2012

Now I can turn my head to 2012 recruiting. At Mack's Feb. 1 news conference he talked about the coaching transition and what it means for recruiting. Basically he said that it put him behind for 2012 because the new staff needs time to get to know and evaluate players. I'm sure some Big 12 coaches are getting a laugh at hearing him complain that early recruiting is making it hard on UT.

Barring some attrition or players not panning out, I don't see any glaring holes for 2012. Depending upon whether Thompson stays a linebacker or spins down to end, we may need numbers at DE or LB. Plus we took only one WR this year after a stellar class in 2010. I guess we might see how much Harsin and Applewhite will choose three and four WR sets.

According to the Mayans, 2012 is a moot point.

If I have kept up correctly with all of the guys leaving the team, graduated and all here is a list of palyers at each position group plus I have also included the number of recruits signed in (). Example - 3QB (1) = 4 total

QB - 3 (1) Sr = 0
RB - 6 (2) Sr = 2
WR - 9 (2) Sr = 1
TE - 7 (1) - this is including Irby (there might have been a guy here that is no longer playing, I wasn't sure about D.J. Grant) Sr = 1
OL - 11 (5) - the first number is counting Kriegel Sr = 2
DL - 11 (3) - first number counting the rumored switch of Whaley to DE Sr = 1
LB - 6 (3) - this is including Tevin Jackson Sr = 2
DB - 9 (4) Sr = 3
ATH - 1 (Cobbs) and (1) Thompson
K - 2 Sr = 1

If I counted correctly that is 13 seniors. Obviously will be a small class unless I number of guys choose to go elsewhere or do something else.

87 unless I counted someone that is no longer playing.

Mack said the new coaches may not like the same players the previous coaches liked. I would like to see the recruiting slow down a little and that is the way 2012 will be. The Aggies have 6 for 2012 and Baylor has 2. Looks like the Aggies are getting all the players from Brenham

in years past, the program was like a scheduled well oiled machine. Same ole, same ole, stable, no turmoil. So now it is completely understandable that the 2012 recruiting class will get off to a slow start.

Mack spent the last 2 months interviewing coaches, hiring coaches and keeping the 2011 class in the fold.

Now, he and the coaches have 3 weeks before spring practice to figure out how to implement a new offense and a new defense.

Then on top of it, with so many new assistant coaches, the 2012 class has to be totally re-evaluated. It's almost like starting from scratch.

If we were having the same ole same ole offseason, the 2012 recruiting class would have been the focus of most of our coaches these past 6 weeks. Obviously, the program didn't have that luxury this year.

I gather 2012 recruiting intensity will pick up after Spring practice.

Damn, i bet those coaches are putting in the hours. There is a lot of **** to be done.

I seem to remember that Mack came in at the end of the 97 season and managed to put together a pretty decent class. I'm not worried.

It has been reported that one of consultant Dick Tomey's recommendations was to slow down the early recruiting process to get a better feel for later developing players. If so, the need for Mack and the other coaches to catch up to recruiting this year would dove-tail well with this recommendation.

Personally I see this as a great opportunity to expand our national recruiting presence. Next year could be the perfect time to do that.

First, we're behind the curve on 2012 in-state recruits who will have established relationships with other Texas and Big 12 schools. We can still get some of the top ones but probably not as many as usual.

Secondly, OOS recruits who are looking at schools around the country probably don't have ties to any single program or coaching staff close to home. That's why they're looking. In the past we wouldn't recruit these guys unless they were willing to pay their own way to come in for a visit. There have numerous others who have indicated an interest in Texas that we really haven't pursued. Surely we can afford to fly them in for an official visit.

Obviously our success rate will be much lower. But if we go after 15-20 top national recruits I think we would land 3 or 4. Seems to me it's worth a try.

According to Mel Gibson's Apocalypto, Christianity made the Mayans a moot point.

And speaking of California, Harsin ought to be good for scoring a couple of surfer dudes a year.

Dirty, Texas got one from Oklahoma this year; one from Ohio last year; and generally can count on one from oklahoma, Louisiana or Arkansas every year. Anything more than that is very problematic and has not shown to be worth the time and effort. It is difficult recruiting in deep SEC space due to the recruiting issues there (i.e. lack of rules enforcement); difficult getting the kids off the beach on the west coast; and getting the good kids from Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Viper ... so USC, Tennessee, Notre Dame can recruit in Florida or New Jersey but we will not succeed? WTF You may have to work a bit harder and spend a bit more money. WE MAKE OOS RECRUITS PAY THEIR WON WAY???? (is this true?)

There should be no problem if we tripled our OOS recruits (with Texas HS coaches) That would be between 3 and six. If they all are 5 stars or high 4 stars in need positions we might even win more games.

DO we really make OOS recruits pay their own way? If so, why? Does our athletic department not make enough money?

If Rick Barnes took this approach, our BB team might not be as good!!
