Georgia vs. Alabama

Well, the good news is that the SEC champion was beat mercilessly and sent home crying.

However, the bad news is that the team that finished second in the SEC West won the 'ship. Didn't see that coming.

Many here believe in the notion that nothing good comes from an OU win but heck, even with the OU loss, there was a negative result. Why? Because all we're going to hear now is nothing but 'SEC SEC SEC'.

Final kicker is that an unbelievable number of freshman will be returning for both of these teams. Great game and unbelievable finish though considering that the previous play was a massive sack.

My cable went out and I missed the entire game. I had to watch highlights this morning.

You gotta give Saban credit for benching his starting QB and putting in a true freshman. It didn't work out for us back in 2010, but I guess we don't have the deal with the devil that Saban does. 5 Nattys in 9 seasons, amazing!

I took a glance at Alabama's 2017 recruiting class
QB Tua Tagovailoa was the 6th ranked player in that class
Yet he was still a 5-star. They had six 5-stars in 2017

Several more of that group of players besides Tua made meaningful contributions to the win last night -- RB Najee Harris, LT Alex Leatherwood and WR Jerry Jeudy. Plus high 4-stars WR DeVonta Smith and WR Henry Ruggs III. In total, true freshmen from their 2017 class (ranked #2 all-time by 247) accounted for 257 of Alabama’s 371 offensive yards.

Alabama had a seven-year streak (2011-17) of signing the No. 1 overall class in the country. That streak finally ended this winter.
Broke by whom?
Georgia

AND Georgia has six 5-star and thirteen 4-star recruits coming in next Fall.

Some great data there Joe.

Six - 5 star players in 2017 ! Let that sink in a minute. Most good teams that recruit well generally get 1 or 2, (maybe 3 here-or-there) 5 star players in a class but to get 6 is astounding to me.

The quality recruiting consistency, the level of talent signed and the production Saban gets out of what he recruits is just obscene.

Tuff, tuff loss for the Dawgs. Didn't watch, I only checked scores now and again on my phone app. I thought they had them but it seemed reading the play by play, the Dawgs went south in the second half. And I was at the '83 Cotton when Curry muffed away a punt and a NC right near the end of the game.

Looking ahead, which sec team will bama play for next year's NC? Seems that no matter how they finish the committee will put in the sec champ and bama regardless of how they finish. But they established that criteria last year when tOSU was put in.

Bama dynasty cannot last forever... something will change one day. Saban will leave / retire, a better team in the SEC will appear, some kind of scandal, etc.

I look at the game and frankly, I am a bit depressed. Texas, a marquee program, has been AWOL since 2009. All we can do is watch. I have to wonder when we will be back in the conversation. The fact that it has been 8 years is deflating.

Like Alabama, we should be competing for a NC every year. We have the pedigree. We have the financial resources. And, we’re sitting in the most fertile recruiting hotbed in the country.

We need to be back in this game soon, and often.

I truly would love for one of you insiders to detail exactly why Nick Saban is not the coach at The University of Texas.

As I recall, Mack refused to hand the keys over and Saban didnt want to unseat a legend unwilling to go. Next thing you know we have Charlie.

THE GOOD NEWS: The game was the second highest rated college football game ever. That is despite the highly unpopular SEC vs SEC element.
Please have your sarcasm meter switched to on. I was hoping for another LSU vs Alabama fiasco.

My complaint is that I believe that SEC is more set up for this to happen than any other conference. Fewer conference games and everybody plays patsies later in the season to pad their records.

I find it interesting that after the Super Bowl there were tons of complaints about overtime, and I've heard none so far after the college title game, even though the coin flip was an even bigger deal in that one.

I find it interesting anyone complains about OT at all. The reason we have OT is because so many complained about ties. There will never be a way to solve the problem that satisfies everyone. We could be like soccer and just kick 5 field goals from the 40 yd line and if both teams end up with the same total after 5 its a tie.

I believe soccer uses a different player for each kick? The current college overtime system is the best solution to ties in my opinion. The coin flip gives a advantage to one team but nothing like the NFL's overtime before changing the field goal rule. I found that the college flip winner has a 52% chance of winning.

That seems unlikely.

From 1995 to 2006 it was a 55% advantage.
From 2008 to 2013 it was a 62% advantage.

There will never be a way to solve the problem that satisfies everyone.

But there is a way to make it 50/50 on the coin flip, a fairly simple one in fact, that keeps clock management and field position as meaningful parts of the game. No opening kickoff only: whoever gets the ball first starts on their own 15 (or even 10 if that's not quite enough). A lot of coaches would even choose to play defense first.
