2008 World Series

The national media and frustrated fans have complained about the low-wattage Phillies-Rays matchup. I think it's refreshing to be able to watch teams whose storylines haven't been forced down our throats for years. Guess we'll just have to see how the games play out and maybe discover some great players we haven't seen much.

This series also flies in the face of the spending-spree approach to building a winner (Rays having one of the lowest payrolls, Phillies nowhere near the top). And it's also a slap in the face of mercenary free agents. The highest paid free agents on each team, counting the WS rosters only:

Phillies: Geoff Jenkins at $5.0 million
Rays: Chad Bradford at $3.5 million

If Philly wins, I better not hear that Rocky theme again. For crying out load, that was 1976. Let it die. If you must use a song, use Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John.

I'm rooting for the Rays. I like their team a lot, and I've been saying for years that MLB doesn't need a salary cap so that all teams can compete, it needs an idiocy cap.

And with an idiot owner like Vince Naimoli (sp?) and an incompetent front office led by idiot Chuck LaMar, TB was well over any reasonable idiocy cap for the first eight years of the franchise.

I'm surprised they're already in the World Series, but it's not surprising that they're improved since the ownership and the front office changed just three years ago.

Why was the runner not called out for running inside the base line when the first baseman dropped the throw on the ball hit in front of the plate? That seemed obvious to me, but no one complained, etc.?

Technically they could have called Burrell out, but they let worse violations than that go all the time. I think if the throw had hit him in the back they may have been forced to make the call.

I don't think you can really argue that Burrell interfered with the throw -- Pena was standing on the base, and the throw came right to him, and he just dropped it.

If Kazmir had nailed Burrell in the back with the throw, they would have called him out.

I think Burrell blocked the view of the ball and that's why he dropped it. I was just surpised that the Rays didn't argue. I think most managers would have.

It was close. But any runner that takes off on a lefties first move, deserves to be picked off. It's a 100% guess on their part. The Rays scouting report that Hamels makes his mind up before he starts his delivery was wrong.

Baldelli did not swing, this is true (from the related thread). But Rollins DID get hit by a pitch which would have put two runners on, none out in the 9th. And then in Game 3, Moyer-Howard DID make a great play on Crawford that the ump admitted he missed.

These umps have been far too visible in this series.

Kellog already has missed 3 pitches. all on kazmir. shoulda been out of the first with no harm done but this ******* ump is just calling everything not over the middle of the plate a ball. ****.

Normally I pull for the National League team, but this is ridiculous! Why don't they just hand the trophy to the Phillies? I haven't seen this wide of a strike zone since Livan Hernandez had a 3 foot wide strike zone in 1997!

Thankfully, Tampa tied the game before the rain delay. There is some sort of justice!

Eventhough I want the Phillies to win, those pitches to Burrell were strikes. I'm beginning to think baseball should do like tennis and go to an "electronic" strike zone to take the human error out of it.

I'm a purist, and think we should keep the human element in the game. I actually don't have a problem with the ump calling those pitches to Burrell - balls. However, you must be consistent. He was giving the corners and beyond to Hamels, so he was being inconsistent, which drives players nuts!

This World Series has been difficult to watch. Tampa Bay has sucked. I don't know how they won any games this year. Eva Longoria handles bats better than Evan. I heard he was a great up-and-coming star.
Ugh. Tune in and watch baseball players freezing in cold rain, long rain delays, then they all swing for the fences and either connect or cluelessly flail at a pitch that goes into the dirt.
Yawn. Haven't made it through more than an inning or two yet.

I agree on "Rocky" flush it. However 'Philadelphia Freedom" needs to be flushed prior to 'Rocky". its the billie Jean King anthem yaaaqkkkkkkkk

Philly is lucky, but the Rays look terrible! Where is their defense? They look like a bunch of Little Leaguers out there...

By the way, last year's Colorado team would have beaten both of these teams. There's been a huge drop-off in MLB from last year to this year.

and BJ Upton has been the worst player in this world series. i swear he's grounded into 14 double plays. great ADLS and ACLS, but **** man he has SUCKED in this world series.
