2021-2022 Season

B12 FOY: If it's not A. Moore, my hat's off to the player who beats her. I would like to compare her robust physique and her physical game to a former player for clarity, but we have not had a front-court player of her quality....period. A total handful with the ball in her hands when she drives to the basket.

Quickest: Rori. If you want scoring out of your PG, you'll go with Rori. Give her 25 minutes with 15 for Ashley. Rori was having trouble with cramps in both legs in the 2nd half in the hamstring area, but nobody seemed to be concerned.

There will be so many contributors on this team...an embarrassment of riches, especially compared to last year.

P.S. edit: With all due respect to Lauren, who will get plenty of minutes, Moore and Gaston sharing the front court will be difficult to defend. And Lauren is more polished than anytime last year.

P.P.S. edit: If you were designing a post player from scratch, you would end up with Femme. Tallest player on team and Goldilocks physique: not too trim and not too robust. Needs a bit more time to develop skills.

Just based on what you saw today what would be your prediction of the starting 5?

While I certainly appreciate the recap, I wish we could have some info on the others as well as far as who looked good!!! Thanks!!!

I think the spirit of your question is who will start for Stanford (11/14), as opposed to Oklahoma Baptist (11/4). In that case I would guess:
Rori
Joanne
Aaliyah
Lauren
Deyona/Audrey

Btw, Kobe and Aliyah bring some 3-pt range, as does Kyndall. Aliyah played some PG and looked good doing it.

Latasha needs a bit of time to adjust to the speed of the college game, but she can move. She and Deyona both wear a knee brace. Latasha is tall, but not robust.

To add onto Zig’s recap, the most improved player was Shay Holle. In fact, she’ll likely be a starter and IMO it’s warranted. I wanted to see more of Kendall Hunter. She made the most of her limited minutes by scoring about 15 points. By my count she only missed one or two shots, all long range three pointers. She has a very quick release. She was our best scoring threat from the outside (other than JAT).

Gaston looks to be 100% healthy. She is so athletic, versatile and smooth. I agree with Zig, she and Moore will be a difficult combo once they get enough reps. Latasha will also be a big contributor once she is 100% healthy and adjusts to the college game.

The format of the scrimmage was 2Q’s of Orange White intra-squad competition then 3Q’s between the team and the men’s practice squad. Each quarter was 10 minutes. Overall we look like we are in good shape.

Thanks Zig! I always love your posts! Glad you could make the scrimmage and keep us in the loop.

Aliyah Matharu did pretty well too. Quick as a cat, hit 2 or 3 threes. Kobe is built like a brick and a good defender. She also has a nice three and a good step back jumper. Aaliyah Moore is certainly bulkier than she appeared in her HS pictures. She is going to be good, not afraid to take it right to the bucket. Kendall didn’t play much but she showed flashes of what she can do. We have several guards that can handle the ball well and defend well. I also thought that Shay looked like she had improved a lot since last year.

Thanks for all the reports. I was so happy to read that no one was held out of the scrimmage (for health/injury reasons). Can't remember the last time that occurred.

I was at the scrimmage for 2.5 quarters and then had to leave to take care of something. Here's my perspective.

First half when it was inter-squad, I was thinking the following:
1. Wow, they're going to run the opposing teams into the ground. It was just fast-fast-fast for both the orange and white team. It's pretty obvious that white was 1st team and orange was 2nd.
2. A few times I was thinking, "How do I describe Rori Harmon? A more solidly built Brooke McCarty? A more confident Brooke McCarty? A more.......?"
3. At one point, Ashley running point for the Orange team barked at a teammate (Kobe?) who was just standing at one of the corners to MOVE and she broke her trance and hustled to another part of the court to help out
4. As someone else said, was surprised that Aaliyah is more...uhhh, solid bodied than HS video seems to show
5. But a the both teams were literally zipping up and down the court, I thought, "Mmmmm, where's the patented full court press on inbound? Hmmm. Maybe they're not trying because it's inter-squad and they know what they can already do?"
6. But in the second half when the played the men's scout team, they didn't try that at all
7. Caught Danny Davis' eye as well

8. No one in this group mentioned the total lack of full court defense?
9. A lot of hustle under the basket, but there's not a dominant player with the "gimme THAT" attitude.
10. Joanne thankfully doesn't have to PG this year. Definitely Rori's job. She was born for it.
11. My opinion but Deyona looked a step slow. Lauren is still Lauren. She gets down to the other side eventually, but she's not gotten any faster

Added: At the beginning of the 3rd quarter, when it was obvious that the men were going up against the women, my son said, "Well looks like they're going to lose to the boys". I looked at him shocked and thought he was joking. I said, "These are practice players. They're going to crush them". And then I proceeded to see no solid defense the boys take the lead. Then we had to leave. Anyone know if the gals ever overtook the guys?

