger role than Morris.

Starters:
Rori
Shaylee
Holle
AMo
Jones

First Up:
Morris
Deyona
Jak
Kyndall
Faye

Tough to know the discussions which took place between our coaches and the incoming transfers as to how they'd be used at Texas, but I can't imagine that Sonya Morris (one season remaining) and Shaylee Gonzales (the star at BYU) would come to Texas without understanding how high their chances were of being starters and playing a bunch of minutes. Both have pro aspirations, and as long as they come in and work as hard as expected by our coaching staff, they will be starters more often than not, IMO. We don't have better offensive players than Gonzales and Morris at SG and SF; so, perhaps it all comes down to who plays better defense.

PG: Harmon
SG: Gonzales
SF: Morris
PF: Moore
C: Jones

Obviously, "impactful" can mean different things to different posters.

Losing Ebo at Center and Allen-Taylor/Matharu at SG results in a lot of lost rebounds, and 3-point buckets. Who will step up and make an impact in those areas? Between Jones and Faye, one has to make an impact on the boards/shot-blocking for us to not take a step back defensively. They also have to score efficiently in the paint. Who will be our 3-point threats and bust those zone defenses which we will be facing more than ever with so many big bodies in the paint? Gonzales and Morris aren't afraid to shoot; they just need to make better shot selections than at their previous schools and not force things unnecessarily.

Moore's biggest challenge will be improving her habit of getting into foul trouble, and continue improving her conditioning. Her skills and effort are always gonna be there; but, she can't contribute if she gets sent to the bench. From our returning players, she has the most immediate potential to become a double-digit scorer and high-count rebounder. In some ways, I can say the same about DeYona Gaston regarding foul trouble.

Regarding the loss of Ebo Texas won’t lose any production on the boards with the addition of Faye and Jones who are both better on the boards than Ebo was. Ebo was great defensively and that aspect will be missed the most but Faye and Jones do block a lot of shots so it’s going to be interesting to see.

I definitely agree Moore needs to work on her conditioning and staying out of foul trouble because she will be needed a lot this season. Moore can easily average 15-20 a game as long as she’s on the floor and what I’ve seen from her in the 3x3 you can tell she is about to take a huge step. A lot of moving pieces this season but this team has the talent to make serious noise this season they just need to bring it together.

Well, the majority of us had accepted long ago that the home non-conference schedule was going to suck.

As for the Big 12 conference schedule, I don't think I've ever been happier as to how it starts out for us.

I can only surmise power-5 conference teams do not want to face Vic's 94 feet of no fun. I can only assume Tennessee cancelled the rivalry - perhaps some upset feelings when Tennessee traveled all the way to Austin only to have the game cancelled at the last moment due to COVID.

I'm guessing the Tennessee game was not scheduled this year because we may face them in the Battle of the Bahama's tournament November 19-21.

If you'll note, there's a 12/31 home game against K-State. I wonder if Big12 trying to screw with Texas? Or was it simply an open window at the Moody where a band wasn't playing? Still.....boooo!
