I'm feeling better and better about this movie the more I hear about it. Superman has had horrible luck in terms of its treatment in movies. Since the original Superman was made, I don't really feel like the story has been taken seriously - I think there's a cynicism in Hollywood that has a really hard time dealing with a purely good character without a tongue-in-cheek approach. Parts of Superman II had promise, but limited technology combined with some really weird ideas kept it mediocre - and then it just went downhill. if half of the Kevin Smith rant on his involvement with a Superman rewrite was accurate, you understand why this character has not been well done in the past.
Superman Returns should have been good - but the need to "reinvent" Superman into an absentee dad and the lack of understanding that a superhero movie needs some actual ACTION at some point ruined that one.
But I think that they have the right idea here:
