2020 Recruiting - Football

Maybe so. Then again, it may take them (both USC and UCLA) a number of years to get this fixed. We definitely should cherry pick top talent where it's available, and now it's available in So. Cal.

Related topic--am I wrong to consider Arizona HS football (at least the greater Phoenix/Scottsdale area) like an extension of the high quality So. Cal HS football. Per capita, Arizona seems to be putting out a lot of top notch talent in recent years, and many of them are interested in UT.

That is like saying Oklahoma schools are an extension of North Texas schools. They have a few talented kids, but for the most part a few steps below. You can find a few good players in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, and Denver. In my opinion, if you add all those cities up, you get Houston level talent.

I really like the players we've got from Arizona and expect there will be more top tier guys to come. Not only are USC and UCLA in a weakened state, but so are U. of Arizona and ASU. As for the creme of the AZ crop--like the So. Cal guys, they're there for the picking.

Top 10 for Mansfield Timberview CB Jalen Kimber (6'1,170)
We offered last month (but I think he is orig from Ill and is a ND lean for now)

Four-star North Carolina WR Mike Wyman randomly followed me on Twitter and told me that he has reached out to Texas WRs coach Drew Mehringer. Apparently he has family in the state and has high interest. He's a national Top 150 recruit, so one to keep an eye on.

Mike Wyman, Dudley, Wide Receiver

Yeh, I know you're right, but that doesn't mean I have to like it! I'd like to see the Longhorns get first choice and let the zeroes and osu pick from the leftovers.
Agree. The last thing we need is talented, pissed off kids from Texas playing in the RRS and Big XII championship game on the other side.

not for 3 of the last 4 years according to 247.

It appears (at least to me) that the State of Arizona is a hot spot for recruits now, more than it has been. With U of A, ASU, USC, and UCLA all down, the top-notch talent is there for the picking. According to Rivals, Jake Smith wasn't even the best player in Arizona last year! Personally, I'm in the Gatorade camp on that ranking; Gatorade says J.S.=POY. (and if Jake's not POY, then Whittington is.)

Not sure if this is just a blip or a trend, but we're in a good position to keep capitalizing on it.

North Texas recruiting relative to the entire state...
2016 - 3 of the top 5, 4 of the top 10 (Houston - 2, 3)
2017 - 2 of the top 5, 4 of the top 10, 7 of the top 15 (Houston 3, 5, 6)
2018 - 0 of the top 10 (Houston 3, 8)
2019 - 2 of the top 5, 5 of the top 10, 9 of the top 15 (Houston 1, 2, 2)

In terms of 247 composite rankings, North Texas has been as much if not more talent-laden than Houston 3 of the last 4 years.

I do trust that our coaches might know more than recruiting agencies, but if we're looking at stars...It's not accurate to say there's less talent in North Texas.

Both DFW and the greater Houston area have 6 and a 1/2 million people a piece. They are both going to have years where they have better talent and they both are going to have better talent than just about anywhere else in the state.

Mack will grab him.

Glad this isn't a replay of the old pissing match about which area has the best recruits--Houston or Dallas. I don't think anyone can credibly deny that Greater Houston and the DFW area are the strongest recruiting areas in the state (although E. Texas and Cen. Texas are also very strong). It varies year-to-year. Some years Greater Houston is stronger. Other years the DFW area is stronger.

When considering such things, some people lump the Golden Triangle (Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange area) in with Greater Houston, some lump it in with East Texas, while others consider it its own separate recruiting realm...

You'd win every college game you ever played if you had your picks out of Harris County. Nowhere else in the country is even in the parking lot of the ball park.

Yeah I dont consider the Beaumont area Houston at all. Its too far. Katy, Woodlands, Galveston are about as far as I consider.

Well, not if your player development and coaching is lousy.

Of course Harris Co. is but one of the Greater Houston area counties (Galveston, Ft. Bend, Brazoria, Montgomery, Chambers, etc. come to mind). Lots of top players out in the far-flung suburbs.

Lol, that is some serious hyperbole and not even remotely true. You take all the best players from Houston and I'll take all the best players from the United States and lets see who wins.

You take all the best players from Houston and I'll take all the best players from Florida and lets see who wins.

California, Louisiana.

Houston has a lot of talent, but don't get carried away.

That wasn't my intent at all. Someone did make the Houston assertion, which is why included comparative numbers.

What I post about on this topic fairly regularly is the need to focus more recruiting attention in north texas. that we do generally poor there in the last few years. and that there is enough talent there to make the effort, even if the competition is more fierce.
