2018 Roster

That's what I keep wondering. Why can't Shane be taught how to run the offense? That's a learned skill. Whereas, throwing accuracy is kinda like speed. Yes, you can teach it a little bit, but 80% of it you either have it or you don't. I'm just not sure Sam ever will.
He knows the offense better than Sam. However, Sam (as well as Rising) has the physical attributes that Herman wants for a QB. It is a strawman competition.

I'm not advocating one QB over the other, but it makes me wonder about TH's decision making. You simply don't move the ball down the field and score TD's w/o pinpoint accuracy against good defenses. A great one dimensional running game just puts up big numbers against the directional schools of the world and then flounders against a great defense.

I certainly wish the best for Sam, but from what I've seen he's just not ever going to be accurate enough to consistently move the ball down the field against great defenses like Colt did, or like D Watson, or even like Bakerfield did as much as I can't stand mentioning his name. I doubt Sam could make most of the throws Shane made in the video posted by Godz, and that was Shane's freshman year.

,,,,, but the play-calling was no help last year either. Tim Beck's play calling highlighted deficiencies instead of hiding them.,,,,.

We have so many bad plays in our arsenal it is hard to pick just one favorite, but the one that consistently raised enough of a verbal reaction from me to make the dog leave the room was the rollout to the short side with no receiver in the area in front of our QB, not even a back or TE. No one! We ran this repeatedly. The playcallers are lucky they are not in range of my dog because she now hates this call too. And she is a real *****.

I think our lack of an offensive line is the root cause for Shane's problems with the offense. If Shane has time to pass, he can be deadly accurate. But he's had very poor protection for both years here. If the line shows progress and we get a running game, Shane will look a lot better out there.
This^^
True Frosh year.
Shane was slingin it with accuracy and confidence.

We ought to do Beck a favor and demote him to fan so he can enjoy college football again.
And hire a real offensive coordinator to coach our team.
Win Win.

I personally have no problem with Shane being the starter. I can see us winning at least 9 games. I just have a problem with our tugboat offense. I'd like to see more of an offense that uses the whole field in the style of the NE Patriots throwing to scatback receivers who turn 4 yard receptions into 15-20 yard receptions.

:arrow-up: The entire offense went through this plus lost people who decided not to fit in. The wrong HC destroys several seasons; not just one.

:arrow-up: The entire offense went through ....

There are only 3 other players on offense who have seen as much as Heard.
Andrew Beck
Armanti Foreman
Elijah Rodriguez
I think that's it

On defense, the 5th years are John Bonney, Chris Nelson, Jason Hall and poor Edwin Freeman

The lack of any continuity since 2010 is astounding, for both sides of the ball.
We have yet to have a Coordinator make 3 seasons in a row on either side of the ball since GDGD or Will Muschamp. (Unless you want to count Vance Bedford who got fired a couple of game into his third season. )

Think about that.

Here's hoping Orlando does not get hired away and that Tim Beck figures something / anything out on offense. It won't matter how much talent we accrue, if we can't get consistent coaching.

You missed the point Joe. The entire program and everyone connected with the program takes a hit with the wrong HC.

Foreman and Hall did not reshirt. They’re gone.

Maybe I did. But I think the search for an error overlooked the point of the original pasted section from the article, which was about Heard. And how he in particular has gone through in inordinate amount of different position coaches, more than anyone else on this team. I still think that is correct. But if it's not, I am confident someone will point it out.

I cannot say I was overjoyed by the OL's performance in the game tape. To the extent one guy can pull an entire position group together, this is the guy. Have to hope the football gods allow him to be healthy for a full season. I say we are overdue for a positive break on the O-line.

Glad you posted this, Joe. My first reaction to it was simply that I appreciate Heard and think he deserves a medal of honor. I'd be pleased if he has a great year (something I feel is possible) and gets a shot at the next level...something I also believe to be possible. If picking a poster-boy for the turmoil of the last few years I'm not sure who else would be a better pick....other than a team pic of all the guys who bolted perhaps.

And, as far as I know, he kept a great attitude through it all. What a guy.
