2021 Recruiting - WBB

The 2021 class is now officially over-signed.
Texas keeps bolstering its 2021 recruiting class with 6-5 center Femme Sikuzani | Hookem.com
It does say that we are over the limit for players. I don't know if he believes the maximum amount will boosted which it most likely will due to the virus but it won't last very long. I do expect one or two players to transfer. Not going to name any names but I do think some will due to lack of playing time. I also do believe this add could be a result of Collier leaving early for the draft which I believe is an 80% chance of her doing so.

Understood but, if I read the NCAA announcement correctly (that’s a big IF because I think they usually read like IKEA instructions), the scholarship max will only be increased to account for seniors this season who choose to return next year.

This looks correct to me. However, I sure would like an explanation as to how Celeste Taylor (as an example) can be listed as a Sophomore on the 2020-2021 roster and Kobe/Femme be listed as Sophomores on the 2021-2022 roster. All three players played as Freshmen last year.

Does that mean Celeste will be a Sophomore again in 2021-2022?

I had the same question and so I went to the texassports page:
Women’s Basketball adds Femme Sikuzani to signing class - University of Texas Athletics

and read their announcement about adding the two JUCOs. I wondered, how will they be listed?

They provide a table that's titled: 2021-22 Texas Women's Basketball Recruiting Class (as of Nov. 18, 2020)

So for the class that starts their first year in Fall 2021, they list Kobe/Femme as sophmores and Harmon/Hunter/Moore as freshmen. I decided to go with what they listed and not my personal guess.

Yes, racer, I understand what is listed, I just don't understand why it is listed that way.

My question still stands, for anyone who can explain. Will Celeste be a Sophomore again next season?

Things that excite me about this signing class and the hard work put in by the new coaching staff:

- since we didn't find out about Kobe and Femme choosing Texas until this week, we will only have to wait one year to watch them play in a Longhorns uniform (not multiple years like with some of those super early verbal commits like Charli); heck, not even Kyndall committed super early so it won't be a long wait to see her either

- coaching staff hitting the JUCO trail to fill gaps in the roster; I have to believe Coach Lovato was huge in that area due to her JUCO time and success at Trinity Valley

- bringing in the two best guards in the state of Texas, and continuing our presence in the Houston area; super-athletic, super quick, and super skilled in all areas of the game

- dipping into Oklahoma and grabbing the best player that state has produced in a long time; in case you missed it in one of Schaefer's recent interviews, he did indicate that she had verbally committed to the previous coaching staff; so, thanks to them for the early "assist"

- adding more perimeter shooting; we need it to spread the floor and break some of those zone defenses we see in the Big 12

- Top 4 nationally ranked recruiting class assembled in basically 6 months during this difficult pandemic

Preseason JUCO Top 25 with Texas connections:
10. South Georgia Tech
Coach:
James Frey
2019-20 record: 30-2
Games to Watch: Georgia Highlands, Feb. 6
Player(s) to watch: Femme Sikusani, Hope Butera, Moe Shida, Niya McGuire

Jets leaning on inside play and leadership from Moe to carry them. Vera Charles and Imani McNeal, sophomore guards, will give the Jets experience and toughness on the perimeter. They are five deep in the post and will need to develop from the perimeter for SGTC to be really good. They had 252 made 3's move on to the Division 1 from last years team, so they need their perimeter players to step up.

6. Casper
Coach:
Dwight Gunnare
2019-20 record: 29-3
Games to Watch: Northeastern, Jan. 29; Western Nebraska, Feb. 3
Player(s) to watch: Kobe King-Hawea and Natalia Otkhhmezuri

Casper will be a contender to win it all this season with their elite talent and depth.

World Exposure Report No. 1 Junior College prospect in Kobe King-Hawea will provide scoring and toughness that will help Casper take the next step. She was named the World Exposure Report Freshman of the Year and has recently signed with to play at Texas next winter.

Philipina will be announcing her commitment tomorrow at 10 a.m. I'm not sure this one will be us which is probably why we got the center from Juco. Considering we are over the limit as it is I don't think we will be getting her.

For purposes of athletic eligibility, yes, that is how I read the information released. But it is up to each school to decided whether to extend financial aid for an extra year. Also, the flexibility around the 15 scholarship limit is only for next year.

She is a true sophomore this season (2020) Schools depending on $$$ will be allowed to add another year of eligibility for each athlete due to the pandemic. Consider this season a " redshirt" year. But a redshirt year in which they are allowed to play. lol

You may be on to something, cnb. I think we need to invent a new term to describe this "redshirt" year. How 'bout "playable redshirt" or "purported redshirt"? I hope they don't call it a "covid redshirt", although that probably describes it best.

I was hoping to use alliteration, but can't find a good word beginning with "r". "Recycled redshirt" doesn't quite do it for me.
