2014 6-5 after big road win to get bowl eligible

Lest we forget that in 2014 in the 11th game of the season the Horns won their third game in a row as they posted a 28-7 win over OSU in Stillwater to move to 6-5 and gain bowl eligibility. Suddenly the whole tenor of the 2014 season looked like it could end on a positive note and Strong's first season could have an entirely different feel then it had seemed to be heading toward. TCU promptly carved the Horns up followed by a second butt whipping in the bowl game and it was all downhill from there. Now in 2017 the Horns have almost the same scenario, a big road win, bowl eligibility and a chance to rewrite the narrative for this year by winning their last game and the bowl. Hopefully this time it is a different last two games.

That is a very good point FW Horn. Do you know TH's personal email address, he needs to make sure the team stays hungry and motivated, playing with passion. They cannot celebrate this and rest, they have two games to win! This season is FAR from over!

FWIW, I see TH as a great motivator and practice coach, maybe not as good at in game decisions at this point. So, keeping them from resting on their laurels is in his wheel house. He has to sell that message hard. These are kids! Kids rest/party when they think they can. He will have to turn them away from that. Be a disciplinarian. This would be a good week for him to kick some ***.

Every time Alabama plays a patsy, Saban is on fire during the press conference. He is probably not fun to play for that week. Hopefully, TH is doing that. I think he does way more so than Charlie ever did. That is why I think we're in good hands.

And not an SMU, isn't that who the Cougs lost to w Herman on a roll? I don't think we'll be anything but sky high. My fear is that they, TT, won't drop passes as we have been fortunate to have had happen in our wins. Seems every opposing offense has had one sure TD dropped. I'm hoping for at least one more pic six by our DBs to close the regular season.

i think this will be a test for Herman. We are clearly the better team, and we should win. We match up well with ttu.

We are more physical; our D line should dominate; our D backs should be good enough as long as our line applies pressure.

Our run game should control the game with Conner in there; Sam doesn't have to do much, other than avoid turnovers, complete just enough passes to keep ttu honest on defense.

Our punter should keep field position in our favor.

So we will see if TH can keep the momentum going and not allow the team to be un focused. I'm thinking he will be up to the task. :hookem2:

So many similarities between both of these coaches in year 1. Fingers crossed season 2 doesn’t fall in line.

So many similarities when both were hired.
Coordinators on Championship teams.
Successful at first HC job at lower tier school.
Hired to coach the Horns back to prominence.
First year success about the same at this point.
I believe we we win out to finish 8-5. (barring injury)
I do NOT believe the records will be close to the same for the second year.
Please, please, please.....

Moondog,

Don't worry all is going to be well. TH is not CS. Yes they have similar backgrounds. But I think TH is more like Urban Meyer and Nick Saban than CS is. CS is a players coach, he did not hold them accountable on the subjects involving playing with passion and being motivated. Now on respect, drugs, and off the field, that was a different story. CS is a good man, I respect him as most of us do. He just did not have the fire I see in TH. That is what this boils down to.

There are a lot of erie similarities. As far as Thanksgiving goes, 2017 Tech is nowhere near 2014 TCU, so I do not think the similarities will be relevant for this game. The similarities will be relevant if we do not finish strong overall including getting blown out in our bowl.

Breaking down the wins:
2014:
#24 West Virginia (7-6) 33-16
@ Oklahoma State (7-6) 28-7
@ Texas Tech (4-8) 34-13
North Texas (4-8) 38-7
@Kansas (3-9) 23-0
Iowa State (2-10) 48-45

2017:
@#24 WVU (7-4) 28-14
@ Iowa State (7-4) 17-7
Kansas State (6-5) 40-34 (2OT)
@ Baylor (1-10) 38-7
Kansas (1-10) 42-27
San Jose State (1-11) 56-0

And the losses:
2014:
#5 TCU (12-1) 10-48
#7 Baylor (11-2) 7-28
#12 UCLA (10-3) 17-20
@#11 Kansas State (9-4) 0-23
#11 OU (8-5) 26-31
BYU (8-5) 7-41
Arkansas (7-6) 7-31

2017:
#12 OU (10-1) 24-29
@#4 USC (10-2) 24-27 (2OT)
@ #10 TCU (9-2) 7-24
#10 Okie State (8-3) 10-13 (OT)
Maryland (4-7) 41-51

The only major difference is the 2017 has no 20+ point losses and the 2014 team had 5. If we finish 8-5 with a bowl win, the seasons can no longer be considered similar.

Have you ever given consideration that the reason we may end up with 7-8 wins is because of Tom Herman instead of 4-5 wins with another coach? The talent on this team is not talent for a serious run at anything.

Tom Herman didn't all of the sudden become a "bad coach" anymore than KK at Tech did. And As much as I don't want to admit it, AnM had the best team in the country w KK there his first year at the end of the year and could've beaten anybody in the country.

You don't hear that Tom Herman makes bad calls anywhere but on message boards. Not from other coaches, not from national media (that knows what they're talking about), and not from book makers in Vegas that know FAR more than any AP panel or playoff panel on who the best teams are.

And then consider that TH has wiped up the State in recruiting and will end up w a number 1 or 2 class. Those high school guys don't see the bonehead decisions kicked around here at all.

Galveston, like you, I'm all-in on Herman but in my judgment some of his decisions this season have merited scrutiny. And that opinion is not solely held by people on this board.

Herman came in somewhat cocky, and highly defensive. Anyone who doesn't agree with this assessment should rewatch some of the early pressers. Fortunately, he has softened recently as reality has set in.

Herman will win at Texas, and do so early and often. 2018 will be a very good year. But that shouldn't stop fans and the media from questioning him when appropriate to do so.

2017:
@#24 WVU (7-4) 28-14
@ Iowa State (7-4) 17-7
Kansas State (6-5) 40-34 (2OT)
@ Baylor (1-10) 38-7
Kansas (1-10) 42-27
San Jose State (1-11) 56-0
Wow! Our season looks less impressive to me after upon seeing in black and white that three (that would be 1/2) of our wins so far are against teams with a combined won-loss record of 3-31. Think about that.

I just got a sick feeling in my gut.

Easily beating them all is an improvement over losing to 2-10 Kansas (2015), 3-9 Iowa State (2016) and beating 2-10 Iowa State by 3 at home on a late deep pass (2014). We were doing so poorly the last 3 years, easily handling our worst opponents is improvement.

I agree with some of the sentiment here, but the 2014 team is very dissimilar to the 2017 version. The 2014 version had an ok defense but one of the worst offenses in the NCAA. We got whipped by anyone with a pulse, got shut out once, and we were almost shut out 4 other times. We are MUCH more balanced this year.

That 2014 version had 59 yards of total offense and 7 first downs against Arky in the bowl game. That's puke-worthy. This year, even with our O-line struggles, we could never throw the ball and double that yard total in the first quarter.

Ugh...Seriously, I had to take a break while writing this reply because I remember so many of those 2014 games. That offense was SO horrible. That was one of the worst offenses Texas has ever fielded. I guarantee that the 2014 offensive team ranking was the worst fielded by Texas in 30 years (maybe more).
