..and I want to take her someplace special. After 3 kids, grad school, and a big move, not to mention putting up with me for that long, she deserves it. Europe is not out of the question, but I know it is crowded as hell in the summer, not to mention 12 hour plane flights are not something we enjoy. We have been to the Pacific northwest and to New England. The south will be hotter than hell at that time. We would go in the last week of July, so what are some suggestions?

NB Longhorn,
There are a couple of suggestions that I have.

1) a cruise in Alaska. You can find these for a decent price usually, not too long a flight, and you can do part on a ship and part on land. I did this years ago and want to go back!

2) Banff- Canadian Rockies... great romantic places and nice hotels.

3) The Link My wife and I went here on our honeymoon (at the end of June, 2005), and it was WOW. I have never experienced the level of service and food for an all inclusive place. Now it is hot, I won't deny that, but for the beach hot is ok with me.

For making wives happy, San Francisco and surrounds - Big Sur to Napa Valley, are hard to beat. The city and coast are air conditioned in the summer. Lots to do and goggle at.

Don't rule out Europe--the flights aren't that bad since they're typically overnight. And, it's not that crowded in the summer, especially with the economy being down. Don't know where you may have already been in Europe, but for starters you couldn't go wrong with London, Paris, Rome/Florence, etc. You could easily spend a week in any of those cities and have a great trip. Get a copy of the appropriate Rick Steves book and you'll should be able to a keep the cost down, avoid some of the tourist pitfalls, and have a good time.

Banff would be nice. Cinque Terra would be special although Europe is expensive.

What is the weather like in Peru/Machu Pichu and the Galapagos that time of year? That would be unique.

Alaskan cruise would be okay as well.

Well, if you want to do something different, I can tell you some of the places we're looking at for a 10 year anniversary trip... why go were everyone you know already goes?

Favagnino (small island off the coast of Sicily)
Skopelos (island in the Dodecanese in Greece - near Skiathos)
Beaches in Puglia or Calabria

Debating between all these - it's hard to pick but it might fuel some good ideas. You might also want to look at some options in the Canaries... lots of flights from Madrid to Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, etc.

My wife and I spend a week each July in Santa Barbara. You can fly into LA and take a one hour drive up the coast. It has some nice hotels - we stay at the Baara Resort or the Four Seasons in Montecto. Good restaurants and shopping, nice wharf area, and close ot many wineries.

Weather is phenomonal. Usually in the low 70's for a high.

the ideaas are great, keep them coming. we have been to Switzerland and France already. Ireland is definitely an option.

The more I read up on Puglia, the more I like... you should really look into it. It's a great region of Italy - spectacular beaches and scenery, amazing towns, etc. You can fly into Bari then rent a car and go explore the Salento peninsula.

I think we're going to opt for Favignana... just go there and chill out on an island. I'm working on plans this weekend...

TXHookem,
How hard is it to get there though? I was considering Capri for our honeymoon, but my travel agent talked me out of it mainly because of the difficulty and time it takes to travel there. Depending on where you fly from, (I am assuming Houston or DFW), you are going to have to fly to Paris, Frankfurt, or London most likely, then into Rome, then train to the coast, then by boat to get to the island. 2 to 3 days travel is what I was told.. just not that worth it to me. I would rather go to an island in the Carribean, much closer and easier to get to.
