UCF National Champions

I wish they could have been in the playoffs this year. I read somewhere that UCF ended the season ranked #12 — behind some 3-loss teams. I didn’t look that up to verify it but I don’t know how you keep them out of the top 10 at least.

They are a helluva lot more deserving than the Mormons were when the media gifted them the single most undeserving NC in history.

So let the neverwas wannabes play cupcakes, get a bowl opponent ranked somewhere between 12 & 20, and proclaim "love the underdog", "we're #1".
That was not UCF this year, but Ronnie Thompson predicted this back in the mid 80s along with those schools building their programs on non-qualifiers.

I don't care where they come from, play a real schedule of real teams, qualify with your record, make the playoffs. Otherwise quit your ***** whining and be glad some ******** bowl will take you as a reward.

If they were ranked 12th, not even a 8 team playoff, which is about all we can ever hope for, would have helped them. They need to get themselves into a Power 5 conference. Big XII expansion anybody?

The CFP does not pick the top 12 ranked teams for the New Year's Six bowls. One rule for the New Year's Six bowls is: The highest-ranked champion from the "Group of Five" conferences (The American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt) is guaranteed a berth if the group's top team is not in the playoff. This got UCF into the Peach Bowl.

The CFP would possibly alter that rule with a 8 team playoff to:

The highest-ranked champion from the "Group of Five" conferences (The American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt) is guaranteed a berth in the playoff if they are either ranked:
a) in the top 12, or
b) in the top 16 and higher than at least one P5 conference champion.

UCF paid out "National Championship" bonuses to their coaches, most of whom are headed to Nebraska.

According to associate athletics director for communications Andy Seeley, UCF is distributing an additional $300,000 to the nine on-field assistants and $25,000 to the support staff, which will be divvied up at the discretion of head coach Scott Frost, who is departing for Nebraska, with the approval of athletics director Danny White.

Scott Frost had already hit a "bonus cap" so he won't get anything but it's a grand gesture to take care of assistants when they were under no obligation to do so. I'm sure the unexpected windfall from the Peach Bowl helped cover these costs.

AD Danny White is doing a masterful job in leveraging the UCF success. From amicably navigating Frost's departure to hiring the new staff and gaining maximum exposure from the undefeated season he might be an AD that bigger schools want to have on speed dial.

It would have been cool to see Bama schedule them thinking it would be an easy win. A UCF win there may have gotten them into the playoffs.

Nice billboard, but really, put it on I-20. Traffic is so heavy on McFarland nobody will be able to read it.

First pledge class to paint over it, gets hell week shortened.

Never happen as they would have to give up the likes of Arkansas State, ULaLa and the Citadel (their 2018 OCC games)

Or Florida St, Colo St or Fresno St.....not quite the cupcake schedule you portend it to be. They couldn't guess Fla St would be so bad they would lose their head coach to aggy.

I know everyone likes the underdog and compares CFB to NCAA basketball, which has a "pure" tournament. But not a lot of people talk about how VCU gets in a final four because they play lesser competition, rest up, and then go all out to see if they can beat (one at a time) teams from power 5 conferences who have been through the wringer all season. CFB would be no different. Boise State, UCF, etc, cry foul and want recognition, but it's just not the same schedule/punishment/physicality. Auburn was awesome at home this year, beating Alabama and Georgia. Get 'em away from home, well, Clemson was a playoff team as were Bama and Georgia, but what about LSU? I know it's a difficult hill for non p5s to climb, but until you get some more meat on your nonconference schedule to prove you can hang for more than a bowl game year in and year out, I find their argument lacking a little meat on the bones...

Saw a guy wearing a UCF t-shirt in the gym in San Antonio yesterday.

Jump on the bandwagon now. They could be the next dynasty.

It was the same here with Seattle shirts, after they started winning.

In the 70s we had a lot of Pittsburgh Steeler fans around here. I don't see that much anymore. The Laker jerseys have also faded somewhat with the team's fortunes. Of course, Bama Bandwagoneers are everywhere now. Everybody wants to back a winner.

Damn it, Joe, now the Aggies are overloading the "My Plates" website ordering the new A&M version for their imaginary championships.
