2021 Recruiting - Football

4-star DE Marcus Burris from Pleasant Grove
Although it doesnt look great for us at the moment. Also, it seems like Burris' stock has fallen off somewhat (he did have an injury)

From Roach --
I spoke briefly with Jacksonville (Fla.) Bishop Kenny offensive lineman Michael Myslinski yesterday. He indicated that a decision will come soon and could be in the next two weeks. Myslinski told me that Texas was set to meet with him today via a zoom call. Iowa, Maryland and Florida State are the other schools factoring in here, but there is some confidence on the Texas side. Myslinski is close with Herb Hand and their families are old friends. We will see how Texas pans out down the stretch.
.

Couple CBs in for Myslinski to Texas
His dad is an NFL strength coach

On the "blue-chip ratio" of UT and aggy

Herman took over a roster with ~47% blue-chip ratio. He has the ratio up to ~64% heading into his 4th year

aggy is a different story. Jimbo took over a 44% blue-chip ratio team and has managed to boost it to just 47-48% heading into his 3rd year. And they are paying $75M for it
But Herman is on the hot seat seat because no Natty by his 3rd year.

A 350lb interior DL can be good, see Tony Siragusa. But I think Sweat and Coburn would both be more effective if they played in the 325-330 lb range.

We got a Rivals version of a CB in today for another DT as well (by Sam Spiegelman). Ikechukwu Iwunnah is Wheaton's teammate. Does discus and triple jump in track season (at 275, he can triple jump around 40'). Seems like a good type of DT for use against spread teams in a 4-man front
Spiegelman is one of the gurus who put in a CB for Shemar Turner to Bama so it looks like he sees Iwunnah as the backup plan. Spiegelman went to Lakeview Centennial recently so maybe he has some insight there. If so, will be interesting to see what he says about Wheaton

When athletes who play DL are available, smart teams take them and coach them up. Lamar Houston, Steve McMichaels and Brian Robison come to mind.

Speaking of that, Mike Roach now saying its us and aggy for Turner (not Bama)

Also, here is another athletic DT who, like Iwunnah, might be well-suited for a spread conference like ours

Here is something from Ian Boyd on Johnson

Malcolm Johnson Jr, St. Stephens & St. Agnes (VA) (2021)
How he fits at Texas: Johnson is a good reflection of the "every man a deep threat" philosophy that Mike Yurcich is bringing to the Texas offense. The Longhorns want receivers that can win over the top and Johnson, with his 10.50 100m speed, is very good at that. He'd translate very easily to the slot. In Virginia ball he often takes an inside release and still gets back outside because he's so much faster than everyone else. He'll need to refine his game quite a bit at Texas to play outside but could have a pretty quick impact in the slot simply because he has such elite speed. He's probably a laser 4.4 40 guy.

The other athlete I would like to see on the DL. This guy's highlights video is a must see. Your jaw will drop, guanteed.

We are going to have an advantage in recruiting in the area of individual branding, which will matter once they start getting paid for their images

This is not Spiegelman but Roach on teammates Wheaton and Iwunnah. The next Rivals update on Wheaton might be more interesting

Camar Wheaton ... Despite rumors of the five-star running back shutting things down soon, I was told that Wheaton is still narrowing things down and not in any sort of hurry to end the process. “Camar is a different cat,” the source said. “He’ll commit when he’s ready and on nobody else’s timetable.” This source didn’t offer much different than I reported on Monday night. The biggest thing I got is more confirmation that this race really seems to be coming down to Texas and Oklahoma.

Texas is also still in contact with Wheaton’s teammate Ikechukwu Iwunnah. I’m told Iwunnah loves what he’s hearing from Mark Hagen and really just wants to see the campus. With visits up in the air this fall, it’s likely that Iwunnah will need to take a self-guided visit if he wants to see what the campus has to offer. The staff is doing what they can in the way of virtual tours, but nothing beats seeing things in person.

Here is Roach on Regis

I checked in on La Porte defensive tackle Albert Regis as well. It sounds like this race could come down to Texas and (aggy), but information from Regis is tough to come by. He’s pretty quiet, and I’m told he’s tough for even college coaches to reach at times. From what I can tell, Texas is very serious about Regis while he appears to be one of several options for the Aggies. I’m told the communication with Texas has been promising, but there’s no overwhelming sense of confidence.
The first highlight is pretty funny. The DL highlights do not start until ~4:45

We are not looking bad on the DL at all
We have Ja'Tavion Sanders and Jordan Thomas in the orange house already, with Derrick Harris a spin down candidate.
If we can add to that Shemar Turner and Albert Regis (and maybe Ikechukwu Iwunnah) and we have something very nice going forward. Especially when paired with last years DL class of Collins, Broughton and Dorbah.
Herman has his faults but, from my perspective, we must credit him for recognizing the serious issues we had on both the OL and DL and acting to shore up the talent and depth on both. We have come a long way from where we were just 3-4 years ago. I doubt many Texas fans would argue otherwise.

I am not sure how (if) the season will play out from a wins and losses standpoint, but Turner should see some good things from the d-line this year. I think we will see some Brian Orakpo kind of numbers from Ossai this year - if you consider Ossai as a d-lineman (slated at the jack position). Coburn and Sweat should eat up blockers and give the ends more chances to get sacks and TFLs. Ossai is already getting national recognition and I bet Coburn will late this year or next year. So overall I think Turner should like what he sees on the Texas d-line. Plus those guys are young and he can play with them at Texas.

JMO - but I don't think Ossai or Coburn will be around next year. Besides the seniors projected to start, I think we end up losing 4 juniors on the defensive side of the ball. Sterns, one of our corners, Coburn and Ossai. On the offensive side I think we lose Ingram and maybe Eagles. When I say lose, I mean to the NFL draft.

That should tell you how optimistic I am about this season. Outside of injuries, the only weakness this team has is the right side of the offensive line. It is more of an unknown than a weakness.
