ESPN ranked all of the national championship teams in the BCS era and we came out at #4.
1. 2001 Miami Hurricanes
2. 2004 USC Trojans
3. 1999 Florida State Seminoles
4. 2005 Texas Longhorns

5. 2000 oklahoma sooners
6. 1998 Tennessee Volunteers
7. 2003 LSU Tigers
8. 2006 Florida Gators
9. 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes
10. 2007 LSU Tigers

I think that's fair. We were the underdog in '05. The "canes, FSC and USC were #1 (I think for most of the season as well) the years they won.

#5 OU is overrated. They had a good D but the offense was lacking. I would put them on even par with 03 LSU and 06 UF. Though on this list would only drop them 2 to 3 spots.

03 Auburn was pretty good and they were undefeated and have a championship ring....why not put them on this list? If we did I would rank them at #7.

I wouldn't rate any of those teams ahead of us or VY. Plus if we had lost you can be sure the 2005 USC team would have been No. 1.

Our 2005 team could beat any of those teams above us 5 out of 10 times. The formula I created to come up with this percentage is correct about 80% of the time. No I'm not sharing.

Well the 01 Hurricanes and 04 Trojans were in the middle of their near dynasty runs. Both had what something like 35 game win streaks. Miami was shut out of 00 title game when I thought they should have been there instead of FSU....had that happened 00 OU may never have won (who knows) and thus wouldn't be on this list. 04 USC was shut out of the 03 title game when they should have gone, otherwise LSU may never have won their title and wouldn't be on this list. Both teams like their title game the following year or would have had legitimate argument to be called dynasties. Very similar circumstances for both of these teams.

I have to agree that 05 Texas team could have beaten either of those 2 teams. HIgher scoring offense, best player of all time at QB, fantastic OL, great defense with perhaps best secondary of Big12 era. My ranking would be #1 05 UT, #2 USC 04, #3 01 Miami....based on total team offense and defense, and on who they beat the year they won the title.

Texas football tok out the hole veitcong... we're still $5

hip hop hooray

That list sucks.
Until the 2005 Rose Bowl, that USC team was considered to be one of the best of all-time. We went undefeated and beat them.
All one has to do is look at the scores of both team's games for that season to see how far and above each team was.
For example, compare our (or USC's) results to, say, TN's '98 wins. TX only had one close game all year and that was all the HorseShoe.

By the way, that '98 Vol team was just about the luckiest national champion this side of Ohio State's '02 (I think it was '02) team.

To me, 2001 Miami and 2005 Texas almost have to take the top 2 spots. 2004 USC might have a case, but that's it.

something people in all these threads forget is variance. As a poker player, you realize that certain outcomes, although the most likely, are NOT guaranteed.

If Josh Heupel doesn't injure his bursa sac, maybe 2000 OU is mentioned as #1. Then again, if Torrance Marshall doesn't house an interception (thanks Mark Farris), OU doesn't even win the title. 2005 UT probably loses the game at tOSU 35% of the time or so. They probably lose to USC 45-50% of the time. That said, they were a GREAT team. My rankings would be:

1. 2001 Miami
2. 2005 Texas
3. 2004 USC
4. 2000 Oklahoma
5. 1999 FSU
6. 2003 LSU
7. 2002 OSU
8. 2006 UF
9. 2007 LSU
10. 1998 UT

That said, if 1998 UT played 2001 UM 100 times, it would not be 100-0 Miami. I do also think there is a pretty big dropoff from 2004 USC to 2000 OU.
