2020 Recruiting - WBB

High School stats are highly iffy. Especially since players are asked to do things their team needs or doesn’t need. But there trends. Perhaps Turner is most well-rounded as she is high in all 4 areas. M Gordon is strong in points, rebounding and assists. Andrews is really strong in 3 areas but not in rebounding. D Kelly only shows up in points. There are other observations there but any and all could be suspect. High level.... Turner, Andrews and Gordon seem my favorites.

Still hoping Deja re-commits to Texas as she has a lot of very good skills, and her Dad, Darren was one of my favorite Horns hoopsters.

Her scoring, unsurprisingly, has dropped significantly at Duncanville compared to what she was scoring in San Antonio. But, with Gusters not playing, I thought her scoring would increase from where it was earlier in the season. I believe Duncanville still won their district, but they don't seem to have a team comparable to what they had in recent seasons.

I have never seen Kelly play. Hope to in the playoffs. The dynamics of Duncanville’s roster certainly has been in transition with graduation, Kelly joining, and Gusters leaving mid-season. They have FIVE losses this year. That is usually 3-4 seasons of losses. They are ranked third in the area 6-A DMNews and still could get to state. Cedar Hill and DeSoto are one and two. The Metromess has really strong teams but no super team this year. Top 10 teams have 3-8 losses with LD Bell and Gordon ranked 10th with the lowest at 3. Ranking 1-10 is Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Skyline, Allen, Prosper(Oliver), Sachse, Plano (Merritt), McArthur (Andrews), LD Bell(Gordon). Don’t sleep on Sachse.....they are good. The second round of playoffs could be really tough and third round brutal. I will find a good (hopefully) first round and report. In 5-A, Mansfield Timberview is leaps above anyone else at 34-1 and is my pick to win state. Mansfield Legacy (Turner) is ranked 7th at 25-8. I may try and see Legacy play if there is a good match-up early and close.

Jasmine Shavers is a 2021 from Mesquite Horn. She posted some pics of her visit to Texas Tech yesterday and Myra Gordon, Sarah Andrews and Hannah Gusters were in one of the pics.

Let that woman at Tech land a couple of top recruits... the Lady Raiders will be right back on the map. She's already got Lexi Gordon, I'm betting she gets sister Myra... and who knows what others that may draw.

Agreed brnkj. Despite their current record, the progress they are making seems quick and visible, IMO.

Meh, the Gordon’s are nice players but I wouldn’t call either as game changing. I actually think the other transfer that they got Shug Dickson is better and will have the biggest impact. Now, if she was able to somehow get Sarah Andrews, Harmoni Turner, or even a player that I think is underrated like a Jewel Spears now you’re talking.

Well....the basketball gods have answered my yearning for a good first round playoff game close by. So Tuesday at Richardson HS, Sachse(30-4) will play Plano East (22-9) in a first round game. Sachse was a state semi-finalist last year, returns 4 starters, and is ranked No 5 in state. Plano East is number 4 seed in their district but plays Plano(defending state champs), Prosper, Allen and Plano West twice each. So I am going to babysit my twin 18 month grandsons Tuesday afternoon, then walk a block from my daughter's house to the high school and watch this game. I'll report back as Sachse has a UTEP commit and Plano East has a TCU commit but it more is an opportunity to see is Sachse has what it takes to get back to state.

There is a high probability that the second round will include Irving McArthur (S Andrews) versus DeSoto (No. 3 in state and No 2 in Metroplex). Mansfield Timberview (No 1 in state and No 5 in nation) will have to beat Amarillo in the region final to get to state. Amarillo is defending state champion; however, Timberview beat Amarillo earlier in the year by nine. The DMNews had a detailed write-up today about the playoffs and discussing teams, players and projecting state winners. In 6-A the winner was projected to be Cedar Hill over Jersey Village. In 5-A it was Mansfield Timberview over Manvel. In 4-A it was Canyon over Dallas Lincoln. Fun times.

Shay Holle's Westlake team will play Canyon at Hays/Buda High tomorrow at 6 PM. I may try to make that game since it's close to my South Austin hood. Got the info from a mysanantonio link from their website, but it's subscription based, and I can't see much of it either.

I must be going crazy but on the UIL website it says that Canyon plays Dalhart on Monday in Amarillo. I thought Westlake was 6-A and Canyon was 4-A so couldn't be playing each other? Is NB Canyon (opponent vs Westlake) different than Canyon? Might want to check the schedule again. Would like a scouting report on Holle if you go.

I missed the NB part of the Canyon report. Sorry. Will definitely let y'all know if I make it to Westlake's game tomorrow.

Canyon is in Texas Panhandle, near Amarillo. . NB Canyon is New Braunfels Canyon. They are different schools.

UIL girls basketball: First-round playoff schedule
not much info in the AAS.
Westlake vs. New Braunfels Canyon, 6 p.m., Hays HS

some snippets about Holle & Westlake.
Which players can carry their team to a few playoff wins?
If you like defense, watch junior Shay Holle of Class 6A No. 15 Westlake, a three-year starter who just committed to Texas and can guard any position on the court.
OK, we know Hendrickson is good. Who else has a chance to reach state?

Westlake is the only other area team ranked in Class 6A, and the Chaps have the athleticism, length and defensive mindset to make a run.

Are some teams’ roads to San Antonio smoother than others?

Nothing comes easy in a playoff bracket that features seven rounds, but Class 6A’s Region IV looks particularly rugged for Westlake and Lake Travis with three teams — San Antonio Clark, San Antonio Brandeis and Judson — ranked in the top 10.

My niece’s team made the 1A playoffs again but got a tough seed. If they win their first round game, they get to face Nazareth in the 2nd round.

I know this isn’t a 2020 recruiting note - just a proud uncle interjecting in the middle of a playoff discussion.

I absolutely love the 1-A and 2-A games. The kids typically are team oriented and the entire town comes to support. Congrats to your niece. Nazareth is a tough match for any team.

The playoffs are what I love. The finality of it is so captivating. I’ll never forget the last play-off game my daughter had and watching her and 2 teammates on her AAU team walk off the court. Beaten by another AAU teammate and that bittersweet moment. The 8 years of practices/games/travel/etc. all over in a second. The kids took it better than my wife and I did. The girls are off to the next phase of life and your life changes drastically as well. The playoff games.....the kids play harder......they know. I simply love to watch how the players/teams/parents react.

You missed my SPECULATIVE point.

One surprise in Metroplex last night........LD Bell (Gordon) as a No. 1 in district lost to Ft Worth Trimble Tech by 63-48. Tech was a 4th place in district. Gordon had 24. Plano won a close game against Garland Lakeview with Merritt with 20. The Colony beats Colleyville Heritage by 4 with Spears having 25. Lots of blowouts since No. 1 vs No. 4 district games.

UIL orders internal investigation at Duncanville
UIL tells Duncanville ISD to investigate girls' basketball program for possible recruiting violations

DUNCANVILLE, Texas — On the eve of the girls' high school basketball playoffs, there's an unfamiliar air of uncertainty surrounding at state powerhouse Duncanville.

The UIL, the state's governing body for high school sports has ordered Duncanville ISD to investigate possible recruiting violations surrounding a player that transferred into the district to play basketball under head coach Kathy Self-Morgan.

"There will be a thorough investigation of Coach [Self-Morgan]," said UIL executive committee chairman Mike Motheral.

The reason the UIL called for the probe is complicated. Another UIL investigation, determining the eligibility of former Duncanville player Hannah Gusters who transferred to MacArthur High school, brought up evidence that raised concerns.

At a hearing last Wednesday, Gusters was denied her appeal to gain immediate eligibility after transferring. There were text message exchanges included in the evidence packets that were brought forth during that investigation that have raised questions about the recruitment of Duncanville guard Deja Kelly, who moved in from San Antonio.

"It is to be real. The report is to be thorough," said Motheral at the hearing. "And if there are findings we're going to have an expectation that you folks are first going to take care of some issues."

In an appearance on the High School Sports Special Sunday, before the allegations became public, Self-Morgan laid out the blueprint for postseason success.

"We continue to face any adversity that comes our way and pull up our pants and go hard and get after it," she said.

Duncanville owns 10 state titles, the Pantherettes one of the state's premier programs, but will all that tradition and hardware be tarnished?

WFAA Sports reached out to Duncanville ISD and they confirmed the investigation is underway but had no further comment.

They've got 30 days to finish it. Hanging in the balance, a chance to prove this is not another example of the ugly underbelly of Texas high school sports.

Saw this article earlier this morning, too. Lots to speculate about with this situation... Gusters, Kelly, transfers, protests, investigstions... sounds as though it could get real messy (or already is) and may impact recruiting at the next level.

Thought the reason that Kelly transferred was because her mom got a job in the area. Guess that is one thing they will be looking at.

Waste of time.

My niece scored 10 tonight in the first round game, a 56-37 victory. Now they have to play Nazareth Friday in Nazareth. I spent a few years in Nazareth as a kid so I’m very familiar with how tough a game she and her team have in front of them.

I made the Sachse vs Plano East game tonight. Left with 3 minutes to go with Sachse up about 20. Sachse will be tough. The have a really good junior point guard, good players at all positions, height, depth, play as a team, disciplined, great coaching. Not surprising as they are ranked No. 5 in state with 4 players returning from state semi-finalist. The only hitch that I see is they don’t have that star. But they might not need it. Plano East was just a good team. The TCU signee(T Diggs) was held in check. I was disappointed in the Plano East coach(she got a technical but deserved several more). She didn’t handle the beat down well. The game was essentially over after one quarter as Sachse’s press was tough and they were up about 15 after one. The trapping full court zone press is really good. They are disciplined and well coached in half court offense, but they get a lot of points with the press.

Well.....How Bout This Apple? Duncanville beaten by 11 by a good South Grand Prairie team. 71-60. Bad 2 days for KS-M. Irving McArthur by 1 over Southlake Carroll.

I'm not really surprised. I saw that possibility coming when I looked at the playoff bracket. SGP beat them earlier in the season by one point. What's kind of shocking though is HOW they beat them, outscoring Duncanville 30-13 in the fourth quarter. :e-eyes:

McArthur's run will probably come to an end this weekend as they play Desoto. The DFW Metro has some really tough teams this year.
