Texas women's basketball is one win short of joining 4 other programs in the 1,000 victory club - Tennessee, La Tech, James Madison and Old Dominion. The first opportunity comes Wednesday in a home game against Kansas.

:bevo::bevo::bevo:This is HISTORY in the making, folks, heard on Aston's Press Conference held today that former AD Donna Lopiano will be in the house...she hired Jody Conradt, and as they say..
"The Rest Is History".....

This is great for the program! I doubt we will have trouble. Never under estimate and be ready!
I remember being out in Palo Alto when Jody was going for her 500th victory.....sadly, we lost the game, but the Standford band did the funniest parody after the game for Jody. She couldn't help but laugh with the crowd....as it was all in good fun.

But this 1000th victory tomorrow will be a great milestone for the program. I look forward to it!
Hook'Em.....

It's hard to show up for this game when you know that Coach A is going to play all the subs. Real sloppy basketball. We should really be working on offensive execution with our team. Coach A should be requiring that we pass the ball at 8-10 before taking a shot. It's going to catch up with us.

That doesn't make sense. The fans didn't know who was playing. It was a history marker. Plus the Baylor game had less than there were last year.

Doesn't make sense. The fans did not know who was going to play. The starters played the majority and did just fine. Nothing fancy. Just a routine game against poor little Kansas. Plus, there hasn't been many in attendance this year at all for as good as the season has been. They deserve better, but I've been saying that for years. Baylor game had more than usual but still not as much as last year. Imani and Brooke played very well, but Celina, Bri and Empress......not to well. Empress did have 5 assists which is awesome! Realllllly like Ariel more and more each game. Definitely will miss Imani next year. Hoping Kelsey steps up and makes up for the loss in Imani's numbers.

Last years slide really effected the attendance this year in my opinion, even though they made a decent run in the tournament last year. The program has been mediocre for years so one great season is not going attract fans right away. All fans are bandwagon and want to be apart of a winning program. Winning the conference this year or making it to the final 4 will bring the fans to the arena.

Only 18 to's tonight...and 7 of those came in the first quarter.....a bit scary when we think 18 is a low....lol....but we won....and that's all that counts for now. But we've got to cut down on the silly turnovers......of the first 12 to's I counted, 10 were bad to's....2 were acceptable.

When I was watching the 1,000 wins "salute" after the game, I kept thinking about the days when we'd play La. Tech or Tennessee.....and later Texas Tech...and even the mezzanine would be 3/4's full.....of course, the Red Raiders would come by the thousands just to get out of Lubbock....
Don't know if we'll ever have those kinds of crowds again (10,000-14,000)....but it would be great to always have 8,000 at the games.

This team has averaged about 20 turnovers a game for 4 years now. So this is just who they are, it's not going to change. They just have to hope that they don't have one of those 25 turnover games on a given day. This team doesn't have a lot of players with good basketball IQ. Hopefully the young players and the players coming in the future will.

If the program continues to win I think the crowds will be like they were during the Jamie Carey and Stacy Stephens days.

Congrats on win # 1000!!:bounce1::bounce2:
It's hard to show up for this game when you know that Coach A is going to play all the subs.
Why wouldn't you play subs when you have a game well in hand? It gives them valuable experience, and decreases risk of injury to others. Not to mention that most of our subs have done a great job when called upon, and more often than not been key contributors. And in some instances, out-played our starters. We have significant depth, and should take advantage of that. This doesn't negatively impact offensive flow, but it does make us a better, more experienced squad. Personally, I expect (and want) to see Tasia, Jordan and others on the floor, and leave disappointed when they don't play.
Coach A should be requiring that we pass the ball at 8-10 before taking a shot.
Historically over-passing has been a bigger problem for this team. Look at those early three-pointers from Brooke last night, or the mid-range jumpers from Imani when she was out of position. Those are shots we would have hesitated on in the past. I agree, you have to strike a balance, and there are times we take bad shots. But we are one of the fastest teams in the country, and need to take advantage of that speed by taking the shot when it's there. IMO the issue is more about individual players gaining experience. For instance, Lashann's first attempt last night was forced; the opening just wasn't there, and she was pulled right away. OTOH I was surprised to see her pulled after her second attempt. She stole the ball and was down court in a flash, and had her one defender beat. The ball barely missed dropping, but it was absolutely the right shot to make. No way would you pull back, or wait for others in that scenario. So I didn't understand pulling her after what I considered an excellent sequence of plays.

It's a process but I think we're headed in the right direction. The 9000 for the BU contest shows the interest is there, and if we continue to win, the numbers will go up accordingly. After being stagnant for a long time, we're up 600 + per game this season, and that increase jumps to 1100 per contest during conference play.
This team has averaged about 20 turnovers a game for 4 years now.
We're averaging 17.1 this season, 16.3 last year, and 18.2 the season before that. We're currently 5th in conference in TO margin, a spot behind no. 4 BU. And that 17.1 average for this year has been impacted greatly by a few contests - overall, we've been much better in far more games than we were last season.