Great reports. I don't see much to disagree about. I am looking forward to a lot of fun watching this team develop. The young players (all of them!) show so much promise but also their immaturity. So, expect to see the experienced players starting and carrying the load early with the exceptions of Rori Harmon (likely to start) and Aaliyah Moore (will play a lot). Hope at least a few of the new players are ready to contribute more as the season goes on.

About that defense. I'd say that is a big reason we may not see as much of the new comers early as we fans might like. That may well determine who gets the minutes playing the post position and it is not clear to me, at least, who that is going to be. Gaston started against the men. Vic tried them all.

Funny seeing Vic start getting worked up during the scrimmage against the men. Stomping his feet. Yelling at the players on the court. Officials did their best, but the women still lost by one.

Props to racerx. That was informative. Anyone have thoughts on why they didn't press more? Isn't that a Vic hallmark? Most posters here liked Rori, but Danny Davis (not sure who he is) pointed to Ashley. Sounds like Ebo is not going to be that stopper down low.
One thing I'm curious about. Sifting through the endless repeats on LHN, I'm wondering why they weren't able to broadcast this.

WOW......This freshman class is going to do big things. Hunter is a pure shooter and will be a big contributor...

I’ve never been more excited for a recruiting class like I am this class! I was extremely excited for the Chasity, Boothe class that never blossoming; but this excitement here is on a completely different level

Could be that he doesn't want any future opponents (like Stanford) who might have had a scout at the game (does women's hoops do that?) gain knowledge about the kind of presses the team plans to run early in the season. Even against our first opponent before Stanford, I don't expect Vic to show all his cards since that game will be televised and provide film for Stanford to dissect.

Plus, Destiny Littleton.

I think a huge difference between that freshman class and the 2021 freshmen class are the roles Rori, Kyndall, Aaliyah, and Latasha are expected to play (based on having only 2 returning starters) their first season at Texas. The other difference is probably the commitment to physical conditioning and fitness of this freshman class compared to the other class (specifically Littleton and Boothe).

So, much more excitement and optimism for this 2021 class of freshmen in season one.

The key, unlike with that class is going to be patients. Especially now and days with the transfer portal and more and more people in the players ears. But as you mentioned the circumstances are a little different with this class. Most of the attention has been on Rori and rightfully so, but Kyndall is a player that can score at all three levels as we saw in the clips.

What I like about her more than anything offensively is that she can not only score off the dribble but she is just as good without the ball in her hands. You can run her off of screens which is something I would like to see more from Vic like he did at Miss st. with players like Blair, Morgan Willam, and also Vivans.

mark my words this freshman class will have at least 4 AA honors of some sort by the end of the season. This season can’t happen any sooner!

It was physically impossible to play full court press in the first half with so few players on each team. You need to be 8-9 players deep to make that frenetic pace work. In the fifth quarter against the men when trying to close the scoring gap, they tried it on the last few possessions. The men easily beat it, but the women still made a nice comeback.

(If you ever wondered how athletically equal the women are becoming to the men, it was answered in the scrimmage. A couple of those guys were twice as fast as our players. And these are "second-tier" athletes that were good HS players, but not so good as to earn college ships. Fortunately, it is a team game which counteracts some of the disparity. We owe these guys our thanks for helping prep the team for the Stanford's of women's basketball.)

Davis, a Statesman sports reporter, may not have seen Rori. Sometime in the second half when he arrived, Rori's minutes were limited due to cramps and Aliyah picked up the point to help out.

To add to Zig's response, the men's practice squad started playing in the 2nd half after our team had already played a full half of fast, physical basketball. The men had a team of 15-20 players that they kept platooning in/out for the remainder of the scrimmage. In the final quarter, most of our starters were on the bench when the team started making a comeback and closing the gap on the men's team (primarily due to Kendall Hunter's scoring streak).

IMO, the objective of the scrimmage was so Vic could tinker with different player combinations and practice running offensive and defensive sets rather than opening up the entire playbook for the first public scrimmage of the season. Since 7 out of 13 team members are new to Tx WBB, they have not yet developed team chemistry. Even though our incoming freshmen were highly ranked coming out of high school, there is still a big adjustment from high school basketball to college competition. Conversely, the Stanford team that we meet for our third game of the season, lost one starter from their NCAA championship team. I expect our team to show a lot of potential but they will have rough spots along the way that are attributed to our youth and inexperience. In typical Vic fashion, we should show steady improvement as the season progresses.

I see potentially 3 losses before Big XII play. I know it's going to cause some on this board to proclaim the end of the world , what's going to be needed is patience.
You don't remake this team with what , half the team being new? Not only new but what are being counted on as being the biggest contributors being freshmen. There will be bumps and even an ugly game or two along the way.
I'm expecting this team by the end of the year to be as dangerous as last year's team was.