Celina, Bri and Empress played okay. Celina was 2-5 from the field, 2 assists with 4 rebounds. Empress was 1-4 with 5 assists. Bri was 2-4. How do you get not so well? They had a few turnovers but to say they didn't play well shows your understanding of the game.

UConn plays in a weaker conference but you never see Geno subbing this much during the season. That's because he is building offensive flow and chemistry. We should be doing the same thing with our core 7 players, if we expect to get to the final four. I am not suggesting that we NOT play the other players on the team. I am saying we have to focus on getting our core right first and that is the group that will play when the game is on the line. Our kids play rushed because they know they are coming out within 4 to 5 minutes. Hence the turnovers you see and quick shots.

Coach A just hasn't been where Geno is so she doesn't understand that...IMO she is worried about making too many players and parents happy. This is the time of the season that you fine tune your core so that you can make that push in late Feb & Mar.

Celina, Brooke, Empress, Ariel, Bri, Imani and Kelsey is the core of the team and we need to get their chemistry right before we deep into Feb. To beat the best you have to think like the best!

UConn beat SMU the other day 90 - 37
  • Breanna Stewart played 26 mins
  • Katie Lou Samuelson played 28 mins
  • Kia Nurse played 24 mins
  • Moriah Jefferson played 32 mins
Now that classes are back in, we have limited time to help our kids get better. We have to use games as practice when we can. Our core group has to get better offensively to win big games!

I was glad to see everyone get minutes in a historic game.

UCONN is in a conference where every game is a blowout and not the grind the Big 12 is night after night and glad some of our players were able to rest actually.

Not a big difference that I can see. Jefferson played the most minutes in the game referenced, 32, the only Husky on floor more than 30 mins - and just barely at that. Brooke saw 27 mins vs. KS. 4 UCONN starters saw 20 + minutes of action, whereas 3 Horns played 20 + vs. the Jayhawks. Overall 11 players saw action for the Huskies, or every healthy squad member (full roster of 12).

That's the beauty, and point of having a deep, talent-rich roster. It would make no sense to keep a bunch of players on the bench, and then expect them to come into a game and suddenly contribute in the event someone was injured, or got into foul trouble. The reality is we have non-starters who are more talented than some of our starters. They may lack experience, and the necessary leadership capabilities, hence the reason they're coming off the bench. But in terms of talent, and contributing to the team, it makes sense that all are seeing the amount of playing time they have thus far. This team reminds me of our NC team in many ways, though we obviously lack a floor general like Kamie Ethridge. But that's okay, all teams are unique, and our PG by committee effort has been pretty outstanding this season. But in other ways, the teams are very alike. The bench averaged more points than the five starters on that squad, and no player on the team average more than 14 points per game. And only 2 of 12 on the roster averaged fewer than 10 mins, and even they saw significant time (7.4 and 9.2 mins respectively). The remaining ten averaged from 12.7 to 29.2 mins per contest, so no player on the floor for more than 30 mpg.

Funny how we can find so many problems with a team that is 19-1 and ranked #6 and currently at the top of the conference. :smile1:

But I guess always looking to improve is a good thing. :smokin:

From where I sit, most of our turnovers happen for one of two reasons:

1. We tried to go too fast and lost control but going slower isn't necessarily a better option
2. More often, however, is when we try to force the ball inside even when the outside shot was probably the better option. That predictability is our biggest vulnerability IMO but hard to resist considering Imani is usually a good bet.

I don't suggest Karen is perfect but she has gotten better each year and is bringing some fantastic talent to UT. I have very little criticism for her or the team at this point and the little I do is probably unwarranted.:hookem:

overseasbbfan1 Celina has been the glue for this team over the last couple of years. I really do not see the PG by committee, Celina is the PG. Brooke is best shooter, hence the reason she is playing the SG. Brooke will be the future PG. Empress and Ariel are interchangeable but I would probably go with Ariel because she seems to have a higher basketball IQ. Bench players can also learn be watching other players, it makes them hungry for their opportunity.

This team is 19-1 but we do not look great offensively at times (hence the turnovers....by all the players), so that is why we need to use this time to get better before post season. All good team tighten up their bench at this point during the season. I am not suggesting that we do not play the bench, I am suggesting that Coach A focus more on getting the core group ready for crunch time.

Anything less than a final four for this team will be a disappointment. I think we have the players to get it done. As a fan, I want to see good basketball execution! I want to see us consistently score 80+ points before we get to post season. When we start doing that I will be in the stands for every home game.

No Big 12 teams meets your criteria for attending all home games

BU is close at 78.7

Texas is at 74.3

This team will continue to turn the ball over at a high rate that's just who they are. To me it's more about the individual players lack of basketball IQ and decision making that are the cause of the high turnovers, and not about needing to get cohesion with the 8 or 9 players in the rotation. And if I'm not mistaken Imani leads the team in turnovers, so i'm pretty sure she's not rushing because she knows she's going to come out after 4 to 5 minutes.

Considering ODU's record this year (7-12), UT could catch and pass them to move into the 4th spot this season.
